Why would you want to remove carbon canister? Its your fuel tank breather...

The carbon canister is filled with active charcoal to absorb evaporative gases produced in the fuel tank. These absorbed gases are then delivered to the intake manifold by manifold vacuum for combustion purposes.

When i had my turbo done in my car and new cooler piping and all that crap my workshop removed the carbon canister... i dun know why they did it but they seem to think it doesn't do anything in particular.. it wont hurt leaving it in, they just took that out and put my oil catch tank there... still not sure exactly what its for tho...

My understanding is that the carbon canistor is your fuel tank breather/removes fumes from the tank when its being filled up or when the fuel is being used (driving). it recirculates into the plenum under vaccum and burns off.

I just pulled the hoses off, removed the canister and blocked the metal lines off with rubber plugs, then fitted a longer piece of hose to the fuel tank breather and ran that to the front of the car.

Runs fine :)

Don`t get caught without it by police or R.T.A. They would take a dim view of it I`m sure. The fumes from your tank will store in the charcoal powder within the cannister where it will be consumed by the engine under vacume. It has no side effects on the performance of the engine at all unlike hot oil fumes from the valve covers. If you let the fumes run to atmosphere then congratu

lations, your wasting fuel vapours and poisoning us all for no apparent reason.By the way,try taking it off and tap it on the ground a couple of times then give it a shake. If you can hear the granules inside then good,if not then it needs replacing as they are supposed to only last 40,000km.

Yeah, where do tubes and stuff go. I'm removing this soon as it will be more effort to keep than remove with the new plenum. Anyone know where that one metal tube goes? as far as I can see it leads down the passanger side rail up and over the motor and then down under the drivers side well.

has anyone got any pics of how they blocked the tubes etc

its not as hard as you must think. you pull the ends off at the canister, shove whatever you like down the vaccum line and put it back on. Be careful as there maybe some residue that comes out of the lines.

why not just Relocate it and stay legal, rather than remove and be epa defectable.

thats what i would do.. well actually i belive mine has been relocated to the back of the engine bay cause it looks like someone has crated a bracket for it so they could install a pod filter..

just move it to a better location... :pirate:

Actually congratulate Brad @ Chasers for that one :pirate: cos when i went back to ask for it.... they couldn't find it nemore... took it all of 6hrs to dissapear lol

But if you want to stay safe with the epa why would anyone own the cars like we do? No one keeps theirs stock and they'll always find something to drill you with... so if your in it to mod you might aswell not do it half heartedly but if it makes no diff in removing it then its no use, might aswell just leave it in.. not that i can talk lol

    • Nah no bearings, just slip fit.  Would be a reasonably challenging but not impossible job to modify it to run bearings but I'm hoping that's not necessary as I may have well built one myself if I end up spending hours modifying it!
    • Brumbys with good shells are bloody expensive, I've looked at 2 "cheaper" cars, and walked away from both,  plus after some research spare parts are fairly sparce I'm starting to think that I missed the boat on finding a clean one that is straight (ish) and without alot rust I'm starting to think about a old Hilux as panels and other parts are much more available as they sold tens of thousands of them I use to be indecisive but now I'm not sure
    • A Brumby would probably fit a big metal toolbox in the back... this is how it begins
    • Picked up a new OEM boot seal for the MX5 today as the old one got ripped a bit by me being a idiot by seeing if I could fit a large metal tool box in it, it didn't fit, and ripped the seal with the corner of the tool box I am still waiting on time to get the cams and new balancer installed, as well as the repairs to the boot Time will not be an issue soon though
