As some of you may be aware, in the 4-5 months I have begun prototyping various fibreglass gauge pod designs for all the Skylines models, 300ZX, S13/14/15 and WRX. See my page at http://ww.mearcat.com.au/Pods for some examples of what I have done so far. The R33 & S13 pods are currently being sold but more designs will be ready soon.

I want to expand a little and develop a few gauge pod designs for the Ceffy. I am looking for someone in perth (NOR) who is prepared to allow me to loan their Ceffy for a weekend to create some designs. I have loaned over 12 individuals cars from various people so far and all have been very happy with the treatment and storage of their cars. I am happy to provide contacts of those people for references. The car will not be driven or taken apart, and will be vacuumed/cleaned when I have finished.

If you are interested in loaning your car (in exchange for a free pod) please PM or email me.

FYI Final prices will be $79 for a single and maybe ~$110 for the double/triple (if I actually make one). Each pod will also be undercoated & prepainted.

Are referring to the Yahoo jap auctions? If so, I just had search through 60 odd pages and several searches thgrough the meters section A31/Cefiro parts and the only ones I could find were starting price of 7800Yen or AUD$88 with reserve - and buy prices of over 15,000Yen AUD$174 (before postage from Japan to Oz that is).

My intention is to make them mainly for street cars not soley for drifters, but my gauge pods that sit in the right corner hardly interferes with vision at all.

oh look another one...

oh and anything there does block your view when you a bout 50mm from the side of a mountain and sideways.

stop ripping people off,

Thanks for those links - I saw the carbon one but not the others. Translating and browsing Yahoo JP is not that effective sometimes. Shipping within Japan for a couple of those pods works out to be about $93-99, so those pods you've quoted will be well over $100 by the time they get to Australia. I would consider that to be a comparative price to the pods I am considering fabricating.

And thanks for the mountains of sarcasm (and support???) :P

I would still like to move ahead and prototype some gauge pods for the Cefiro - and price them accordingly :P

  • 4 weeks later...

Thanks to meanman, I had his Ceffy over the weekend and made and single and double gauge pod for (up to & including) 60mm gauges.

Pics of the two designs can be found http://people.aapt.net.au/~mearcat/Pod/ Due to the shape of the dash that drops away towards the door, the RHS of the pods look a little weird when it's in painted in the contrasting blue undercoat, but from previous experience it's not as obvious once its painted grey/black.

I have loaded up my fabricator with heaps (21) other gauge pod designs for other cars so lead times have blown right out. I expect these designs will not be available for at least couple of months.

    • To be fair passengers who aren't silly and have been in proper fast cars have often been pretty impressed once you hit 4th gear
    • I suppose that's true. Barring almost any situation, I'll never sell so what the market does is kind of irrelevant to me. It's possible I'd make most of my money back. That spreadsheet I mentioned? Maybe I could make back more than what the car's total costs thus far are, but the parts and all that is possibly a different story... Thanks for reading. It was certainly a good moment and just makes the ties to the car that much stronger. It's exciting that the option will be there to bring it over, however I have some plans with a shop that may end up keeping the car there longer, not sure. Coupled with the fact I want to move there and haven't solidified any path yet. So in a way, it feels like I'm in a limbo state that is uncertain; time will tell.
    • No worries, everything worked out in the end. I just wanted to make the point that it doesn't matter where it comes from (I.E Australia), it can be broken or improperly built. I would still purchase from these companies in the future. B2R - Not certain how that finished, this was on a car I wired a few things and street tuned. I know the owner ended up shipping the motor back to Australia for investigation. Hopefully some of it is covered under warranty.  Turbosmart - I always pressure test everything that goes on my car. It's a habit from my career in oil and gas. I run two 40mm's and both had major leaks from the actuator to exhaust portion through the shaft. I returned both, they shipped me back two and one was leaking and the other had a 38mm top (40mm gate with 38mm actuator cap, no idea how that happens). Eventually after a lot of back and forth I found myself with two non-leaking gates. I believe this happens a lot more then people would like to believe but you would never know if you don't pressure test them prior to installation. Crank Motorsport - Issued a full refund and let me keep the seat rails. I turned them into scrap metal for other projects. GKTech - Shipped me out a replacement and asked that I modify it as per my idea and that they would do the same for a future revision. ATP - Can just needed a large shim to bolt up properly.  Haltech - They started an actual proper Beta channel for firmware's a few months back and stopped using the general public for testing. I'm now much happier.  Speedtek - f**k Speedtek. I would love to watch them burn.
    • I've got a Turbosmart wastegate, ATP catch can, many GK Tech parts and Haltech everything. Everything's been perfect, sorry to hear your experience wasn't the same
