Hi guys,

Almost at my wits end trying to rectify my boost problems now. What i need is someone who has installed a AVCR boost controller (or similar - i have instructions now - woohoo!) and a few hours of thier time over the weekend. I'll shout a carton of their choice for the favour.

Basically for those who don't know, my car had an exhaust leak in december, i had that rectified by the awesome guys down at Belconnen Discount Tyre Service (Marc2 and co), however since i've had it back, its suffering a severe lack of boost problem.

Mechanically its fine - purr's like a kitten, no misfires, clean airfilter etc etc etc.

I have a feeling that something to do with the AVCR isn't hooked up properly. Jayce put me onto Glen at ESP however he can't get to look at the thing till after monday. Glen mentioned that the most common thing that goes on is that people don't hook up the Comm point on the Apexi solenoid to the Turbo's Actuator. I'm going to be honest here and say, i have nfi where the actuator is :P

Failing that if someone could go through the install with me to check its all where it should be, and hopefully all the problems go away.

So yeah, if anyone can help me, throw a reply here and i'll pm you my mobile number :P

Thanks in advance guys.

This might sound silly, but have you checked your cat at all? I found that mine had the insides collapse into this awesome mess of cloggingness which stuffed my boost right up. New cat and off I went though - might be worth a look.

no rattles or anything that would suggest it. Not to mention the fact it would have to be hideously coincidental.

The actuator is the round half beer can shaped goldie coloured metal canister just above your turbo {I'll try to find a pic and show you}. It has an arm coming out the back of it that controls your wastegate.

What Glen means is that your AVCR is your boost controller and its not get the boost readings. In the engine bay there should be a part of the AVCR that has little 6mm rubber hoses coming out of it. One of these hoses will be hanging loose, you need to plug it back into your actuator. It will have a nipple coming off it for a hose to push over.

Atm your AVCR is not reading boost, it is reading atmosphere.

Of cause this is only any good to you if that is the problem, and I don't know why Glen did not fix it for you on the spot, it is a 30 second job.

Glen was on the phone, he's out of town till monday.

What i've got is

2 hoses out of the Apexi Solenoid going to their proper places (so i'm told - which is why i'd like to check), can't remember anything else coming out of them.

However i do have the standard solenoid there, but the hose out of it is blocked off with a screw.

i'll try and take pictures tonight and show.

The AVCR is reading boost (as well as the standard boost gauge) it just slams at 0.55 kg/mm rather than heading all the way up to 0.8 like the controller is set to allow it to.

I have SOME boost, just nowhere near what i should and what its set to. What will the wastegate do on its own?

Nothing,

1. It is prob. not getting enough boost to open.

2. It is driven by the actuator which is getting no signal [maybe if hose is missing?].

Where was your exhaust leak? Did they play around with the turbo/manifold/dump pipe area - which one?

3 headstubs and manifold gasket all gone, required a head doctor.

Will look at that spot in a few.

Thanks heaps mate.

yeah if your running a ceramic honey comb filter

but if you have a descent stainless steel after market cat with a stainless steel filter you shouldnt have this problem.

A picture speaks a thousand words...

SO

here be a picture of the apexi solenoid.

boostprobs1.jpg

These aren't around the wrong way are they?

here's the other angle

boostprobs2.jpg

Now the other (original?) solenoid that has the blocked off pipe, wtf? the other one goes to this other pipe which i suppose is internally venting something somewhere.

boostprobs3.jpg

Finally an overhead shot hopefully showing everything.

boostprobs4.jpg

I'll take my camera to work, so if you need any more pictures let me know.

Thanks once again guys, and remember if we can't fix it via a forum, i'll put a carton of your choice in your pocket if i can come around and have someone show me whats wrong.

Cheers,

So on the way to work this morning, i went via the monaro. Some REALLY wierd shit is happening now. I have a distinct suspicion the AVCR has forgotten its settings.

Sitting in 4th at 100km/h off boost, plant your foot it rockets to 7k rpm, then falters back to 5.5k rpm and goes forward as you'd expect it to.

Its almost as if the clutch was held in (maybe i need a new clutch, but that would be a coincidence as well.)

Boost still wouldn't budge above 0.65.

Any chance it could be this stupid hot weather we've been having? not to mention its a nice chilly temp this morning?

That old solenoid and tubing could all be binned [i think] its not doing anything. Just block off/seal the holes in the pipes.

I'm not sure about the apexi solenoid and the hose positions, you need the instruction manual to see if they are hooked up right way round [i've got a Hks unit and its different obviously].

Otherwise all you hoses ect look right to me.

Unfortunatly i know little about EBC's but my Manual bleed valve is setup as such

Inlet pipe hose into bleed valve then it comes out the other end and goes straight into actuator which is what it looks like yours does. The only other thing i noticed is your lines are not really that direct i was always told with boost stuff to make them as short and straight as possible.

As tridentt also said you dont need the stock two stage boost controller any more just make sure any possible leak is blocked off but if it wasent you would probably hear a hissing sound/ idle problems.

Ckeck if your actuator arm to the wastegate is OK and not loose.

Try cleaning your AFM, don't touch it, just use brake cleaner or carb cleaner and squirt it heaps. I wouldn't have the afm plug sitting up like that, rotate it so that the plug is level or facing down a bit it stops moisture etc sitting there and getting into the afm box.

Otherwise my remote help abilities are all worn out.

    • I should note too as I have all 4 wheel speed inputs to the emtron I now have the emtron controlling the attessa solenoid for 4wd/traction and launch control strategies.
    • It works quite well with the adjustibility within each of the programs of the turbolamik. Essentially p1 is drive and lockup comes on like a normal driver.  But in program 7 I have customised it to not request the lockup clutch to engage until something like 6500/7 when slip was the lowest.
    • Yep, I like that. The tags are only on the first post of a thread and we don't get huge numbers of new threads. Also, I plan to add some more report types and we could have a member report type like 'review tags' then members could flag if they thought a topic wasn't tagged correctly.  No way man, I dig the input. Thanks!
    • It's a valid thought. There's not exactly that functionality already (when creating a thread) - that's where the OP can use/create any tag they want. We'd have to come up with a way for the user to request their tags get reviewed or something. Otherwise the mods would have to review every new post's tags (for those that have them, anyway). There's kind of that functionality already exists to some extent, post facto of starting the thread, where the OP or any other user could report the post to admins, and request that tags get reviewed. We could do this already, and any user could already have made such a request. To make it a part of the forum proper, it would require an initial and an ongoing education programme, so that people know that it's a thing. OP based tagging/request for review would also require at least some (probably most) of the user base to be told that it's a thing they can do. Both of these things probably wouldn't spread too far and/or get used very much. If it was the standard approach on a lot of different sites, then it might do, because people would be used to it. Prank's approach to this differs from my original thought, by leaning into tagging. Which is fine - it's possibly better than what I originally suggested. In fact, I just went to the R32 GTR wiring diagram thread and added tags, including "Library". That's probably a good way to use tags and the idea of a library. We just have to drag together an (organised!) index of threads or posts that have that tag. I have yet to do any of my own follow up by pursuing worthy threads and posts and reporting/marking/tagging them for the library, such as the @Sydneykid stuff I was talking about, and possibly any amount of @Lithium 's and others' posts. At least if I tag them Library, we'll have a start.   Back to @Wazmond's idea as it relates to @PranK's, we might have some sort of a list of tags that are already used to scrape for this library. I'm not entirely sure how that would be presented or used, particularly if it got long. But it's yet another idea!   cheers
    • Just a thought, but instead of restricting, is it possible to do like an "up for review" kind of thing? Where say someone who's not an admin/mod tags, it would require approval for it to actually tag? User posts with a 'tag' > Admin/Mod Reviews > Approves tag > Tag now exists kinda thing? Just came across this thread so Im not too sure if Im straying off topic or not but forgive me if i am...
