Hi guys,

just wondering who is using cusco tension rods on an R32 GTR? I have a set here but noticed they are straight, not curved like other 32 GTR rods I've seen. I've double checked the part numbers etc and they are the right ones. just wondering is there a problem with using these straight rods in my 32 GTR?

Had cusco's in mine and they had slight bend in em.

Only thing was that the bend was on the thread like it was done after rods were bought.

They were slightly worn so I just got two new non cusco adjustables from Just Jap a while back and they have the bend in em from factory.

Might have something to do with AWD front hubs or something?

Cusco used to have different part numbers for 2wd and 4wd. Then they went to one part number.

:P cheers :D

they definitely list 2 different part numbers for R32 4WD and 2WD.

R32 GTR and GTS4 are 231 472 ASN

R32 GTST is 220 473 AS

They both list the same adjustment of +5mm to -9mm over standard length rods. This info is from the 2007 cusco goods master (in front of me now).

The question I have is this. I have the right rods here, the 231 472 ASN, but they are straight rods. So is there any problem in using the straight rods on a 32 GTR? I can't imagine there will be but on the other hand why do they still have different part numbers? all good questions! lol.

So they have gone back to 2 different part numbers again. Wonder why?

yeah it beats the shit out of me. but I'm still not sure if using the straight rods in the GTR will cause a problem. i'm guessing not?

maybe the GTST ones have those little cooling brakeckts on them, but the GTR ones dont, hence the different numbers?

thanks mate. they are straight yes? they look straight to me, but a bit hard to tell for my crappy eyes. :( mine look pretty much exactly the same. and they work without problem?

Yeah, they look pretty straight to me. I haven't had any problems with them. If you would like I can try & get a part number off them.

nah, I'm pretty sure they are the same. no need to get your back dirty! but thanks for the offer.

what's the adjustment like? got enough caster out of them? It will be interesting to see how they compare to my current china rods adjustment wise. and also the china rods I have do have the bend in them.

Adjustment. The honest answer is I don't know. Previously I ran quite a bit of caster in the front end. To be honest I found it made very little difference. If you are bored you can work out how much an extra couple of degrees caster makes to the tyre camber at a quarter of a turn lock. The (short) answer is bugger all. Once I worked this out & looked at the increased load the caster puts on the short lived top outer bushes I wrote it off as a bad idea & just ran four degrees or thereabouts. Best advice I can offer is that if you need more -ve camber do that & don't worry about the caster so much.

As an aside, have you seen these - from Ikeya. Just wondering if anyone has tried the spacer for the outer joint & if it makes much of difference to the height of the front roll centre.

Did you happen to see any alloy caster rods on you travels?

didn't see any alloy ones sadly. I guess because they need a bit of strength. it would be nice though. I did see that cusco make a roll centre adjustment kit too. cost is around $1500 I think for the full kit. I'll dig out the pics from the goods master if you're interested.

Intersted yes, but probably not at $1500 for a spacer plate. Yikes.

lol, yeah they know how to charge. I have a feeling that include replacement lower arms or something nice too. surely.... it must! it's not just a spacer, they claim it's adjustablle so you can change roll centres as you wish.

djr81 + beer baron... i dont know if this helps but in my mates sprinter he used those alloy spacer ^top right^ of that supplied picture as a way or reducing bump steer.. it changes the angle of the lower control arm and reduces bump steer from a lowerd or coil overed car.. i know in my gts-t32 bump steer is an issue atm for me.

BB, I have Cusco adjustable tension rods in my 33GTR, Part number 232 479 A, they are straight and have brake cooling duct mount bars on them with pre-drilled holes. I run +6 degrees of castor with -5mm of camber with Cusco preset adjustable top arms.

yeah it's funny how the 32 ones dont have the little brake duct thingy on them. bummer. thanks for the reply though. mine are exactly the same as djr81s so I'm sure they'll be fine. :D
