Changed front brake pads, because that is where the noise is coming from. its the right hand front wheel. i look at the pads and they still have a lot of meat on them, but changed them anyway with some fero's or whatever they are, but still no luck, was ok for like 2 days, but now squiling like crazy again. went to supercheap picked up some spray to clean and take away noises brakes, still no luck.

what do i do now? i pull up at the lights and once im almost stopped ( 10k's a hour ) this horrible squiling starts until i slam the brakes hard!

any idea's?

Itll be the discs, feel up and down them for uneven-ness and cracks. new pads will last for a bit until the cracks in the rotors cut into them and you get un-even disc/pad contact again.

You need to take the pads and the discs off and take them to a break specalist and have them machine the rotors and chamfer the pads. If the rotors are gone beyond the machining point then you will need new discs, I recomended DBA Slotted, or if you want to spend more money, DBA Slotted + Dimpeled, which are also gold passivated and zinc treated.

My front brakes were fine but would squeel like a pig just as the car was coming to a stop. My front rotors were glazed due to overheating and needed to be replaced (too thin to machine).

I had the same problem, i got my rotors machined as i had plenty of meat left on em... solved my problem too

I have this problem, I had my discs machined and pads replaced and they were noisy as hell, I took the car back and they looked at it and when I got it back they were better but still noisy..

stock rotors and Lucas pads, I havnt been back since because I have a problem with assholes pretending they know my car.

I'll be trying the spray then if that doesnt work I'll pull them down myself and do them myself..

they were bled , and are standard brakes. ive tried anti squil spray but no good. might go for slotted discs i think, thanks for the replies

I've got project mu slotted rotors and endless pads and they squeal. Having slots doesn't stop it squealling.

Many pads these days squeal especially performance pads under light braking.Generally if the rotors are machined and the pads bedded in properly it will lower the chances of squealing.If you have the metal shims still on the pads take them off and try the stick on anti-squeal which goes on the back of the pad.These are available from Race Brakes Sydney for about $10.

If you have performance pads or the brakes were not bedded in properly it may be to late though.

I'm actually not sure what my pads are (haven't had to change them yet) but I've personally found that my biggest problem is when my stock rotors get wet. They get a layer of surface rust almost instantly!

First few stops they squeil at low speed, but after that they're ok again.

    • 2 does "sort of" applies, maybe......but looking at what parts would be needed for the swap to get engineered, registered, and insured, and basically that's everything under the car, the modifications the make it legal would be problematic and horrendously expensive, all for a street car that just cruises around and hits a few twisty roads on the weekends Also, from looking at the NSW rules and Regs, with all modifications that is required just to make the car safe and not twist itself to pieces, and then actually get registered for street use, may still be impossible nowadays As for 1, when you add in a fresh engine, fresh transmission, rear cradle and diff, tailshaft, suspension, brakes, cooling, and all the other fabrication required, your probably looking at up to $100k to do it right, all for a 20 year old MX5 that is over engineered and you would never be able to actually use the power it has on the street, much like your beastie, which I love, but you actually track that thing and can use all of its powers in anger, in a safe environment  Hell, the old Bogan Cruise Ship had more power than I could use on the street, and in hindsight, I went a bit silly on that thing, it didn't really need the 500hp it had for what I actually used the car for, it was fun, but basically unusable on the street if you value your licence  As for cams, yeah, I'll probably book it in for them to get installed and tuned soonish, like next month after MX5 Mania are back at work....... and yes, I've already sent a email to bin the turbo quote and quote instead to install cams and a new Fluidampr balancer that will suit the 2.5 better than the OEM 2.0 balancer that is swapped over for the 2.5 install, as the balancer needs to get pulled to time the cams it's a while your in there sort of thing I did think a bit about flex fuel for a laugh, but being na, and no where really around locally anymore to get E85, I've binned that idea, so no sweet sweet corn smells are set for the car I wish E85 was more of a standard fuel, it's better for the environment, better for tuning, plus that sweet sweet smell we all love As for fitting in the family, that's not needed, as everyone in the family already owns a car that can seat 5 humans comfortably enough, the MX5 is "my toy" As for buying a car that is already built, nah, I would rather pick and choose my parts, I enjoy the process, and in the big picture, the additional cost is well worth the enjoyment, and the occasional frustration, I get out of doing it, albeit with other people spinning the spanners, and me, just paying the invoice 🤣
