I picked up a Turbo, dump pipe, intake system, wastegate... everything basically

from a 300zx turbo, for a very good price.

The plan is to make a L24e with some fancy stuff done to it...

the question is, What is this turbo?, it has a water cooled center, oil inlet and out, ball bearing..

its almost the same size as a R33 turbo,

Can anyone help me? it is really hard to find info on it...

like what does it flow, the AR etc...max psi (17 i think...)

its in mint condition thats why i bought it straigh up, without researching it... at the price it was too good to pass

Cheers,

MAG86 :action-smiley-069:

There are many varieties of this turbo. It'd be better if you could give us specifics of exactly what car it was from. Or better still, even pictures.

there is the turbo from the twin turbo z32. These are very very small turbos.

Then you have the vg30 from the leopard/gazelle (i think that's the model). It has op6 on the rear housing. It is ball bearing. The compressor side is similar to the rb20 turbo. It's laggy, and doens't have much midrange, not much topend either. The rb25 turbo is better.

there is also a bush bearing vg30 turbo. It has 45 v on the exhaust housing. Similar to the ball bearing one. Laggy, not much midrange, not much topend.

There is also one of the bush bearing ones with a inconel rear wheel.

pics pics pics

i will get some pics asap...

it was from a 120,000km 1984 300zx turbo (Z31) wreck...

it is eventually going on my hybrid L24e (2.4lt 7.6:1 comp ratio)

the turbo outlet doesnt have a flange on it, just a lip on the end of the 'pipe'

im not after massive pwer, just some more grunt...

here is the only pic i can get... its exactly the same as mine, even from the same year 300zx turbo(my mate is stripping one..wont sell me anything though)

we tried to un-bolt the exhaust section off the back... and it is the most hardest thing to undo, we soaked it in WD40, hit it, blow torched it, and those bolts will not come out....

how do professionals do it???

is there a recommended way of taking one apart? (im stuck as you can probably see...)

The way to remove the hard bolts is Snap On spanners, Rost Off Ice and oxyacetylene :)

It appears to be the bastardized VG30.

A completely useless compressor cover and wheel from the RB20 turbo with the VG30 rear housing.

Made by Hitachi for Nissan Motor Co.

Ball bearing.

Ceramic turbine wheel.

As stated above.

It isnt all that special and pushing it past 12 psi would end in failure pretty quickly.

An RB25 turbo would be considered an upgrade from that.

So it aint all that good then??

I only paid $150 incl. pipes and some boost sensor looking thing

is there anything i can get done to it to make it perform better or is it not worth it??

  • 2 weeks later...

AARRGGH!!!

i had it allout on my workbench last night, and the cat knocked a oil filter off the shelf and it landed on the compressor wheel..... bent a corner of a blade like it was playdoh..... i tried to bend it back with pliers... SNAP!!!! ( plus it was 3am as the wife hates it when i work on stuff)

so now there is a 3mm x 4mm piece snapped off.... the rest of the blade looks the same as all the others....

Now is this areally bad thing? or will it be fine?

Im only looking for a nice upgrade from the 80 or so kW i have now, so guys im not after massive power (yet). i seriously wont be running stacks of boost either.... probably wont get any bigger than 2.5 exhaust too

You had to play & now you have to pay! Simple as that.

Out of balance at 100,000rpm and it will self destruct.

Maybe you should have been working on PUSSY and not cat and maybe the wife might be a whole lot happier too.

Send it off to Mr Slide for a rebuild and a parting of about $800.00

You lost this round mister.

Cheers, D

    • Well, this is probably where a wiring diagram and a multimeter come into play.
    • I can say to anyone thats doing this; having done a number of R clusters; just be careful if its an unknown cluster.  It takes a bit of force to pull up; but if it feels excessive then its probably stuck. I've had this and pulled the entire hair spring out; and I can tell you; its not easy getting the correct spring replacement with the correct inner diameter and winding. In my case someone had used some sort of adhesive to stick it to the spindle and it pulled the whole spindle out; which the force seperated the hairspring from the spindal and caused it to deform.  You may have to clean it (IPA); or in my case if i'd known i should have used some sort of solvent on it.  Also check out Cruizin Central on eBay. He does all sorts of dials; and you can email him with any custom designs you want. So if you want like certain logos etc...he'll send you a mock of what it will look like then you accept the order and he'll take care of the rest. Fantastic dials and he can do basically any design you want.
    • Have you confirmed its the actual axles? Also the wheel bearings that mount on the hubs to hold the axles wear out. I replaced mine as they got play in them. It sorted my play issue.
    • Ive converted a few clusters for the R33 with 320km/h dials. On the back there are some pads which can be bridged or unbridged (using solder or wick braid) to calibrate it. There is one bridge which is for MPH <> KPH; and there are combinations of bridges to offset it. There is probably a diagram  For example; this is my conversion for a 180km/h dial to a 320km/h dial (I put custom GT-R dials on it with the GTS25t layout) If you have J2 soldered (assuming the S clusters have a similar config to the R clusters); you may need to remove that solder
    • Back on topic 😉, these are some of the notable pages from the booklets that are supplied with each weekly parts update. I never knew the BNR32 test mule car had an S13 Silvia front end... *Edit: On closer inspection the test car still had the R32 body, but only the front end had Silvia panels etc.
