Guys im getting a custom front facing plenum, for my rb25/30, this will help solve not only the bonnet clearance issues but also the intercooler piping / fan grind ;). Wondering what size throttle body to go, at the moment tossing up between xf and Q45 90mm, would the Q45 be too big and laggy for a 3L??

Still an rb20det box as mr_rbman....

Priorities + at the time I couldn't find one for a reasonable price, they were all $1.7-2k, hell even tracking down an rb20det box most wanted up around $800 :happy:

I had to have the car back on the road quickly; heheh there's always next time, and I'm sure there will be. ;)

Whats your IC piping?

The XF T/B is 65mm so 2.5", I can't see any real gains by having a t/b thats dia is larger than that of your ic piping.

The Q45 t/b is 90mm I believe.. So pretty damn big, wasted if your running 2.5" piping.. But I may be wrong, I'm only speculating and I've wrong many times before. :happy:

Q45 is acutally 83mm

i have done testing on XF and 80mm tb's and have noticed hardly any difference between the two. obviously power gains were had with the 80mm, not huge but noticeable but its up to you

recommend a 3" intake side and 2.5" turbo side for the cooler piping

Cooler piping is 2.5" and im sure the Xf tb is bigger then 65mm thats the stock rb size isnt it? Bigger tb will still let in more air up top but i guess will give more lag down low...

I got my Z32 ;) now Sard 800cc twin spray injectors on the way too! :)

I remember they could be picked up in either 65 or 68mm. The 68mm's are super rare.

my IC piping is 2.5" all the way and it uses a reducer from the std TB to that size... i dont see how a larger TB on a turbo will help as the pipe is all one diameter and compressed... having a bigger opening for 100mm before the plenum i dont see how that would help in performance

My only guess would be due to reduce turbulence caused by the butterfly valve. The valve in its self provides a restriction so a slightly larger dia than the pipe used would be required to match airflow.

wonder if knife edging the butterfly plate would help

big thing would the the bar that attaches the plate to the throttle mechanism...

bit hard to smooth the airflow past that ..

just dont wanna hassle around with the new wiring etc, as lots of people have been having trouble wiring up the Q45 to the std wiring

not really Craved. Its actually quite simple. We had it almost figured out by ourselves and then Slide came along with his diagram and that made it easy to finish off. We have a q45 tb on our greddy plenum on the 25/30. This is in a s2 r33 also.

The old piping which has just come off...was 2.5" from turbo outlet to the Inlet of intercooler then 2.5" with transition to 3" to the throttlebody, which has a silicon reducer on it to suit the 90 tb.

The new piping I will be fabricating this week sometime to suit the new ARE intercooler will be 2.5" from turbo outlet with transition to the 3" for inlet on intercooler and then 3" out and all the way upto the tb.

You'll quickly find that you'll soon be maxing out those injectors. So i'd look at some larger ones, maybe 720cc's or even 800cc's (their the same price so y not go bigger). Also depends on what cams ur going for will determine if you need to upgrade ur springs. Also the rb30 wont be revving too hard (nothing near 8000rpm i hope) so you shouldnt need to do the valvetrain if everythings in ok order.

So i'd suggest Sard 800cc injectors, BOSCH 044 fuel pump, some JUN or TOMEI 264duration 9.25mm lift IN 272 duration 9.25mm lift EX cams & some cam gears (not hks ones, as they have been known to slip)

Then a retune and you should be seeing some decent power :laugh:

Probably didn't make my first post very clear, i'm currnetly making 228rwkw's which feels quite nice on the street but as always more is better, I'm thinking with a FPR i should be able to make a safe/reliable 270 rwkw's (with my GTR injectors) which will suit me just fine, i figure that cams is whats holding me back engine/power wise!

But as R33racer said i definitely don't have endless pockets so i'm going to take a bit of a risk and get some GTR cams and get a weld and regrind done to them along with some cam gears and at the same time i'll get my valvesprings installed along with my fuel pump and FPR.

I figure these mods will get me up somewhere round my goal then i'll start saving for an rb25 gearbox and new clutch, unlike Cubes my car isn't a daily driver so i can afford to have it off the road for a while and at the moment my gearbox hasn't shown any signs of going bang and i do baby my shifts 95% of the time!

Mine didn't show any signs of stripping teeth either..

Mine had an input shaft bearing noise from day one, it had only slightly got louder + it wasn't a bearing that failed anyway. :woot:

Its not the gear changes that break the box its the pure torque, simply loading it up in third gear as you wind it out of a corner. Mine broke at partial throttle, wasn't even at wot. ;)

I posted up pics of the teeth that fell out of the drain plug on my old box, a few ppls in the know stated it failed due to fatigue.

Essentially the teeth reach their loading point then start bending slightly every time you give it stick, this slight bending slowly weakens them, similiar to bending a coat hanger to break it. Then one day... Bang. No more box clunk clunk. :ninja:

There is no sign that the box will go when it fails in such a way.

More power and you will need a gearbox.. I say sell yours while its still good so you get some kind of return on it to make up for the more expensive rb25 box, at least it won't hit your pocket as hard that way.

A few years ago we tested the standard RB25 inlet manifold, throttle body and 75 mm intercooler pipework on the flow bench and it showed almost zero pressure drop at an airflow rate equivalent to 500 bhp (300 rwkw). We didn’t test any higher as that was the limit of the standard RB30 internals..

On the R34GTT did the usually boost pressure test, comparing the boost pressure at the compressor outlet with the boost pressure at the plenum and at 315 rwkw there was less than 2 psi pressure difference. That’s with a standard R32GTR intercooler.

So until you get well over 300 rwkw I would be worried about the intercooler pipework, the throttle body or the inlet plenum being any sort of restriction

    • Sorry, just assumed that talk of coloured pads meant EBC red/green/yellow/shit stuff. I don't know the DBA pads, but it's a reasonable bet that they will be OK. DBA make good stuff generally. Those 4000 series rotors I linked to are very good. I may well replace the RDA rotors I have with those when required.
    • The average previous owner for these cars were basically S-chassis owners in the US. Teenagers or teenager-adjacent. I often tell people that neglect is easier to fix than something that was actively "repaired" by previous owners.
    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
