r33_racer i would have been expecting over 300kw on 18psi, damn the dyno must be reading hella low, mainly i think because its not running in shootout mode. But why would they NOT run it in shootout mode when all the other shops do run it in shootout mode, it'd make it alot easier to compare results etc.

If i was u, id be asking for it to be done in shootout mode, but spose its just a numbers things, still get the same tune.

yeh thats what we figured....a tunes a tune.

But we just heard the boost is spiking too high and its knocking its head off apparently...gotta change waste gate springs and use ebc to raise the boost slowly to the target 1.7bar... Hope we get good power without too much knock

Ok update, they've managed 300kw now on 1.1-1.2bar with knock around the 50's. Apparently the vct isnt working, so if they fix that they reckon they could get abit more out of it and abit more with some fine tuning. 8k redline and it still wants to keep going. Im guessing the 6boost manifold is doing good, as its not getting restricted anywhere, apparently the power curve is virtually perfectly straight and 45 all the way across the board. This sounds good so far :O since we were only hoping for 300rwkws but on higher boost, yet its been achieved with much lower boost. I wonder what it would get if done in shootout mode?

Excellent well done!! :D

Yeh it is abit high and yeh thats exactly right, no knock or next to no knock would be preferable. We will look at some further measures for later on to reduce the knock and hopefully increase the power. Maybe some bigger cams, bigger rear housing, thinking about water/meth injection like The Mafia has to help keep the intake charge cooler and keep the knock down.

Yeh seat of your pants dyno will be a good experience...will know how that is not next weekend, but the following one at QR for saturday sprints and sunday racing. HAHA if im lucky ill get a run in the practice sat morning. Old man is the lucky one who gets to race.... :P

With regards to knock..

Mine tends to have a consistent level of knock and if I dial in another degree it will then simply spike.

Its not like you throw another degree in it and you will see 60 then 70 then 90 it will go from 40-50 to 90-100+

Thats with mine anyway.

I have noticed something interesting that I didn't expect since I dropped a set of cooler plugs in.. Knock levels went from the usual 30,40's with the odd 50 to 13-20 max. Peak torque was also able to take another degree where as before it would always knock.

The 6's I pulled out according to the old spark plug reading method were simply too hot for the application.

I've now got 7's in it with zero fouling, however I don't leave the car idling warming it up, I simply start wait 30seconds while I throw on the seat belt etc and drive off slowly.

Now I've sorted out my cat that died it now screams up top however its now getting a little knock at around 5500rpm. :)

Time to throw it on the dyno again. Fixing the cat made a massive difference to spool and boost response. This is especially noticable in top gear at low rpm, now the boost guage simply flings to full boost.

Thats interesting, using one range cooler and your knock dropped that much. Good how something so simple can yield such a good result, not massive but significant enough to make it worthwhile.

Maybe it was a coincidence.

I will find out next time its on the dyno.

Out of curiosity.. What heat range plugs are you running?

300rwkw on the dyno I run on usually see's NGK 8's in the car.

Im not 100% either 6's or 7's....and memory is telling me to lean towards the 7's.

I think ive got the old man convinced on getting and trying the stage 2 boost cooler kit that The Mafia used up north, but with the maf controller. That should definetly help the knock issue and i believe would work perfectly for the circuit, especially since were not far off summer now, being only 1 season away.

for a dedicated track car, water/meth injection is a very good idea. just make sure you don't run out of the stuff halfway through a race.

re-tune it with the gear set up properly, i bet you can take another 3-4 degrees of timing in the power band and run leaner mixtures without detonation. it's very useful stuff.

pffft forged pistons are over rated mate....i got a set of pistons out of my mates old 250 crossflow, just threw them in....no worries mate, she does the trick nicely and didnt even cost me a cent!

Macgyver : yeh thats the plan, and it shouldnt be a problem as you you check all levels of fluids and fuel and everything before every race anyway, so it would just be on the list make sure the water/meth bottle is topped up. But im looking forward to the idea seeing the results with other peoples cars has been very good.

no offense but it was a silly question. You only had to go back a page or two and read about the pistons people were using and the question would have been answered. This aint calais turbo....were not bogans here :)

Anyway here is the dyno graph from the tune. They had problems with wheel spin, they couldnt keep the car down, with it strapped down as hard as they could get it and with a few fellas in the boot it still managed to wheelspin...They chewed up the re55 sr's...made a mess of their dyno room. You can see the blips on the plot.

So final figure was 320kw at 8000rpm, wanted to keep going but 8k redline is fine. That was on 1.3 bar, knock is around 50-70. So due to boost spiking and excessive knock, that was the highest boost we could run with. Next step is definetely the water/meth injection, bigger cams and probably the 1.06 rear depending on lag difference. 400kw would be great, and shouldnt be too hard to achieve with the future mods.

Hope its kewl to have this posted here. Will have to put it in the rb30 hybrid power thread too.
