Yes, it will drop straight in, so the story goes. 2. The story I've heard is that Holden agreed to buy 3L engines off Nissan, if Nissan never sold them in Japan, which led Nissan to find something else to power their GTR's with... hence the RB26DETT. Arias pistons now makes a piston to suit the RB30 block to RB25 Head conversion, this is good news in regards to compression ratio problems with this swap i think wiseco do aswell Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/15420-r33-rb30-conversion/page/19/#findComment-463789 Share on other sites
Sciby
OVL-747, thanks for the info on the water/oil points on the block... but which block is that for? Series 1 or 2? Cubes
The series 2 block will have the bits just plugged up not blanked off like the series 1. Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/15420-r33-rb30-conversion/page/19/#findComment-464314 Share on other sites
Sciby
Ahuh, well, there you go. Now I'll have to wait until I can get to my waiting engine (which is sitting in a shed on the other side of town) to see if it's a series 1 or 2... I want it in now. :~( Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/15420-r33-rb30-conversion/page/19/#findComment-464439 Share on other sites
nixcars
Hi Trev, Here's another idea, Total Seal make a good set of rings for the RB's. Top ring is ductile iron (much more durable), second ring is gapless & the the oil ring is 4mm wide instead of 2.5mm for graeter oil control. This means you have to machine your pistons. Sanding the rods is a very good idea as long as you sand in the one direction & then weigh each rod for balance & then get them shot peened as this also adds strength. I always skim the head & deck of the block (5 thou is plenty) as it gives a much better seal & I would also invest in a haed stud kit. My 2c. Nick. 1 more, (might have been mentioned, didn't read the 19 pages), but getting everything cryotuff treated, @ only $5 a kg it's cheap insurance. Contact LSW Group (02) 9773 0647. Nick. Cubes
What is cryotuff treated.. I've heard of it with Diff's etc but not engine internals. Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/15420-r33-rb30-conversion/page/19/#findComment-465460 Share on other sites

Skyrine-Dave
/que dumb question from dave Hello all. Upon pondering my upgrade i just thought of this. How do you control/activate the VVT ? Like the people using the R32 ECU... the R32 didnt have VVT so how do you 'stimulate' the solenoid to open to allow oil pressure onto the cam bearing ? just wondering how people with non R33 ecu's are activating the VVT if using it. Can the VVT oil feed just be bunged up and not used? Any harmful side effects? Cheers Dave Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/15420-r33-rb30-conversion/page/19/#findComment-466574 Share on other sites
Richelieu
This is probably a stupid idea but can you fit the spacer plate from the OS Giken 3L kit onto an RB30 block and then fit custom liners, crank and rods for an RB35? Cubes
You could rig up a little circuit that you make up from jaycar that reads the rpm signal and activates the vct solanoid at a certian rpm. .. Regards to the 3ltr kit spacer plate.. You most probably could with custom rods etc.. It would feel like an old 250 X-Flow ford motor then.. Making peak power at 3700rpm.. Skyrine-Dave
ahh good thinking. well i think i may just ditch the VVT in favour of future, very distant future, aftermarket cams and cam gear. Cubes
So did u get the NA or T head? Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/15420-r33-rb30-conversion/page/19/#findComment-466632 Share on other sites
Skyrine-Dave
T head, mainly for the stronger valve springs. Tho the more 'aggresive' cams of the NA might have been better. Cubes
So who said they are actually stronger? Isn't it a myth? Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/15420-r33-rb30-conversion/page/19/#findComment-466656 Share on other sites
Skyrine-Dave
no one who i fully trust said it. just myth i suspect. Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/15420-r33-rb30-conversion/page/19/#findComment-466668 Share on other sites
-scooter-
hey guys its not a myth!!!!!!!! The rb25de springs are softer coming at 39Lb and the DET coming in at 44 Lb!!!! That is what i have been told (by a very reliable source) But there is always that little chance that it could be wrong!!! Thats my 2 cents worth hope it helps. wilzlee
I've just got myself a set of tomei pistons 87mm... i thought of doing the conversion myself too but i am not sure where can i get a RB30 block from and how much would it cost. please help me. Can i do the conversion with a standard turbo? What are the things i have to replace? conrods? crankshafts? i have apexi power fc and avcr in my car already. Is the RB25DEt head a direct bolt onto the RB30 block?? please help.... thanks alot everyone.. GiJOr33
have a read through the 20 odd pages of this thread, it answers all your questions and will provide more information that you haven't thought off Standard turbo can be used, may be a little small you can keep conrods and crank shaft, but you may want to get them strangthened/balanced. RB25DET head is pretty much a straight bolt on if you don't want to use the Variable Vale Timing... but i strongly suggest you read this entire thread. Cubes
A set of Tomi 87mm Pistons you say.. They would be from the RB25? If so then the comp ratio with the extra deck height of the RB30 will be low.. Very low. You need to use RB30 Spec Pistons.
