Yeah I'm going to buy Ultimate 32bit OEM this paycheck. Its about $300 on www.auspcmarket.com.au I got a 3.9ghz P4 2 gigs of ram, 6800 Ultra 500gb sata 2 storage. At work I tested it on 3ghz P4's with 6600gt's and 1.5gb's of ram.

HAHA! I am currently trying to squeeze 4.0ghz out of it (setting up watercooling). Also putting another 1TB of storage in. Unfortunately the Skyline comes first as its going off the road in 4 months to get pumped up on steroids :D Vista runs quite nicely as long as you have LOTS of memory and a decent DirectX9C video card. (Mine is VERY overclocked) When it melts ill buy a new system :(

Im gonna look into it purely because my XP is on the blink big time!

So instead of a reformatt in XP im gonna give vista a go, and to all the people that are thinking of getting it dont be suckered in to paying $100's more for a retail version.

Jump on the net and get a OEM version.

Vista Ultimate Retail = ~$700

Vista Ultimate OEM = ~$300

Differance? I think you get it in a box and thats about it. Maybe you get a manual too but... Why?

Good thing is currently my game of choice is CSS again (dunno why i headed back to it) and i deff know it works on Vista so that should keep me happy.

It will be running on a AMD 4000+, 2GB RAM, 7900GT 512mb, 180gb hdd with another 320gb on the way.

Aero should look good, can't wait, wank factor ahoy :(

Aero looks awesome but Linux is fighting back and showing some elsupremo eye candy

, Im going to try and get Beryl up and running on my Xeon linux box over the weekend cause it looks SCHWEET. As for Vista, It certainly likes more ram than XP and needs shitloads more storage space but should run very nicely on an AMD 4000+. Go the 64bit version for sure!!!

Yeah im deff looking at picking up another 2GB of RAM....

However i dunno if i read correctly but, it says vista can use a virtual drive as ram...

So a 1-4GB Flash drive in thoery could be used as ram?

Thinking about gettin a x2 processor as well but the only problem is AMD dont make socket 939's any more so i have to try and find a decent socketed 939 x2 processor, and there are a couple on Ebay, there was even a 46 or 4800 x2 on there but pricey.

Had a computer techy come round to fix dad's comp yesterday.. My dad asked him about Vista and he basically said it's going to be useless for atleast 12 months after release as not many people will be running it and there will be numerous compatibility issues with other people not using vista etc etc.. He also said it's nothing special in general it uses alot of space because Microsoft have tried to make it look really pretty.

So we're all just paying for another of Microsoft's package with a few little tweaks and a bunch of shiny attractive lights, which could just as easily be released as a patch or something.. But Microsoft would never ever do that lol..

LOL

GOLD

But not on topic though.

Anyone got any more experience using Vista as yet?

EDIT:

TWEAKS? PRETTY THINGS?

Dude this is a bit more than what this "techy" has so simply put to your dad.

I dont think there would be that many problems with compatibility between Vista and XP cause thats something that would of had to of been considered when building this OS. Not everyone is gonna have Vista, plus ALOT and i mean ALOT of major businesses still use an even older OS, take us for example i work for the SA Gov and we are still using Win 2000, there is talk of us POSSIBLY upgrading to XP this year but. Point is like i said that would of been a major thing to think about when building this OS

I work in the IT Department at a bleeding edge software developer, and we are currently evalutaing Vista to roll it out to all of our Software engineers in the Sydney Technology Centre. I have had just about every version available (Ultimate, Business and Enterprise) running on machines ranging from an AGP 3.0Ghz P4 with 1 gig of ram and an ATI X1600 Pro video card to a Core Duo E6400 machine with 7950GT video and 2 gigs of DDR667 ram. Vista runs very nicely on the P4, but adding even 512MB more ram makes a massive difference. Also adding a high performance hard drive (eg 7200.10 seagate or even raptor) also makes a great difference. Running on an old 2mb cache 7200rpm drive it was a bit slow loading.

Interesting point was that on the Core Duo machine, Vista FLEW and actually ran faster than XP on the same computer. I would sum this up as Vista having much better multi threaded performance on a machine with multiple CPU's. So it will run really well on any dual core machine.

Here is an flow chart to help you decide if you need to upgrade:

:ninja::):laugh:

BTW Vista is awesome but just like XP dont screw around with the home versions. Buy at least Business or Ultimate. U can pick Ultimate OEM up for $300 which is a great price.

LOL

Flow chart was awesome!

When i upgrade which will be in the next couple of months (give em a lil more time to iron out the security flaws) i'll be going with Ultimate.

Really looking forward to it actually!

SO you say a 7200rpm HDD with 6mb Cache should rock it?

I would love a 7500rpm but i can't justify a smaller capacity for the faster speed.

BTW anyone got a x2 AMD Socket 939 processor above or = to 4000+ that they wanna sell?

If you pick up any current generation SATA2 7200RPM 16MB cache drive you should be fine. Make sure that it has perpendicular recording as well. The Seagate 7200.10 series drives are the most advanced and reliable on the market at the moment.

A Raptor is a 10,000PRM enterprise class drive. They have an extremely faster seek time and you will notice a difference in load times between a Raptor and any other drive. The only faster drives on the market are 15,000RPM enterprise hard drives and these only come in SAS and Fibre Channel and are also very noisy.

You will also have to take a look at your video card. Vista needs to have a DirectX9.0C Shader Model 3.0 compliant video card to use Aero. This means at least a 6 series Nvidia Geforce or an X1000 series AMD/ATI Radeon.

    • It only looks tidy, as most of the stuff that was on the whole back wall, is now in the trailer to go to the tip, or has been shoved in my 2.2x2.4m "Spare parts room", and now I can't get to anything in there Ha ha ha I could definitely do with a bit more space, but I'd just end up with your problems I'm going to enclose the car port beside the garage, and move a lot of stuff into it I think. OR... It will be setup as a fabrication area, and the main garage will have parts storage in it. I'm not sure yet... Need some pictures of that big shed you've got with the bikes and Skyline in
    • No. I think it's gone. 😭 I think you can get body coloured ones on eBay so I think I'll get one of those... Or just hang a red ribbon from the hole and whack a TOW sticker next to it.
    • Can't say I've had a bad experience with one on my car, then again it only gets washed once or twice a year... The wheels on the other hand, get a good spray often due to my shitty dusty pads.
    • @MBS206 thats pretty neat and tidy to me!  I'll get a photo of mine when I'm out there next. It might require multiple photos to understand the scale of the atrocities though... In total I have 4 sheds of varying sizes and layouts. Main shed is 14x8, second shed is 3x8, third shed is 11x2.5, fourth shed is around 6x4.  All are pretty much full.   The main goal of my cleaning tsunami is to make the main shed predominantly car and motorbikes only. Second shed is my metal fab room (2 x bench grinders, drill press, bench belt sander, metal band saw, scrap metal storage and some of my garden tools.  3rd shed is more bigger garden stuff, storage for engine crane, jack stands, concrete grinder, concrete mixer, air compressor lives there, and it now has two 2mx2m pallet racking shelves with itemised boxes holding building stuff, electrical stuff, plumbing stuff, etc, etc.  The 4th shed is Ryobi electric ride on mower, mini boom sprayer, ancient Kubota tractor, more garden stuff!  I have got a lot of shit....  Then there's the pool house (8mx4m) and the pool pump shed (4mx4m).  I built all of the sheds over the 11 years we've been here.  The main shed was a Ranbuild kit, the rest are all custom made to fit the areas available. Building the main shed taught me a LOT as I had no idea about building anything prior to that!  I've still got one more in me. It will be my man cave which I poured the extra concrete for way back when I poured the concrete for the main shed. The idea is the Skyline will be a centre piece of the main cave once (if...) it's finished.  I told my now 14 year old son yesterday that I will 100% drive him to his year 10 formal in 2 years. Still a long way off but at least I now have a date to work towards! 🤣
