I should get my 33 back tomorrow. It is currently getting my Apline CD head unit and 11 band EQ fitted in the 2 din space, 5.25in Infinity Kappa splits up front, Infinty Kappa 6x9 in a custom shelf up the back, Soundstream 4x40RMS Amp and a the new Alpine dual bus/MP3 capable 6stacker fitted. I had a 10in Kappa 10in sub which I sold about 4 years ago thinking, "I will never use that again". I can't wait to get my car back tomorrow and have some nice sounds again but I think I may feel a little hollow with no "real" bass. Do you guys thinks it will be worth going subs? (Gee I wonder what the answer to that will be?!). And what is good at the moment. I like clean, tight bass, not really into big SPL numbers. What do you guys recommend? Sick of hearing salesman trying to sell what they are overstocked in! Possibly a 12 in, with small sealed box. Must be as small a possible, and approx $$

Thanks

i totally agree on ur comment about salesmen trying to sell overstocked stuff !!!! ... u definitely need a sub ... i don't have a sub in my car at the moment ... so when i go into someone elses car i definitely notice the huge difference .. can i ask how much ur splits cost?? and how good a brand is infinity??

Exactly.. best to do the research yourself and make your own purchasing decision IMHO. Never trust a salesperson - half the time they don't know what they are talking about (although in defense, some do really know their stuff but its rarer).

Sheech.. hate to see the final bill for all that, hopefully it sounds as good as it will cost :P

You'll want a sub if u want punchier bass.. it is worth it and makes a huge difference to the overall system. A single 10" in a nice box if u can get it cheap ($300 - $400 ?) will do ok but don't expect massive noise.. single 12" will sound great as long as you have decent amp to power it (what i'm playing with right now).

you should have probably skipped on the 6x9's as the only reason you'd run those is for bass and if you *didn't* want to run a sub. Not worth the extra mucking around I wouldn't think (skyline was never designed for them).

I used to run a pair of amped 6x9's + 6.5" pair setup in my old car (much lower spec than yours but it sounded ok). In my current setup, running a 10" sub (and now setting up a 12" to replace that), cheapish cd deck and just the stock speakers I'm liking that sound a lot better with the extra sub feel. Once i get some good splits for the front, and some fairly cheapish 6" for the back its going to sound beautiful :(

You didn't hear this from me, but beware the Infinity's!!!

I have a lot of inside information with these, don't want to say too much cos' I'll get in trouble... (but since it's SAU I think I ought to let you know.)

Much of Infinity's older stock (read 90%) has been returned to the distributor because the cones were not UV protected. If they were left in sunlight (grille off, or grille on on the parcel shelf) the cones literally shatter from the vibration.

I have seen them last for six months, I have also seen them only last a week. This is true of both their Reference & Kappa series. The Kappa Perfects are ok (so far), they have an alloy cone (with a 100W RMS rating, they need it!)

Notice I said the older stock, anything that is new (purchased from the distributor in the past two months) has had this problem fixed.

If this does happen, you still have your 12 month warranty (they are being honoured of course!)

Beyond this, I'd personally rate Infinity high range (anything other then subs) as "good", not excellent. Their subs are...crap. Voice coils waaaaay too small for what they're rated at, magnets too small... (I've outperformed even the Kappa Perfect sub both in quality & quantity, with a $6 sub in a $20 box!)

If you want/need any more info, PM me.

Yes this is so true, my freind had a pair of the reference spilts in his back parcel shelf and they just crumbled to bits after being left out in the sun. Ive got the the Kappa Perfects and iv had no problems with them at all.

Rockford Fosgate make some nice subs even there base model Punch series are very clean and hard hitting bass. But require a pretty capable amp

The only thing I bought new was the stacker. Everything else is old. The Kappa speakers I bought in 96 the CD/EQ in 95 and the amp in 97. I haven't had a problem with the Infinity speakers. They are in their 4th car now and still look as good (and sound as good) as the day I bought them. I did hear that the build quality on the Infinity speaker went down though, not really sure what they are like at the moment. I got mine from the states as a friend of mine went over and bought them back for me. Can't remember exactly how much they were then but I do remember saving a packet.

Install is great though. The shelf is ****ing fantastic, well worth the money. If I can work out a way to take a pic I shall post it. Not a whole lot of room to take a decent pic and the tint is too dark to take a pic through the glass. Sounds nice but I think I will be on the search for a sub. That was my first thought, "sounds good but imagine it with a Sub!". Bit dissapointed with the front splits as I mounted them in the factory spots and the sound image is pretty ordinary. The tweeter and woofer are just too far apart. I will have to think about that one.

The guys at the shop were trying to sell me an eclipse sub. Never heard of them before now. They looked pretty wicked. Anyone had any experience with these?

They even wired up my HKS type 1 turbo timer so the alarm will now arm even when the timer is in action. Very cool!

Just thought I would post a few pic of the install, might give a few people ideas. I wanted something that looked as factory as possible and I think I have achieved that. Mind you if I add a sub later on that will change. I have pics of the HU&EQ mount. The factory front door fittings, the custom rear shelf, with grill on and off, and the boot showing the stacker in the factory spot and the amp hidden away behind the trim. Quite a tidy result.

Nah, everything just fits, I think computer thingy you speak of is the HICAS computer. The shelf did act as a spacer as it is thicker were the speakers are. Not sure by how much though as I didn't make it myself. The Infinity 6x9s are quite deep though and yet everything still fits ok. There is probably only 5mm separating them though, its a tight squeeze, but if you are not going to go to subs in the future it will be worth the effort!
