Hi All,

I was looking under my GTR today and the front wheels obviously have some crazy ass camber... the outside front tyres are like 80% (easy - maybe more) and an inch or so of the inside is bald as a mofo! Anyone know the best way to correct this? Camber tops maybe?

Also, when i turn right sometimes i hear/feel a slight clunk from the rear of the car? any ideas?

my mechanic told me GTRs come like that. he said the camber settings when adjusted to their mildest would still be too aggressive for road use.

to cure this either get adjustable camber kits or keep changing tyres regularly like me and enjoy the camber in corners.

i also get a clunking noise. not too sure what it is tho...have heard it might be hicas or LSD, but no one seems able to confirm this.

clunk - passengers without seatbelts?

just get a wheel alignment and have them show you the before and after camber levels. could also be toe in problem, not camber - that was the cause of excessive inner wear on my rear tyres

and while we are talking about camber

my front right wheel has more camber then the left (as in +ve? bald inside ) which effects the steering (drags to the left even after alignment ... cause ... a possible bent axel stub (the big chunk of metal with wheel and brake attached)

would adjustable camber tops fix this temp ? I will be after them anyway (running base model ) or adjustable castor rods

I have no idea about suspension/handling set up at the moment.

Christian, notwithstanding the difference between GTR's and GTSt's....I had the same problem as my car was excessively lowered...the tyres wore on the inside (front and rear). I was advised to see a particular place here in Canberra by my mechs. Apparently the solution is to extend the adjusting points as the standard adjustment cannot real them back in far enough. I had mine fixed for around $600 dollars....now they be fine. Tyres are too expensive to be replacing every year!

Don't laugh....you may be right...I'm not really sure. I was told that my camber (castor/toe in.....whatever you call it) problem was because of the excessive lowering. I have TEINs all round and pretty wide 17's. I get the impression that if you put back on the correct wheels and spring/shocks...the problem would be gone. I liked the height of my car, so I chose to have the problem solved whilst keeping the low stance. Mate, I don't know if raising it would help or not, but if you like it, get the adjusting points lengthened and reel in those wheels. The way I see it is 'yeah, it's ok for race cars to have horrific camber for cornering/grip, but they can afford to go through multiples of tyres, but us mere mortals can't. (Go for the fix....it'll cost you half the four tyres worth that you wont have to replace next year....best of luck)

Guys, you might want to look at a castor correction kit from Whiteline. These are only a few hundred (at most)from memory and will sort everything out. Check out www.whiteline.com.au and its a good idea to call them so as they can recommend a shop in your area that will install them.

Or you can buy the whole Whiteline handling pack for around $850 installed which includes adjustable swaybars and a castor and camber kit. Makes a huge difference to handling and you dont get the harsh ride of coilovers.

I have put Cusco adjustable caster rods and whitelite adjustable camber kits up front, and a cusco camber adjustable upper arm at the rear. No more alignment problems no matter the ride height. Well worth the money to have perfect alignment and save those tyres!

You have all certainly put my mind at rest! the clunk isn't huge, and makes no difference (ie, i can't feel anything change).

Thanks again guys, its booked in for a service next week (and might get the power fc installed at the same time!! :D :D :D) so i will get my mech to just double check it.

For those interested, I had a wheel alignment and the camber was fine (apparently) but i had about 4mm toe-in which they fixed, so apparently its all good now.. lets just see how quickly i rip through my Pirrellis.

    • That's the thing. Especially at idle, changing the cam angle by that much could be spewing more fuel out the exhaust courtesy of everything happening that bit later. More fuel also means more air (if the fuel didn't burn, then neither did the O2) and so the O2 sensors can start to tell interesting but misleading stories. And the specifics of what is happening could easily be affected by everything else you changed as well. And it could be dynamic, where a few revs more or less could somewhat change how the engine is breathing.
    • Good idea on the temp probe. The mv readings of the O2 sensors are very similar to one another, as is the injector pw. I went through logs in the past to see if there was a discrepancy and there is. Because they alternate up and down as narrowbands do.. they do often 'switch' as to which one is more. They were never 20%+ (more like 1-2%) so it's possible the difference between 20 and 15-17% is a similar discrepancy to 2.0% and 1.7% which I wouldn't have really noticed in the past. We did think about spacing the strut brace. Unfortunately the ~20mm that the GTR brace is lower than the GTT brace is effectively what you need to clear the vents. Moving it up would make it very uncomfortable, but it's plausible that 10mm is a unhappy medium between both hard places... The good news is.. using MR HAMMER it was actually pretty easy to bend back the bent bits to make sure the guard and headlight/new headlight tabs line up right. Yes, we used a R34 GTR guard to make sure the bolt holes all lined up with a known straight guard. As above, you can see the side skirt and the GTR guard are not meant to play together, but everyone seems to think this is a simple fix to the point where nobody who has had these talk to one another mentions how... ...so I'll just assume they know how to fix it when it comes to paint jail time again. Whoever they are. Nobody returns my calls. There's so much changed with regard to the ECU and the car.. that the next step really is to connect the scanner and attempt to drive the thing. It'll be pretty clear pretty fast how in or out everything actually is...
    • That's nasty! I think there is perhaps an inherent problem is using elastomers in such environments. The whole thing can and will get quite hot, and elastomers are not famous for their temperature resistance. On top of that, if the components are cast rubber or urethane and so on, there might be QA/QC problems with bubbles or voids in the material that could critically change their performance. They might just tear apart after being squished (presuming that any elastomers are used in compression rather than tension, I'm thinking that you squeeze one with a void in it and it tears the wall of the void to the outer edge of block, then the next time it extends or otherwise twists, it just gives up). This is all purely hypothetical, but it makes me wonder if the things that they have put into it to make it nice to use/live with are perhaps going to cause occasional failures like this. I wouldn't be getting up in arms over it, unless there are many repeats. I have personally ruined an Xtreme clutch - just an HD thing. I can't remember if it was still behind the 20 or was after the 25 went in. But it inverted some of the retaining spring/clip things around the outside. No-one could explain it. It wasn't thrashed, there wasn't heaps of torque being put through it, and there were no obvious problems other than the above. They were quite concerned by the event so they replaced it even though it was a few years old, which was very nice of them. As far as I am concerned, these things happen with clutches.
