Ok, it is time... well, it's actually overdue. 11K's km extra put on the clock (since importing) and it's time for a nice big old service (checked the oils/filters bout 3K's km in and looked fine, sparkies and coilpacks done quite early after car landed)

anywho... with some huge help from "khunjeng" i have been recommended the following...

Engine Oil

- Redline 10w40, if not...

- Motul 300V series, if not...

- Mobil 1 0w40 (lower if possible)

Gearbox Oil

- Redline Shockproof lightweight

Diff Oil

- Castrol Syntrax 75w90 (does series 1 R34 have a helical or viscous LSD?)

Oil Filter

- OEM Nissan

- any other thoughts on this one?

Fuel Filter

- Paper filter?

Air Filter

- Paper filter?

Oh, and i heard that Ryco make shite products, and to stay clear of them?

Ok, question time...

Mainly filters...

- Can OEM Nissan oil filters be bought anywhere besides nissan?

- What other oil filters do the job?

- Air and fuel filters? Which ones for these? I don't have big power, got a full 3" exhaust on in the next week or so, but still, car will be lightly modded.

How many litres do i need for...

-engine?

-gearbox?

-diff?

I'd love to go with the best stuff, but my goodness Redline is expensive!! Is is really worth the extra $?

Where bouts could i pick up Motul oil?

cheers!

daniel

- Can OEM Nissan oil filters be bought anywhere besides nissan? err no, thats what oem stand for -origional equipment from manufacturer

- What other oil filters do the job?

- Air and fuel filters? Which ones for these? I don't have big power, got a full 3" exhaust on in the next week or so, but still, car will be lightly modded. K&N replacement panel for std box, or apexi pod? Just use ryco fuel filter...

I'd love to go with the best stuff, but my goodness Redline is expensive!! Is is really worth the extra $? No

Where bouts could i pick up Motul oil? Do a search, or ask in your local state forum

Dont forget a coolant flush and change

Edited by Bl4cK32

ok, googled...

found a lot of bad stuff bout ryco... basically people cutting them open and comparing to other brands. I'll prob just go genuine Nissan for a few extra bucks. $10-$15 i was finding at justjap.com for various filters.

Motul is available at recpo and autobarn... which is strange because my closest autobarn doesn't have it. Oh well, at least i know some big places have it.

I take it Castrol SAF-XA is different to Syntrax?

Yes, have standard air box.

Coolant... right... didn't think about that. Thanks :)

hehe, now... is coolant, coolant? or is it like oils as well? :P

nulon coolant or tectaloy seem to be the best, and dilute it to the recommended amount.

People who make it stronger are kidding themselves thinking it will work better, when it doesnt.

If u wanna be a nut with the service, change the thermostat as well.

genuine nissan are much better (compare the spring to an aftermarket item) Ive never had trouble using genuine thermostats..

  • 3 weeks later...

too busy! must get around to this...

anywho...

I gave Nissan a call, do these prices sound ok?

(these are OEM Nissan filters)

- Oil: $16

- Fuel: $33 (are fuel filters generally more expensive?)

- Air: $18

Would i be ok just to go down and pick all the filters in one hit? Is genuine Nissan stuff good enough?

cheers,

daniel

OEM fuel filters are always dearer.

but they are a better product overall.

stay with genuine.

ive seen ryco, repco etc filters leaking etc....

the prices u got are good. pretty normal.

what nissan dealer was it?

cool, that's good to hear. Wasn't that keen running around chasing 3 different brands :spank:

I rang Brighton Nissan, nice and helpful over the phone. And they have the stuff in stock. The guy said they suit quite a few models, so shouldn't much drama with supply.

(03) 9563 9977

i'd imagine prices would be much of a muchness, regardless of dealership.

right getting it down..

mobil 1

castrol syntrax

OEM filters

just gotta confirm gearbox oil.

I was told to do an oil flush? Does this mean a specific product to flush out all the old oil build up? Or is it just using more Mobil 1 to do the flush?

cheers,

daniel

hey, i just seached and found this topic. perfect, im doing the same thing :D.. so you used: Mobil 1 0w40 for engine oil?, does any one know the queensland dealership or number i can call nissan to gain some filters also?, or is it just on there website?

i used www.whitepages.com.au

Do a 'business' search, put in 'nissan' and choose Queensland. Find the nearest dealership, and give them a call. Will most likely have in stock. I'm going down tomorrow to pick up the filters, haven't got all the oils yet. Will be organising that tomorrow as well.

    • One of the first jobs with the E39 is making sure the tailgate stays up. In BMW fashion they made a little cavity under the roof to hide the dampers rather than putting them down the side like everybody else.  As you can see I have these little cavities that house the dampers. When I cleared one out and vacuumed as much crap as I could out of it I noticed a fair bit of rust. The cavity is bone dry, even after all that rain we had only a few days ago so I'm assuming that whatever allowed the moisture in is fixed but I'd like to treat the rust in there.  I was thinking of just blasting it full of rust converter but I didn't know if this would be beneficial considering I can't actually get in there to prep anything.  Maybe there's a better product?  Thanks guys
    • Had a few skylines over the years anyway bought this a few years ago for skidz i think it’s been around these traps for a while anyway I plan to thrash and trash and I assume it’s going to send me broke good times
    • The stock boost solenoid is just a valve. Power it and it is open. Unpowered, it is closed. When it is closed, there is no boost bleed out through the solenoid back to the inlet. The wastegate sees all the boost pressure, thus you get the wastegate's spring pressure as your boost pressure. 5 psi. When it is open, it lets some boost escape. This causes the static (boost) pressure in the line to the wastegate to be lower than the pressure in the intercooler pipe. There is probably a small restrictor in the solenoid or one of its lines to limit the flow rate of the escaping air, which limits how far the static pressure can fall, which limits the extra boost. The boost has to climb above the original/wastegate setpoint until the wastegate sees 5 psi. You get 7 psi in the intercooler pipework. A manual boost controller is exactly the same setup, just without the ability to change it on-off. It's always set to whatever you set it to. There is a small leak from the boost controller. The more you screw the adjuster in, the more it leaks, the lower the pressure seen at the wastegate and the higher the boost will be. So, yes, your diagrams are correct.
    • Hi everyone, Apologies in advance if this feels like a topic covered multiple times. I'm only asking because some of the old topics I found are missing images now. I'm in the process of getting a manual boost controller (BC). Nothing fancy, just getting a manual one for now as I don't plan to go crazy with it and would not go over 10 PSI. My car is not jacked up on boost steroids to do crazy numbers. I want to understand the OEM setup of the boost solenoid and vacuum lines on the R34 GTT so I know what needs to be changed when I do install the BC. I sketched the current setup to the best I could see and it's on the diagram attached. If the boost controller 'Wastegate Arrow' goes from nipple 1 to 2. My understanding is that the red vacuum line's "F" connector-end should be connected to BC nipple #2? Nipple #1 is meant to have the "pressure source" so what vacuum line would that be? Is it the green vacuum line?  From what I have read here, the OEM boost solenoid is not used at this point. So that can come out and then I can just plug the nipple that usually connects to the blue vacuum line?  So would the final setup look something like this?   Thanks in advance. I don't want to already be knee-deep into pulling out vacuum lines before understanding this. I'm a noob when it comes to boost setups so trying to learn as I go.
