Cheers mate. Thanks for all your input on the topic. it really helped me to work out where mine was out and what needed to be changed to get it pass.

Good work mate!!

Wow, nice tuning to drop it that much, good effort.

Just out of curiousity, when do you need to go for an EPA test? When you get defected more than a certain amount of times in a year? Or is it something the cops can stick on you, by looking at a highly tuned engine?

if you get pulled over and defected the police can nominate you to get a IM240 test OR in my case i did it because you NEED it to get a engineer's certificate which is what i will be getting next pay

So now we all know it can be done, I have heard of others playing the same game and have been up to their eyeballs for months tring to beat that test. Its a real credit to u.

The biggest question is now this.. How come u can acheive this? you have a serious HP figure, reasonably good ecconomy, U passed the EPA test and I'm guessing that u passed the noise test. So why do Australian cars keep getting made with such poor performancce! If just one poor bloke can tackle the issue and work his way through it, then what is going on with the engineers at Holden and Ford?

I hope they NEVER figure out what we want in a car.. I'll just buy my next car off you thanks!

hmm, so y did u have to get the certificate to start with?

Anyway GREAT WORK! I like to keep my car leagal, i guess now i should copy your lead!

Cheers for the support mate.

The reason is that I passed my car to comply with 95 model emissions - when holden or whoever are making there cars they have to comply with 2007 emissions so that would make it much tougher and harder.

I do know of many people who have gone for this test and failed I was just determined to get it done because i really want my car to be legal and this is the MAJOR hurdle for getting that done.

my car has

Front mount intercooler

Apexi Power FC

Apexi Pod filter hidden in front bar

Top mount manifold with ext gate (plumbed back)and gt3540 700hp turbo

Plasmaman Plenum

Nismo 740cc injectors

500hp walbro pump (to be upgraded to bosh 044 800hp for more power)

600x300x100 intercooler

Forged pistons and forged hbeam rods

I have not passed the noise test yet but that is easy! probly the easiest part of this whole ordeal.

I may be interested in doing some emission tunes for people to get there cars pass - might get a couple of friends cars pass first to get alot more confident with it.. my mate said i can hire his dyno anytime to do the cars so it may be something i will get into because i really enjoy it.. its great fun and gives me heaps of satisfaction when i get results.. first was 317rwkw now the IM240...

How does that work ? emissions are emissions.. i still have to get a engineers certificate for all the modifications. All i have done today is get the proof that my car is still complient with the emissions for that model car AFTER the modifications are installed.

wow im surprised they let you clear given the modificaitons done

epa in vic wouldnt let that pass for peanuts

as soon as its aftermarket anything pretty much no chance

Yeah but the IM240 test is designed to make sure the car is still in compliance with the emissions from factory so even after all the modifications this tests tells them that it is still OK. Thats how it works in NSW.

My engineer wants to see the test and make sure its all below the standards before he will give me a certificate.

well vic epa is of the impression that any modifications, like most you have listed modify the cars factory emissions, therefore no chance.

But what happens if you modify your car just so that it produces LESS emmisions?

How can they fail that modification?

The logical answer is they can't, just because it happens to produce more power as a result of those mods is irrelevant.

They can't test for motive, only result.

This test further proves how illogical the emmisions laws are, you have to tune the car to use MORE fuel so that it passes. How dumb is that? Plenty of professional automotive engineers around Australia are amazed that this stupidity continues. There is a new article about it every few months or so in the trade journals, all with the same theme. How can we put up with a law that requires ALL cars to use MORE fuel to pass an out of date emmisions test?

 cheers

Its because when you run them lean and good economy they are running hotter - the hotter the combustion tempreture is the more bad emissions get released into the atmosphere.

I guess thats why its like the way it is. You have to burn more fuel to get a cooler burn so your not releasing bad gas into the atmosphere - the limits do change from year to year but they just keep getting higher and higher and higher.

I believe this testing method IM240 dates back to 1970 something in the US where they emulated a standard taxi drive somehwere in california (or something like that)

If they change it - it may be even harder to pass... leave it how it is i say.. I must admit it was not as hard for me to get my car right then everyone makes it out to be.

You got it, emmisions testing have always been pretty much rehashes of the California tests. Which were designed for SMOG reduction, keeping in mind the variation is engine sizes (Yanks like big engines). Therefore they rely on % emmisions rather than absolutes. Plus they aren't real world, the air going into the engine being tested is clean, which never happens in the real world. The old story, the air going into the engine is dirtier than the air coming out of it.

The emmissions testing is oxymoronic, it only looks at what comes out, and does not include the emmisions produced by what goes in. Using more fuel arguably creates more total "pollution" than the increased tail pipe emmissions created when the engine is not at its maximum fuel efficiency. Dumb isn't it?

:D cheers :P

The VIC legislation is totally different to NSW.

So there is little point trying to compare the two.

Its just a lot of rubbish. Apples & Oranges

Its the same country, it should all be the same IMO. Not as if the air we breathe is just for that state

But alas, the Bracks Gov't is just a muppet convention and has caused most of these Vic problems giving the Vic EPA too much power and changing too much legislation.

Im actually going to find out in detail the Vic stuff over the next 3-4 months as a personal mission to win :D

Good stuff on getting your car passed NSW laws :P

in vic you wouldnt pass on the single fact that you have an external gate.. they are not aloud if they are plumbed in on not for some stupid reason...

but yeah well done, thats great work!!

What about cars that have external gates standard?

:D cheers :P

lol, they probably figure Maclaren F1 and Ferrari F40 owners are rich enough to just cop the fines! and they are probably right.

Buit in order to get fined they had to get them registered in the first place

:D cheers :P

PS; McLaren F1's BMW = N/A 6 litre V12 (basically 2 x M3 engines using a common crank)

yeah good point! i know that. hell I even got a ride in one back in about 1996. :D

at least i got the F40 right... lol.
