Just so you know mate, the 180sx is an S13. Wasn't sure if you were aware.

If you do go that route I can say you won't be dissapointed, but I'm sure I could say the same thing for an R32/33. They're a hell of a lot of fun, relatively quick, easy to modify, parts are plentiful, the SR is rock solid (well mine has been) and there is a gamut of information out there on them. Plus they look great in my opinion

There's also not many running around the track days here in Vic, so it's nice to have something a little bit different.

If you've got any questions, or want to check mine out or whatnot, feel free to ask man and I'll do my best to give you any info you need.

I've got a real soft spot for 180SX's. I've now had about 9 cars, including 2 180sx's, and it's my favourite by far.

at the moment a 180 is now at the top of my list, i just think it can grow into a great track car over time, and also offer some fun straight out of the box. A S13 is cheaper but it just doesnt have the right look in the rear, and part of the package is the look. I know i know, but remember im a designer, im a very visual person, yes i know it shouldnt be about looks, but hell it is to degree for me. a 180 should be a fraction slipperier (not sure if thats a real word) also. R32/33 are wicked and i still might go to that side but a 180 is looking strong. Mind you the mention of a mr2 has sparked some interest too. LOL the search goes on, and i still need to save some more $$ so im in no hurry. keep the thoughts coming, lots of great info flowing here.

Cheers all.

I had an s13 silvia track car (yes, I admit, it never actually made it to the track due to it's 10 day life) and I just wasn't happy with the look of it (it's a chick thing!) , everything else was absolutely fantastic! The engine was an SR from a s14, it was a little less torque that i would have liked (but i was coming from rb25 land) but I'm sure that can be fixed without too many dramas.

I now have a 180sx being put together with all the same bits and pieces that were on the silvia, it'll be interesting to compare the two, but I'm in love with this 180 for the looks alone!

I guess the thing with the s13s is, aswell as it being a light, and perfectly balanced car, it's been done before.. you name it, someones done it... in terms of modifications that is.. the ideal handling set up might be a little bit harder to find though.

without having driven my 180 yet, this is SOOOOOOOOOO good to hear!

yep, I still maintain 32 GTS with SR20 is the way to go, but I have to concede just buying and modifying an S13 (either type) will get you 80% of the way there, for possibly less money.

A little inspiration for you to get it to the track Liz

if i had the money, I'd do it in a second!!! Just in spite of all the RB lovers!

I believe there is a few floating around now aswell which would be nice to see!

Thanks

On an SR V RB note, Troy layed his Dyno chart over mine and interestingly made more power everywhere than me, despite having pretty much the same overall power. I found it pretty shocking actually. My manifold is leaking though, but it'll be interesting to see the difference once the engine is back.

Sorry, im still getting used to whats what, am i right in saying a s13 silvia is the same as a s13 180 as far as drive line etc, just different body?

Where are you based? Have you run your car at any race meetings? or are u doing sprints etc?

Yeah mate, exactly the same. The series is the S13, the model's are the Silvia and 180SX.

I'm in Melbourne man, and I'm doing sprints and motorkhanas with the SAU/WRX guys.

The car's off the road at the moment, but it should be back by PI at the end of the month if you're planning on coming to that.

And my wastegate isnt seating correctly so its leaking. Not bad but may make a small difference to mine. I was really surprised as well as everyone keeps telling me SR means more response then RB20. I also have a dyno of an SR20 with the exact same setup as mine but he has Step 1 cams. Again my thing makes more power and is more responsive at the same boost...though could be dynos.

So the longer my thing hangs together the more confident i am that RB20 is the way to go for cheap power. Ppl say it messes with the weight up front...but i thnk my car turns pretty well...Belsil80 has drive it. I wonder how he feels it compares to his 180SX?

The race ois on for PI and Sandown. GTSt vs 180SX :) All for shits and giggles

Was that Athids dyno by any chance? Because I've seen a TD06-20GL2 graph and it's power curve is so similar to mine it's quite odd. He had step 1 cams. Though it's possible mine may have as we've always suspected that they weren't stock, possibly NA cams.

The race is on my friend! Should be a good challenge with you, me, Matt and Ray :D

I really enjoyed your car, although it was only a short burst in it. The biggest difference imo between the SR and RB is the off boost lack of torque in the 32, which is the same as big birds car too and the old GTS-4, which in the case of a tight twisty motakhana may be a bit of a hindrance, but once the boost comes on its got some decent balls. That wouldnt even be a problem on the track. Next Deca take mine out, see what you think.

ill be there too, setting the benchmark for stock SR power. Cant wait to get back out there!

    • Ok glad you clarified on the frenchy’s options , I was worried about if my oem hoses would fit the new compressor or not if I just bought the bracket/compressor kit ,  didn’t realize they also sold a larger full conversion kit. Hmm may just go oem in that case then to make it easy only because I plan to sell this car to upgrade to a 32 GTR or 34 GTT.
    • Right, here's a video of the basic operation at least.  This is what you can expect day to day when you turn the car on and it boots from standby.  The only thing from a media point of view I haven't gotten working is for it to autoplay plexamp when it turns on from standby (it works from cold boot) but that's more of a plexamp problem as it will autoplay other music players.  Also attached is my one stray cable.  It's part of the screen's wiring adapters but there's just nowhere for it to go in my car.  I've just now done a bit of research and found a matching port on a 2010-2014 head unit with BOSE.  Mine has no BOSE so that's that case pretty much closed I think.  Plugging in the Infiniti AC panel basically did nothing for me, so that's a dead end as well.  Next port of call is to mess with this CANBUS module and see what I can find from it.  I found this resource containing the DBC files for a 2010+ G37 : https://github.com/icecube45/Dash_InfinitiG37/blob/master/InfinitiG37.dbc I'll now have something to go from when I try to extract my CANBUS data so I can see if the HVAC Mode, Fan Speed, Temperature, etc. match and also the gear shifter position.  It's a pretty big assumption that it's just mismatched CAN signals but considering all the devices in the CAN network are talking to each other (AC can be fully adjusted just with no info on screen) it might be a safe one.  I will report back WhatsApp Video 2025-02-26 at 12.49.10.mp4
    • Thanks for that Paul.  Do you think if I posted a picture you'd be able to remember where it went?
    • Sorry Duncan, I didn't get a notification for the replies.  Thanks for responding!  It's a full Android device, but does allow you to use CarPlay/AA as well.  This is the one I bought from NaviRS on AliExpress: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006368602668.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.111.59aa1802JDzQ0E - the 2K 8G-256G CAM variant but it seems to have gone up by £170 since I bought it!  My purchase was £307.14.   It's not the fastest thing in the world but performs perfectly adequately.  It stays on standby unless I disconnect the battery and let it power down, then it's just a fairly standard Android bootup time from cold.  The DSP Equaliser is very nice and made the standard stereo system sound pretty decent compared to the stock screen.  Perhaps I can take a video of it when I get a sec. It *allegedly* supports the reverse camera, but I'm yet to get that working.  It has options for reverse cam (a camera unit can be bought separately) or 360 cameras (also bought separately).  To be fair it doesn't seem to detect that the shifter was put into reverse but I'm working on a theory about this as well.  At the moment I'm going without which is a bit annoying considering the car is an absolute canal barge but so far I haven't caused any damage I'll grab a picture of the wire I'm missing later today when I can get outside.  My theory, by the by, is that not only is the head unit different, but the CANBUS network has different signals for the different years.  I think this because I have a spare AC panel from a newer Infiniti G37 (as opposed to my Nissan panel) which wouldn't control anything except the volume when I had it wired up with the stock system.  I'm going to throw it back in and see if the screen will respond to it.  I've just ordered an arduino CANBUS module so I can have a look at the signals going around the car and see if I can spot anything.  I'm thinking if I can work out what it's expecting vs what it's getting I might be able to translate and relay the signal back but so far just a theory anyway. I also found this on my travels, so far the only one that specifically matches my car: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002822934280.html?spm=a2g0s.imconversation.0.0.33433e5fgttovi If you look at the picture of the before, it has the card reader slot, and the picture of the head unit is exactly the same as the one pictured in my original post.  I asked if they sell the cables separately but sadly they won't.  I didn't want to just buy this one because it's a super old Android version and only dual core - likely slow as hell.
    • As above, you did refill the coolant and burp the system before running it again didn't you?
