we had a good one come into the blue oval dealership i work for, the owner chiped the engine and sent a piston through the head. Not being a mechanic or mechanically minded i couldn't tell you exactly what happened It sat there 6 months while the legal battle over who was going to pay for it went on :)

the guy lost as he had modded the car

Ford Aust are only new to the turbo game. Give them the chance for a little more R&D. But yeah. I bet most f**k ups are caused by the drivers.

couldn't agree more..

they think just because its a ford, its gonna last forever & not break.....

any how many of these blown engines had some mods done, then returned to stock before they are taken in?

theres nothing wrong with my wife's xr6, and she's had it for almost 2 years. i do give it a thrash every now and then too.

have you had many f6's come back? apart from clutch problems etc.

steve

I dont get why your all defending Ford for bringing out a car that breaks down. You wouldnt be defending them if it happened to you. Like he said most of them are warrenty repaires, which means they don't have any mods, otherwise they wont cover under warrenty. And those who reckon give them time for R&D...Ford should have done that before the car was released :(

mmm the diffs arnt made by ford there made by borg warner same people who make diffs for many car manufactures gearbox by btr from memeroy not ford .so all the bits apart from the engine that are breaking are actually common to a lot of cars .and if you havent seen a hole in a rb block mate you havent been looking hard enough . btw ford did do a turbo xd falcon in the 80's altho i think they may have been outsouced as a a neibour at the time brought one brand new. i think you work in a ford dealership you hate fords prob hate ya job ect ect i bet if you worked at holden /bmw/mercedes/ nissan or any other dealership you would see failures in all of them the rb has plenty of faults i think your just too one eyed to see them.and yes i do own a skyline r33 actually we have 2 my son has one as well and ive done plenty of work on them .from broken studs to siezed idler bearings to airflow meters ect ect ect . im a mechanic by trade as well and i can tell yeah there isint a brand of car that dosent have some inherent probs out there

Gearboxes don't just disintergrate and holes dont magically appear in blocks.. They're the result of something else...ie: the way they've been treated. Even with a fully engineered race car if it's driven harshly/poorly it won't last the distance.

So i'm not suprised a street car that comes stock with more than it's share of torque will melt diffs and destroy gearboxes when abused.

The turbo xd (mentioned above) was a Dick Johnson special built in limited # there were a few tubo "dealer" specials built in the 80's xd-xf but nothing from the factory.

the company went from borg warner, then to btr, then ion and now have been bought by a japanese company(they are 2km up the road from me).

all the gearboxes and diffs are designed by ford and are told wat parts to use (i know alot of ppl there). they dont design a thing these days unfortunately.

ive seen a cop xr8 that was sent back to the dealership here after 20,000kms with a blown engine aswell. knowing that they do give it a flogging but any standard car should b able to take wats limited to them (rev limiter). anything past that would b death regardless.

also my pops vy ss ute had a diff problem aswell. it shat itself n he had to wait 4 months for a new one as they had that many others waiting for diffs aswell.

Jesus. some of you seem to forget what we drive are the japanese equivalents of the cars your are talking about. Im sure when our cars were new japs complained of the same problems we have with our local cars.

Whats the point in this thread? You are a mechanic for F*R* your job is to maintain and FIX cars. Of course you will see lots of broken down cars you wouldnt be in a job otherwise!!!! Doesnt matter wether its a Ford, Toyota, Holden, Mercedes Benz, Saab, Jaguar or even a Nissan. They all have weak points and they will all at some stage fail. Its just a fact of life. If cars were as reliable as you want them to be would you have a job? would you be able to afford your Skyline?

Just some food for thought.

P.S: I am a mechanic to.If you dont like it go get a job at nissan or toyota dropping oil and filters, brakes and clutches all day

my dads mate works on the oil rigs and only drives his new ute for 3 days every 3 weeks and its had soo much shit gone wrong, diff, gearbox, tail shaft, cv joints.. its his run around car so it doesnt get smashed.. mate works for them and all i hear is broken diff's and on and on

give them a few years and they will have the bugs gone and and by then our engines would have blown so we will have rebuilds and they will still lose to us.. vicious cycle of nissans better

i'd say most of the engines that blow are do to abuse. just because it is under warranty doesn't mean shit. i know a guy that had 2 gen 3 motors replaced under warranty. he had a service done on the second motor then blew it 2 days later. holden got data off the ecu that said he had hit the limiter 13 times in 2 days, but the engine was still replaced under warranty, because if the engine can't handle reving to whatever the limiter is at the limiter should be lower.

but you say you have seen 5 turbo motors blow since their release. so 5 blown motors in 4 or 5 years, thats not too bad. i'd say that probably goes a bit better than rb being known to stand for runs bearings.

as for never seeing a rb with a hole in it, you musn't have seen any blown rb motors. i know its not quite an rb but i've seen an sr20 with a hole in number 1 and a hole in number 4, so ford isn't the only turbo manufacturer that has had blown motors.

People probably thrash their cars while they are cold, that doesn't help. I saw a guy get into his car the other day, switched the car on, gave it couple of revs and he was off, all within a few seconds. That is just asking for it.

so 5 blown motors in 4 or 5 years, thats not too bad.

This is at one shop mind you. and the very low kms ! really does stand out. I doubt very much nissan had this kind 'manufacture faults' . haha.

Great post. all these negitive remarks are from ford lovers.

We dont make all these negitive Abbreviations for FORD. for nothing

Correct me if im wrong, But Borg, for years have made diffs for other manufacturers without these problems. like Holdens. and other. They are a major Manufacturer that manufactures products for car companies based on the companys own designs, and Budget.

Has any STandard RB failed under 50,000 kms? I did a search and couldnt find 1. And ive never heard of it. Only Modded ones, and they are Few and far between.

flame on ford luvers :P:huh:

This is at one shop mind you

and other shops might not have had any come in.

Has any STandard RB failed under 50,000 kms

where were u searching? just aussie sites? unless you rang a heap of nissan dealers and mechanics in japan how can you know.

For the record i am not a ford fan (holden born and bred). but in all honesty I appreciate all cars and i cannot stand people who bag out any and every other make/model other than the car they own.

you dont see ppl complaining about a r34 gtr near new or 350z or something about a piston flying out through the side....

    • Ok glad you clarified on the frenchy’s options , I was worried about if my oem hoses would fit the new compressor or not if I just bought the bracket/compressor kit ,  didn’t realize they also sold a larger full conversion kit. Hmm may just go oem in that case then to make it easy only because I plan to sell this car to upgrade to a 32 GTR or 34 GTT.
    • Right, here's a video of the basic operation at least.  This is what you can expect day to day when you turn the car on and it boots from standby.  The only thing from a media point of view I haven't gotten working is for it to autoplay plexamp when it turns on from standby (it works from cold boot) but that's more of a plexamp problem as it will autoplay other music players.  Also attached is my one stray cable.  It's part of the screen's wiring adapters but there's just nowhere for it to go in my car.  I've just now done a bit of research and found a matching port on a 2010-2014 head unit with BOSE.  Mine has no BOSE so that's that case pretty much closed I think.  Plugging in the Infiniti AC panel basically did nothing for me, so that's a dead end as well.  Next port of call is to mess with this CANBUS module and see what I can find from it.  I found this resource containing the DBC files for a 2010+ G37 : https://github.com/icecube45/Dash_InfinitiG37/blob/master/InfinitiG37.dbc I'll now have something to go from when I try to extract my CANBUS data so I can see if the HVAC Mode, Fan Speed, Temperature, etc. match and also the gear shifter position.  It's a pretty big assumption that it's just mismatched CAN signals but considering all the devices in the CAN network are talking to each other (AC can be fully adjusted just with no info on screen) it might be a safe one.  I will report back WhatsApp Video 2025-02-26 at 12.49.10.mp4
    • Thanks for that Paul.  Do you think if I posted a picture you'd be able to remember where it went?
    • Sorry Duncan, I didn't get a notification for the replies.  Thanks for responding!  It's a full Android device, but does allow you to use CarPlay/AA as well.  This is the one I bought from NaviRS on AliExpress: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006368602668.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.111.59aa1802JDzQ0E - the 2K 8G-256G CAM variant but it seems to have gone up by £170 since I bought it!  My purchase was £307.14.   It's not the fastest thing in the world but performs perfectly adequately.  It stays on standby unless I disconnect the battery and let it power down, then it's just a fairly standard Android bootup time from cold.  The DSP Equaliser is very nice and made the standard stereo system sound pretty decent compared to the stock screen.  Perhaps I can take a video of it when I get a sec. It *allegedly* supports the reverse camera, but I'm yet to get that working.  It has options for reverse cam (a camera unit can be bought separately) or 360 cameras (also bought separately).  To be fair it doesn't seem to detect that the shifter was put into reverse but I'm working on a theory about this as well.  At the moment I'm going without which is a bit annoying considering the car is an absolute canal barge but so far I haven't caused any damage I'll grab a picture of the wire I'm missing later today when I can get outside.  My theory, by the by, is that not only is the head unit different, but the CANBUS network has different signals for the different years.  I think this because I have a spare AC panel from a newer Infiniti G37 (as opposed to my Nissan panel) which wouldn't control anything except the volume when I had it wired up with the stock system.  I'm going to throw it back in and see if the screen will respond to it.  I've just ordered an arduino CANBUS module so I can have a look at the signals going around the car and see if I can spot anything.  I'm thinking if I can work out what it's expecting vs what it's getting I might be able to translate and relay the signal back but so far just a theory anyway. I also found this on my travels, so far the only one that specifically matches my car: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002822934280.html?spm=a2g0s.imconversation.0.0.33433e5fgttovi If you look at the picture of the before, it has the card reader slot, and the picture of the head unit is exactly the same as the one pictured in my original post.  I asked if they sell the cables separately but sadly they won't.  I didn't want to just buy this one because it's a super old Android version and only dual core - likely slow as hell.
    • As above, you did refill the coolant and burp the system before running it again didn't you?
