hey all,

Never bought a car from a dealer before, always been able to buy privately.

Am looking at ads from dealers for GTS-T S2's that are around 27-28k

In real life, if I actually went down to one of these, what kind of discount do you rekon I could screw them down to? (I'm pretty good at bargaining)

just wondering what kind of rock bottom price they have before they put the sticker on the windscreen?

any ideas?

Ok, so it had nothing to do with my question then :(

I'm aware they can be had cheaper, I'm just wondering what the difference usually is between the sticker price in the car yard vs what they eventually sell for in the car yard after a bit of bargaining/negotiation.

I was using that price as an example

When i was looking around in perth (and still am to an extent) most werent prepared to start negotiating till the cash was on the table. I was looking to spend around 24K and although the places i looked at werent really willing to go down in price they were willing to install an alarm or turbo timers etc in the price.

However have you ever been to a car yard on a sunday. they often have sunday prices (ie $2000 off) "if you buy today" so i would think if your serious they could do this any day...

dude bargain hard .. don't listen to word they say .. all car salesmen are freakin dodgy as hell ... DO NOT TRUST THEM .. they want to make a sale and they will say anything ... trust me ... even if what they are saying sounds good ... don't listen to them ... get someone u can trust to inspect the car if u dont' know what u're doing ... when bargaining .. be firm ... dont' look like ur hesitating ... say to them that u saw a really good car similar to what they have there ... and then bs a price ahahahaha

hmm....don't quite agree with that, car dealers are trying to make money like anyone else, and they're the ones taking the risk by holding stock so we can all go test driving/joy riding in then.

In my experience, you should be able to get 10% off a sticker price. It is sometimes easier for them to give you this discount as a higher allowance on a trade in, extra accessories etc.

Pasey, dealers have a few thousand dollars built into their prices which they call "loading". This is over and above their profit margin (about 10%).The loading covers things like transport, handling costs etc. and warranty.There is also an amount built in which is to allow them to offer a trade in valuation above the actual wholesale value of your trade -in.So it stands to reason that if you don't trade anything in you will get a couple of grand off straight away. You should by haggling be able to get maybe another $1000 to $1500 off on top of that. Never be afraid to walk away from a salesman, and dont think that this car is the only one around. If a dealer won't drop his price by enough then keep looking. Also , play one against the other, sometimes they will cut their own throat to stop you buying elsewhere. Treat it as a game and haggling with dealers can be a bit of fun!

IMHO all dealers are dodgy.

Best thing to do is to look at the car, decide on how much you're willing to pay for it (regardless of sticker price, and of cos u need to have a good idea of what they're worth) and make an offer to the dealer. If they dont like your offer, just leave them your number and ask them to call u if they change their mind.

Buyers always have the upper hand (unless u're really looking for something rare n specific)

You dont lose by missing out on a good car, but you'll be real screwed if u end up with a dud car.

I would recommend buying a private sale Skyline, as the prices through dealers are so much more inflated that even with a few thou off they still do not represent good value for money. Some of the smaller dealers are not too bad though. Why not import? I would highly recommend www.prestigemotorsport.com.au , Geoff has to be the most honest and helpful person I have encountered in the auto industry. You can save alot of money too, and he has access to all the big auctions in JP. Geoffs email address is [email protected]

If you want to see what kind of stock he has available, he has a section on his website which shows all his previously sold cars and their prices.

My car was in a yard but on consignment tho (in yard but private seller) - wanted 25K i got it for 20K.

Ive worked at car dealerships and yes a loading does get put on the car depending what the dealerships have had to do to the car will affect the price. A car that hasnt needed much work to get up to scratch you'll probably be able to haggle them down further on because they dont have so many costs to cover in the price. Usually loading was average 1,500K. Salesreps dont really make that much on the cars themselves - its all the extras (warranty, tint etc) is where they start to make serious money. You will be able to get a lower price from a private seller than a dealership because they dont have GST factor. Plus ive seen things done to cars in dealerships that if i told u - probably wouldnt believe - because the salesreps dont own them or have to pay any costs on them - they get the absolute shit thrashed outta the cars.

if you know that dealers are more expensive then why would you bother with them?

Warranty, finance for starters. I talked my dealer down 2 grand, got an alarm, new clutch, 12 month rego, and that 3yr warranty thing. Personally, I couldn't be stuffed running around trying to get a car imported. At the end of the day, the idea that I could go to a shop, point out a car, pay money, and drive it away is kind of appealing.

When looking around for my car, I saw heaps of different types of dealers. Heaps of good cars at reasonable delaer prices too. But there was this one car that stood out above the rest, and the dealers who had it oozed professionalism. So I got it from them and have had no regrets.

Similarly with computers - there are the guys here who import their own cars... And I simply wouldn't let anyone make a computer for me. I much prefer to do it myself. Not everyone does this and they end up buying Dell, HP, etc. I reckon they're crazy but they don't want to go through the hassle of a DIY job. And in the end, I payed about 6 grand for my beast, and it whips the socks off the 17 grand machines at work. It all depends on what you're comfortable with.
