Bretto - that makes sense now mate. The vct still isn't switching the way it's hooked up, it is just always activated.

Tuitahi - Off the top of my head that sounds right to me. Also have to change one other wire, it's for the power steering. A bunch of other wires from the z32 ecu become redundant.

I do have all the pinouts, i will put it up today/tonight sometime.

exactly. like i said i dont know this sort of stuff to well so i was hoping it made sense. the only thing that we were a bit unsure about is that my battery went flat on sunday (got the car back friday night) and really the only difference that has been made since swapping the blocks is that the vct is wired into the fuse box to the ignition. any thoughts on whether that could possbly drain the battery??

i went to mercury website and there was no advertisment of re-maps,

i was previously on there site a month ago and found there pricing and everything on it but now its gone >_<

i might hit up google and find those pin-outs and have a sus

so once im finished all this will it pretty much be a rb25 ecu in the z32 casing pretty much? thats simple terms of course

One would assume that if they have tapped into an ignition switched power supply then it should not drain the battery. However it does sound a bit suss that the battery started going flat after this wiring had been done. Get someone to double check that it is not hooked up to a direct feed from the battery.

Ok so with the wiring for the z32 ecu a bunch of wires are no longer needed so don't stress about them.

Injector and ignition coil wiring. (double check, triple check, get it right)

19 and 34 need to be swapped over. (power steering switch)

R33 KNOCK SENSORS -

The easy way to do it is just hook up only one knock sensor.

If you have a cro or multimeter you can rev the engine and check which knock sensor puts out the higher signal, then connect that one to the z32 ecu. Or just use the one closest to the firewall.

AUTO TRANS?

Dunno, never tried it on an auto. Feel free to have a bash.

It does not matter if the ecu is auto or manual. The hardware is the same, only the software is different. So you can use a manual map in an auto ecu and vice versa.

What i was saying before though is i haven't seen this ecu swap done on an auto before. I'm not really sure if the z32 ecu would communicate properly with an r33 auto trans.

Oh and of course while r32 ecu's are a dime a dozen, it seems to be more tricky to find a z32 ecu for a reasonable price.

offtopic yesterday i knocked off my boost gauge T by accident and the car remained running perfect ! wtf ! i remember when i first put the engine in i did this and it died right away.. i think i have a leak else where so could my car adapt to a vac leak>?

yeh i had a think about about s2 and was wondering abit, im running s1 engine off s2 ecu atm.. hopefully il have some before and after results for everyone when this is done, im not expecting gains really just an easier way to live with rb25 interaction ahahah

I just got my RB25DET (series 2) and I was hoping you could help me with some questions.

My Skyline is non turbo so it will be a big step with the RB25.

Now then, my first question is about the gearbox mounts, I hear they aren't the same and I will also have problems with the speedo meter. What do you know about this? Can I use the Xmember of the R33 ??

The second is about the harness, everyone that has ever swapped an engine told me that the harness is the most difficult part of the swap. Do you have the diagram of the R32 and the R33 (still can't find it for the R32) and some pointers on how this is done??

    • Noted. Have noticed BMW are more 'high maintenance' for sure. They've attracted my attention as I think the used car prices seem reasonable vs other options, and the extra quality overall vs a commodore / camry / corolla or similar of the same vintage is appealing, especially the interior, and they are more on the sporty side whereas the others mentioned can be more cruising or economical A-to-B only.
    • Haha yeah I know, this is SAU after all, why are we talking about BMW's of all things!? I hear you on the 'don't have to worry about it' side of things. Having been fortunate enough to be have been able to buy a brand new motorbike or two...never really enjoyed them as much as I'd have liked as you worry so much about where you park it, will it get scratched, stolen, attempted theft, knocked over, etc...and yes dirty. Older less valuable bikes you can just go where you want and park it wherever and not really worry that much in comparison. And who cares if it gets dirty! Never owned a V8, and have had my eyes on VE / VF commodores for years but with their prices climbing so high, the M3 has come into focus more as prices are much closer than I've ever seen...is it a potential contender now?...of course need to factor in the S65 'maintenance' especially and like you said general M car 'tax'. One can dream anyway. But more on the reality front - did read the whole 330i thread as well and was a great read too, both threads enlightening as I've never even driven one of these cars! I do recall 330i didn't seem to have the same amount of issues for almost the same car (turbos and related differences notwithstanding)...perhaps down to getting it earlier in it's life so looked after better than the 335i? Perhaps so as your 130i has been good and quite similar, so finding a car that's been looked after well is the especially-crucial-BMW-first-step.

    • It's also worth noting that I am heavily and unconditionally biased. I've had a lot of cars including some GTRs a fair while ago. I love my BMW's now a lot. They make no sense a lot of the time and the guys on here remind me regularly that I could get something else that does what I want better and cheaper. If you're going to take on an older BMW it's definitely a commitment. If you bail on it early you'll lose money and also the ability for it to put a smile on your face. Stick with it and it just gets better.  f**k I should get into advertising.  
    • Careful with posts like that around here without the flame suit on @cobo_11! 😂😂 My 330i journal is on here too. That car was so good and super reliable. We still have a 130i in the family which is almost identical to the 330i and easier to find in manual. It has also been almost faultless over the 6 or so years in the family.  I used to want an M car a lot more than I do now but if I'm honest and without trying to sound like a wanker, I can get such good performance and handling out of my 335 without needing to worry about all the crap that goes along with M car ownership. I don't need to worry about my bearings or subframe issues or the cost of replacing brakes or suspension or whether it has been impeccably maintained. And I can leave it places and not get upset when it's always filthy.
