Hi all!

I was thinking about organising a Rick Bates 'Performance Driving day' and wanted to know if anyone here has been on one and/or wanted to join in on one.

Apparently Rick likes to keep the numbers between 4-5 and during the week seems to be the time to go (track always busy on weekends?).

I know people always like to know dates before joining in on something, but at this stage I am just trying to get some feedback on interest and anyone who has done driver training before. Is there someone better? Cheaper? Rick charges about $285 per person (based on 4 people) for a full day. Wakefield licence and helmet is extra I think.

Cheers

Donnan

Unless I'm reading it wrong, it it looks like he holds them on the open practice days?

so you wouldnt have the track to yourself, there'd also be anyone else who wanted to turn up also.

i'm just going by this:

When Are Courses Held?

The courses need to be held generally on a weekday and an open track day. Click here to find out when Wakefield has open track days.

H guys,

I hope you don't mind me jumping in here but as member and reader I noticed your looking for some information on advanced driving courses.

I run Fifth Gear Motorsports here in Canberrs and hold advanced courses at Wakefield on a needs basis and thought you might like some additional info.

I run the course on weekdays (speed off the street days)at a cost of $250 per person, this includes your annual track license to use again and the track for the day, so there are no other cost besides lunch and fuel.

You would need a group of 5 people to run a day, if you are running short on numbers I can sometimes fill them with other interested people.(they may not drive a skyline though?)

For more course details you can visit our web site www.fifthgear.com.au and check out Advanced courses

I will include some dates that are available in March for you.

March 7, 8, 14, 16, 21 & 22

If you have any further questioned then please ask.

Thanks

Is it only 1300 to hire out the track for a weekday??

Hmmm.....*ponders*

That was last time I enquired a while ago, I've heard it may be a little more these days for solo operators.

But.. having a look at dereks offer, it's cheaper, it's the whole track and he knows how to handle a GTR (owning one really helps)

I think my GF may just have purchased a day for me (here's hoping)

Sheez, I'm sure I could get it cheaper than that, inflation....

Witches Hats $2.20 each per day

Just makes Dereks offer all that better

O.K boys,

Dereck agian from Fifth Gear Motorsports, I have confirmed a date for an Advanced Driving Course at Wakefield park for those that are interested. it will be on the 22/3/07. only 5 spots available.

For more info and/or booking forms visit www.fifthgear.com.au/defensive.html

We are also running a Defensive course on the 10/3/07 which is a great lead into the advanced course, and yes you do get skid pan time as well in the Defensive course!

If you have any questions then please ask. PH: 0432 980 715

Thanks

Dereck

Sorry, the Advanced course for the 22nd March has filled up, so a second date has been set for the following week Thursday 29/3.

We are also running a special for those that want to do the Defensive course as well on the 10/3 for a cost of $420 for both courses, a saving of $55.

Again, any questions please phone me on 0423 980 715 or visit www.fifthgear.com.au

  • 2 weeks later...

Sorry for the super late notice, but i am wondering if there is anyone who may be still interested in a track day? Sorry Dereck, i am not actually organising this track day just atteding (is a present).

Details:

14/03/07 (next wednesday!)

8:30am-5:00pm

$300pp based on 4 people (gets slightly cheaper with more)

Ricks fee, your wakefield licence and helmet are all covered; all you need to do is show up with a car and a full tank of fuel.

Again, sorry about the late notice but two people dropped out and we would like to fill their spots if possible.

I will be out at the museum tonight and at wheels on sunday, so anyone interested can talk to me then or call my mobile (0416 051 224) if needed.

Thanks

Donnan

Wow! What a day!

Anyone who has not been on a track day is crazy. I always knew it would be fun, but it was freakin' awesome.

Having an instructor in the car was fantastic because they actually show you how to drive your car properly and it makes a huge difference to how the car handles and how much faster you can actually go.

To those who asked previously, yes it was an open track day which meant 15min on, 30min off. As this was my first time, it suited me perfectly. After 15min, I really needed a drink, some snacks, a pit stop and time to fiddle with the car and let it cool down. I was really lucky that i did not have any troubles with my car (apart from making a quick fuel run, not to self: take extra fuel next time), others had a few dramas like chewing through two sets of rear tyres, severe brakes fade (poor guy bled them twice and it still didn't really help), leaking radiator hoses and a dead engine; just the normal kind of stuff for a track day i guess?

I just had my 100k service done the week before and the tyres are pretty new (not anymore!) so the car drove fantastically. After seeing what others were going through i can see that i saved myself alot of bs by taking care of the car.

Before the next time i go out the car will be treated to another service and everything double checked again especially:

1-OIL

2-OIL

3-OIL

4-WATER

5-BRAKES

My times weren't anything great, but i am happy with my first outing and already have a list of suspension mods that i want to do. This has made me even more keen to do another driving day, but with someone else (dreck i am looking in your direction) to get another point of view. Will not be for a while, have to let the bank balance recover first!

Times in last session (very rough, mate with phone stop watch in pit lane)

A couple of 1.23s

Mostly 1.22s

Even got a 1.20 someting

See you on the track

    • It still combines inches with mm, especially when you have .5 inches involved, and mm and inches that can go in either direction. This would give a clear idea on both sides of the rim, right away, with no arithmetic. Even better if somebody gives you the dimensions of the arch of multiple cars. i.e GTR may be 125mm, a A80 Supra may be 117mm, or something along those lines. Yes, you can 'know' that going from a 10in rim to a 10.5in rim with the same offset moves both sides about 6mm, but you still have to 'know' that and do the math. Often it's combined. People are going from 9.5 +27 to 10.5 +15. You may do the math to know it, but if it was going from (I had to go look it up to be sure) 241mm/2 - 27 - 93.5mm from the center line to (more math) 266/2 - 15 (118mm) from the center line. Versus 93mm vs 118mm. It's right there. If you know you have a GTT with 100mm guards you can see right away that one is close to flush and the other absolutely won't work. And when someone says "Oh the GTR is 120mm" suddenly you see that the 10.5 +15 is about perfect. (or you go and buy rims with approximately 118mm outward guard space) I think it's safe to say that given one of the most common questions in all modified cars is "How do offsets work" and "How do I know if wheels will fit on my car" that this would be much simpler... Of course, nothing will really change and nobody is going to remanufacture wheels and ditch inches and offset based on this conversation :p We'll all go "18x9+30 will line up pretty close to the guards for a R34 GTT (84mm)" but 'pretty close' is still not really defined (it is now!) and if you really care you still have go measure. Yes it depends on camber and height and dynamic movement, but so do all wheels no matter what you measure it for.
    • But offsets are simple numbers. 8" wheel? Call it 200mm, near enough. +35 offset? OK, so that means the hub face is that far out from the wheel centreline. Which is 2s of mental arithmetic to get to 65mm to outer edge and 135mm to inner. It's hardly any more effort for any other wheel width or offset. As I said, I just close my eyes and can see a picture of the wheel when given the width and offset. That wouldn't help me trust that a marginal fitment would actually go in and clear everything, any more than the supposedly simple numbers you're talking about. I dunno. Maybe I just automatically do numbers.
    • Sure! But you at least have simple numbers instead of 8.5 inches +/mm, relative to your current rims you do maths with as well, and/or compare with OEM diameter, which you also need to know/research/confirm..
