There is no tolerance far as i know however. If it's 0.5dB over, you are over and will fail. As the EPA people "tell" you, thier meters are perfectly calibrated.

I know for a fact they are not (having gone to two testers and had a variance of 2dB), but thats just how it goes really.

I failed at 92db with a stock cat back exhaust. Front pipe was aftermarket. Went back with new rear muffler and it was 84db.

Just a heads up if going for a noise test.

What the guy at the exhaust place told me (they do epa tests too) is to run your car for at least 5 mins to get the cat converter hot. He reckons when it's hot it is about 2db quieter.

Wouldn't be the first time a car has failed in that exact scenario Russ - same happens for GTR's with aftermarket from pipes & factory cat-back.

Simply cannot get them to pass.

I'm guessing you went back there with a super-poo-shooter rear muffler?

pretty much. Just wanted the quietest cheapest muffler they had. cost me $140 and used it for all of 10 mins...

If I'd known about the cat temp thing it may have just passed and saved me 140. Although I wasn't going to tow it all the way down there to find that he'll fail me again for 90.1 db.

Hey guys, about to do some work to my car and im wondering if what im about to do is going to cause me much issues.... i know the car does regardless and the 2 times ive been pulld over they go straight to the turbo and start looking in my passanger seat/door trim for things.. im guessing a boost controller...

Anyways if yas can just make some suggestions or if you think i will be fairly good with what im going to do let me know (peace of mind :P ), from what i can tell i should be ok.

Also whats the deal if i have to goto the epa or something? can my tuner tune the engine to run fine or is it just a matter of put the stock parts back on :S?

im new to the skyline/performance scene so yeah any help is appreciated. thanks!

also im in melb vic.

R34 GT-T 1998 White.. Manual Coupe - Daily to and from work driver/Weekend cruiser.

Currently: Stock as a rock (side skirts/Turbo timer)

Pulled over: Twice... car was checked over thoroughly both times... number plate noted the first time.

About to put in:

Bosch 040 Fuel pump

Sports Panel Filter

Turbosmart boost tee bleeder (will ask installer to hide it best as can)

Stealth FMIC cooler kit (contact has provided the cooler as he suggests is best for my car and is completely legal/no cutting etc)

Splitfire Coilpacks

Dump/Higher flow cat/Custom made twin rear with large twin stainless tip - High ride to give it the best stock look.

General service with platnum spark plugs

Nistune Chip

Exedy HD Clutch

Two issues...

1. The boost controller in that list you have.

That is easy to hide, or even remove for the sake of going down to the EPA. Would take 10mins if that...

You could also get an upgraded actuator as another idea. So permanently run 10psi, and then don't even have to worry about a bleed valve being there. No chance you'll get pinned for a aftermarket actuator, virtually impossible to tell something like that. Just rub some oil/dirt onto it before you install it if you are really worried. ;)

2. Exhaust. No way with one muffler it'll be legal. At a stab i'd say around 93-96dB, you'll need another muffler after the CAT (before the diff) to get the noise down to legal.

Everything else will be ok.

Awesome thanks for the help people!

Im happy with my boost tee but thanks for the acuator tip (i have nfi what it is ;)) so yeah ill ask the installer to hide it and paint it black

Yeah the exhaust i think will be the hardest part its also 3" so im guessing when i have to get it tested ill put the stock one back on.

Should be coverd then im guessing...?

thanks for the reply guys :)

was talking to a guy who ran an exhaust shop, he claims that a car only needs to follow sound restrictions according to the year they were released. So while recent cars must be under 90db, if the car was released during the 95db limit, that's all that's required.

any truth to this?

Totally depends on the year of being made.

As you said Alex - pre 1983 cars have different rules, there are also cars that do not require CAT convertors and so on due to age etc etc.

HOWEVER should you put say a RB26 into a Datto 180b - you would need to comply with the MOTOR's emission requirements, not the cars.

It's very much subjective to the situation - if you can provide more detailed info we could help futher :)

yeah the GF's 1973 1200 had to get a test, went in with one muffler and reading 110db, bolted on another one and it went under the 96db limit woot! It's loud again now lol

I know that most people around here who have the later model Datsuns have to comply with the stricter noise and pollutions ADRs pretty sure the cutoff was around 1983

    • Convert to dual filament bulb   FWIW, it will look odd - I dare say a bit dumb as it looks like your flasher relay has shit the bed.
    • If the RB20 box in the car is a push clutch, then yes, you will need to deal with the pull clutch on the turbo box. You either buy a pull clutch and don't use the old one, or you do the things needed to convert the turbo box's clutch arrangement over to push. Which is a bit of a f**karound. "Making" a custom tailshaft is the easy part. But you will need to source the front clip yoke - the bit that goes into the output of the gearbox. These are not as easy to find. They are out there, but they don't grow on trees the way that they used to.
    • Indicator bulbs are way too bright to use as a "corner marker" (we call them parking lights too). Sure. Go ahead and do it. But realise that you wil need to come up with all your own wiring to do it, as no-one will have a standard howto worked out for Skylines. It's just a matter of abandoning everything that Nissan have done and starting from scratch. You'd probably be better off retrofitting tailght/brakelight globe bases into the front indicator housings and using the taillight circuit for your corner marker and the brake light as the indicator. You'd need to work out how to kill the marker circuit while the indicator is flashing, otherwise it won't flash on-off, just bright-less bright.
    • Hi. A little bit of an update. It maybe(hope not) looks like i would need a new tranny(it would be "maybe" a cheaper or better option anyway) So i need some info. I know i need a different propshaft(i can make custom one) LSD is not a problem cuz the engine will be still(for now) N/A RB20. So if i buy RB25DET NEO tranny...is there something else i need? I read something about push/pull type but i do not know if i need to "change" something or i can just plug n play onto my engine a go? Thanks for the advice
    • Good morning all, Bit of a random question but figured I’d finally throw it out after wondering for a long while. Before I start, I'm hoping to do this purely out of personal preference. I think it would look better at night, and don't mind at all spending a few hours and dollars to get it done. I've copied this from a non-Skyline specific forum, so I apologize for the explanation of our headlight switch setup that we all know. Here we go: Zero lights (switch off) Parking lights (switch position 1) being a rectangular marker on the outside of the housing, my low beam being the projector in the centre (position 2), and a high beam triggered by my turn signal stalk. Most North American cars I’ve owned of this era have power to the amber corner (turning indicator) light as part of the first switch (parking lights). I’d love to have these amber corners receive power when the headlights and parking lights are on (headlight switch), yet still blink when using the turn signal which is of course a separate switch. Hopefully I’ve explained my question correctly. Is anyone aware of a way in which I might be able to achieve this? Thanks in advance
