rb26 instalition

i've just finished the conversion ur thinking of , and OMFG there are virtually nil swap over and wait till u get to the mangement section. but there i a very bright light at the end of the tunnel, if u got time a tatience then do it as a the amount of little odds bits that have to be done, it would cost a fortune or they would quickly bodge it.

I personally wouldn't bother with the RB26DETT Conversion.

I would mod the RB25 up to 300rwkw if that still wasn't enough then by then you need to start toughening up the internals so i would look at slapping a 3ltr bottom end and rebuilding that instead of the rb25.

i've just done the rb26 conversion but was running the autronic smc computer management system prior and found it quite easy.there was a slight mod to be done to the cross member, pulley to be pressed 5mm of the power steering pump to match 26 front pulley'and re-piping intercooling.radiator, throttle cabel, thrust bearing and gearbox all fit no problems.well worth the effort.i hope this helps.

when the rb25 came out it had 320hp with a small turbo the rb26 has a large turbo that is laggy till 4000rpm and then turns the tyres hard until the rev limiter kicks at 9000.its wild but blew third gear in the box on second test drive at 500hp and 19psi on bp ultimate.its the best thing i've done

2GU UP, depends on what you want the car for, if you drive it regulary just change the turbo and do teh usual stuff (cooler, exhaust etc) and you will make a easy 220rwkw. If you want more then you have to start decidng if it is worth changine the engine, but the costs will be much larger than doing a few simple mods.

I was fiddling around with a turbo calc last night and it appeard that what really hinders the RB30DET is the lack of rev's compared to a RB26. The RB26 will rev to 9000rpm where as the max the RB30DET can rev to is 7000rpm - 7500rpm due to harmonics.

Basically the RB26DET was better for all out power in the turbo calc.

However it isn't always about all out power.. No good boost coming in at 3/4 of the rev range for a street car.

    • I don't know it is due to that. It could just be due to load on track being more than a dyno. But it would be nice to rule it out. We're talking a fraction of a second of pulling ~1 degree of timing. So it's not a lot, but I'd rather it be 0... Thicker oil isn't really a "bandaid" if it's oil that is going to run at 125C, is it? It will be thicker at 100 and thus at 125, where the 40 weight may not be as thick as one may like for that use. I already have a big pump that has been ported. They (They in this instance being the guy that built my heads) port them so they flow more at lower RPM but have a bypass spring that I believe is ~70psi. I have seen 70psi of oil pressure up top in the past, before I knew I had this leak. I have a 25 row oil cooler that takes up all the space in the driver side guard. It is interesting that GM themselves recommend 0-30 oil for their Vette applications. Unless you take it to the track where the official word is to put 20-50w oil in there, then take that back out after your track day is done and return to 0-30.
    • Nice, looks great. Nice work getting the factory parts also. Never know when you'll need them.
    • Thanks @jtha7 I will have a look around tomorrow but it is a prick of a spot. These are some photos i tried taking
    • I take it that the knock retard is from bearings tapping a little tune? Thicker oil is a fragile bandaid. You need a much bigger oil cooler and probably the bigger pump being discussed.
    • Hi @Chupapy i had several leaks from coolant pipes being corroded, i also had one leak on back of the head onto transmission. For me that leak was from the turbo water line. Follow the line to the back of the head The hose and metal pipe had perished these are the best pics I took of it at the time
