the police have every right to physically defect vehicles on the spot unless it is in a private area.... and if they really want to get you & if they are able to identify your vehicle by the number plates, you will most likely be receiving a letter requesting for an inspection.

from the pix i have seen from this BBT night event, it was an open area, and looks like everyone can just walk in to admir/laugh at the cars... so what makes it different for the cops to walk in and having a power trip?

during my auto salon competing days, i have seen cops walking inside the auto salon show arenas/halls/exhibition centres taking down number plates and defect cars (during the weekend, while competing/showing), as well as pulling cars over defecting when they have lfet the show on sunday evening/night.

think u found urself a new occupation - go be a cop. thanks for the support!

Can someone shed some light on why these items are deemed un-roadworthy? I presume that there is some logic behind every regulation.

Blow Off Valves = Noise Pollution (No Problems)

Gauges mounted on your dash = May block your vision (No Problems)

Loud Exhausts = Noise Pollution (No Problems)

EPA = Pollution (No Problems)

but ...

Size of tyres compared to factory spec? So your car has better road handling is a bad thing?

Ride height?

Upgraded Suspension? So again better handling is a bad thing?

Roll Cages?

Aftermarket Steering wheels?

1. bigger isn't always better.

2. Similar to point number 3

3. 'upgrading' to stiff ass coil overs that may bottom out over bumps and cause the car to lose control...things like coil overs might be good on a nice smooth race track, but not so much so on an Australian road..\

4. No idea why they aren't legal, but I'm sure someone will have a sensible answer

5. Can't go from airbag to non airbag, but if its an older car without an airbag, the wheel has to be a certain diameter, and have a padded centre, then I'm pretty sure thats legal :P

LOL hey ppl i think my car will stay in the garage for some time.... Dont know what happened but when i returned to my car there were officers putting a defect sticker on it. I got my car towed away since i didnt want to drive a defected vehicle on public roads :P the vented bonnet may have been a danger to pedestrians.... Its funny how the media turned it around and made it look like my car was confiscated...

There seems to be a great deal of missing the point going on here.

It's not a matter of giving out defects to defectable cars...

We all know what we can and can't do - what's roadworthy and what isn't, and all know this is a risk taken by ALL motorists if your car isn't up to scratch. Its one of the reasons I'm pretty happy to be a member of 'team stock' at the moment.

The issue here is the 'raid' (for want of a better word) on a legitimate, legal, organised event where people displayed their cars, in good faith, for the benefit of the community to enjoy - was very much NOT, as Chinny so perfectly described, within the spirit of the game.

This - and the other instances of similar behaviour at Sandown etc - is VERY bad form from Victoria Police. It certainly doesn't do anything to encourage running these kinds of events - and if anything, will serve only to further drive things underground.

Nice way to build a bridge Vic Pol.

Roll cages can be legal. They just have to compy with the states requirements. They may differ slightly from state to state...bur generally the legality depends on not impacting ingress/egress of the vehicle. Clearance from the driver and passengers head. Padding of the cage in required spots. Functioning of sun visors, door handles/locks and windows etc.

Does anyone know what the Yanks vehicle modification regulations are?

Curious to know what their rules are like...

I am pretty sure I have seen cars so low they are almost scraping the ground.

Incredibly small or oversized tyres.

I know they have much more expensive speeding fines .. which is fair enough

SS8 Gohan I posted my thoughts about the whole situation at BBT in the events section. Again I will say what happened will do alot more harm than good. I have personally turned up to various club cruises and could have NOU, fined, EPA almost ever car there but what would that do..It would make these clubs not notify police of cruises and cause the situation to get worse.

Gauges mounted on your dash are prefectly legal providing they are no higher then the STD steering wheel in your car.

Unless your dumb enough to mount a monster 8inch tacho right on top of your dash then your pretty much right to mount boost guages and alike anywhere you want on the dash.

you know why?

Because those people are leaving with cars 30mm off the ground, no exhaust etc etc

They DESERVE to be pinned.

The cops have never been "waiting" en masse for Salon to finish.

They just hit the morons who either

a) drive out with beyond illegal cars

b) drive out sideways

I've never been defected/hassled/whatever leaving AutoSalon in nearly 5 years.

And i cant tell you one person i know that has been either, and ive come to know more than one or two people that attend AutoSalon over the years

      As GTS mentioned, it takes a bit of faffing, some fiddling and a little modifying.  With the strainers, you can buy different styles. Some sit flat on the pump, some angle down.  Here are some photos of mine, ignore the ugly welds lol.

      The smart thing is to actually locate the pump at the right point down the hanger, so that the strainer can stay sticking out at a right angle, but near the bottom. This is the perpetual hassle with retrofitting any different pump to the factory hanger. Some just go where you need it to, some need fiddling and faffing, and modifying of stuff.

      Some updates. After a lot of praying and some inspecting of crank threads, we've found that they were both kinda munted but nothing seemed terminal. The other option was drilling and helicoiling the crank. That is obviously the last option so we decided to at least try to get a OEM GM bolt in to GM Specs. So after honing/linishing the balancer from it's .002" interference fit to a .0018" to .0015" to .0013" it eventually slotted on to the crank. ATI state the interference is nominally 0.0007-0.0009... so it's still snugger than ATI reckon and explains the issues we had to fit the thing to begin with. New GM bolt went in at 37 ft/lb then torqued 140 degrees after which was EXTREMELY   but it tightened up to 140 degrees and it was a lot of force. So all things considered, the balancer is secured to the exact specs that GM want with the OEM Stretch bolt, (that ATI say you can use..) and the balancer itself is seated and snug AF. So WOO. Engine is now back in the car with lots of swearing. Bellhousing bolts done up, driver side manifold is on, AC Compressor and hard lines are back on the car. Next step will be to connect various engine bits/wiring/intake/radiator etc. Then oil and coolant and ... test start it? And of course, looking into this issue... which actually doesn't look so bad - It looks like it can be twisted back into shape with a set of multigrips. Anyone wanna buy my bonnet? Boy it looks good over there and sunk cost sucks.

      Also this may be a stupid question, but how would you recommend getting the strainer on a downwards angle ? as they tend to obviously clip to the bottom of the pump which usually sits level 🥴
