Its finally in ....my brand new! r34 turbo is on my car.

And it only took me two whole days!! I was expecting it to take

3 hours...........

Yes everything bolts right up except the r32 outlet pipe is too small for the r34 turbo outlet (this would have come with it if it was used!), but after picking up a vg30 outlet and some piping

from the wreckers was all sorted out :)

Its a great upgrade, the car now doesnt drop off boost like it did before at just below 6000, now holds boost all the way to the redline.

Its got slightly more lag, maybe 500 rpm later, but then it goes much much harder :burnout:

And im only at 9psi (playing safe for now), so there heaps more to go

Now just need an intercooler and a remap....

With sourcing the turbo...i was lucky i got it of a fellow skyline owner who brought it back from japan and didnt need it anymore

i paid $850 :)

I was just going to get a used r33 turbo until i saw this one for sale...i think there isnt too much difference between r33 and r34 turbos maybe someone else will know the turbo part numbers are;

rb20 - 16V

r33 rb25 - 45V4

r34 rb25 - 45V1

Reason i didnt go for bigger turbo, is dont want to get into bigger injectors, aftermarket computer $$$ etc etc and didnt want lag.

Advice:

- Stock r34 wastegate actuator boost setting is 6-7 psi, so you need a boost controller or you will be disappointed

- r33/r34 turbos get actuator signal from manifold (not compressor

snail as in r32), i just teed of the carbon canister line as this was

close to my boost controller

- use a hoist if you can, so much easier to get to oil and water drain lines

Thats it nissky.. :)

I've had a VG30BB turbo on my RB20DET.

Don't do it... The standard turbo hits much harder and a lot quicker for the street.

I was making full boost with full throttle in 3rd gear loading it up at around 3700-4000rpm. In second gear just powering on as you do it would hit full boost at 4100rpm.

First gear felt like it was basically a non-turbo car.

Up top it didn't even really pull that much harder than the standard turbo and due to the VG30BB's age it still dropped off boost up top.

Seriously the VG30BB Turbo I was very dissapointed.

Depends how you drive.

If you use it for the track then sure don't go over 12-13psi but if you are only using it for the street and only having short bursts not constant hammering it will be ok.

For example my standard R32 Turbo.. I've been running 16psi through it for over a year now. The car has done 60,000km's since I bought it.

Personally A lot of people speak from what they have heard, but I have only ever heard of a R34 Turbo dying on a RB25 running 1 bar of boost and doing several laps around a track flat stick.

Speed kills a turbo as quick as heat does however PSI doesn't kill it as quick.

Hi Guys, I have seen only 2 X R34 GTT turbos, both had ceramic turbines and plastic compressor wheels. They were not made by Garrett either, they were the same design (so Nissan must own that) but made by someone else, IHI maybe.

Turbo bits were interchangeable with R33 GTST ones and GCG did the usual hi flow and the result was the same.

Hope that adds to the knowledge base.

sydney kid when ya say the result was the same.

SAME as what ???

and joel yer right on when ya run 1 bar for street it doesnt damage anything i do it too and my liner doesnt even break a sweat and thats with stock cooler dude from advan (silver 32 ) runs 1.2bar with fmic

Hey Doc,

When you say you were leaning out, were you still running

the stock fuel pump??

Mine was leaning out on the stock pump with stock turbo, i upgraded to gtr pump last year so i should be ok.

I think its time to put my dodgy fuel pressure gauge on again...:uh-huh:

  • 4 weeks later...

hey just reading this post and its interesting........ what are the increases a rb25 series II turbo will give on a rb20det @ same psi (kw@wheels) and also i was thinking of getting a 3" dump pipe as well...... the rest of my exaust is 3" (cept dump) so with the rb25 turbo and 3" dump what would my kw@wheels increase by on the same boost? also would driveability be increased?

It will increase lag slightly so you will have less bottom end. If you have an Auto that is bad.. If your running a manual then all is ok.

A dump pipe will make the car feel like its got more torque when making small amounts of boost i.e driving normally.

Generally a R33+ Turbo at the same boost pressure as a R32 turbo should make an extra 15rwkw.

How laggy will a hks 2530 be? And how are you defining lag? What i thought was lag was, where it would normally take boost, and you mash your foot... how long it takes to pick up boost, not at what rpm it starts to make boost? Could be wrong tho.. Im also looking for a new turbo for an RB20. Would the 2530 be a much better choice then say a R33 hi flowed? They would have around about the same price, what power outputs with aftermarket ecu, a good front mount + bigger injectors/fuel pump and and good 3inch exhaust and seperate dump pipe? I know thats a heap of questions but im just trying to work out a budget and whats worth spending money on :(. Im aiming for 220-240rwkw. With that power in a 1200kg car what times would i get aswell? :D

    • Nope, still smaller rear, put on the 4inch exhaust and picked up power everywhere, ended up just shy of 800rwhp.   Didn't seem to be hitting any walls either, so perhaps could have pushed for more but all maybes and the fish that got away etc etc.
    • Races cars don't care for VIN either...
    • This could be sold and shipped to the US for many gold pieces. RMS has no say in that. Ask various Western Sydney inhabitants how it works.
    • Ha ha ha, mine loves to spend, all on the dogs (they're our kids, and her spending would likely rival that of some people raising children!) the only benefit is, her spending is tax deductible as she runs a business in the dog industry 😛 The above all means she can spend race car budget quicker than I can. 😛 That and a lot of the things I want are very expensive, and I can be a bit "you want how much for that?!" And at other times overly impulsive. Or I start the w days of research, get to day 1.5 and get really annoyed that no one will advertise actual specifics and it's just marketting BS and I go "well, now I don't want anything to do with that now!" Also I hate paying lots of money for something I can make from $50 in materials. Then I get the shits halfway through making things and wonder why others who just buy parts have more fun... 😛
    • Their 240Z with the RB26 would be a real nice thing to have in a garage to come out for an occasional weekend cruise It's such a cool thing in so many ways Sadly, we have a blue 240Z shell that I walk past every day, just sitting outside a shed at work, it has been slowly disintegrating and falling apart into the ground for the last few years, the owner cannot be found, and I am unable to "claim it" I've been told by work and the RMS, the rust in the body is excessive though, and it has had most of the salvageable stuff, like panels, trim and switch gear stripped off it over the last year or two, work keeps threatening to put it in one of our metal scrap bins, I wish they did though, as it makes Mark sad walking past it
