Hub Ring/spacers

I think you'll find studs snap because they are regularly overtorqued, not because they can't hold a wheel on.

The hub rings are there so you can centre the wheel properly, the studs then hold the wheel in the right place. With no hub rings you might get it centred (easier with tapered wheel nuts) or yuo might not

well the spacer sits (or bolts) onto the hub to push the wheel further out - can be dangerous due to shorter studs (not enough thread in wheel nuts) and maybe from wider track wearing out bearings, rod ends etc. Don't know about legality in different states although "apparently" bolt on spacers are legal in NSW.

Hub rings surely are just a saftey item
