Annual Sau Dyno Day Pictures/video And Discussion

You all know that my 31 kicked all your arses...

Even I'm going to complain that the dyno read low. 70rwkw..., the engine's not that stuffed.... or maybe it is  Had to laugh when they had to jump start it to get it on the dyno... Time for a new battery

I had some fun though and it was definitely well organised by the SAU team :P

Ok, pardon my ignorance here I aint emo about the bionic wheelchair output but, whats alll this talk about uncalibrated dynos etc. If this dyno was bought to spec about a week or so back why all the f**king around to recalibrate it. These are not gripes, I simply want to know which way is up regarding the wide cross range of readings coming from the dyno.

Noel, this was some mis-information that started to circulate on the day. I may have been a part of that as I didn't understand the jargon. I was told afterwards that the dyno was calibrated after being moved some 8 days ago. This is done by the manufacturer and is spot on. The first five cars on the dyno had what the owners thought were low readings. Turned out they were accurate, just that some needed some TLC to go fast!

My car went on second last and put out a figure that I expected due to a clogged fuel rail/injectors. The Dyno Logic is always going to read lower figures than a Dyno Dynamic in "shootout" mode. I dislike the shootout mode as it inflates figures. My experience is that my car which runs consistent 206rwkw on Allstar's dyno, gets a figure of 237rwkw on another dyno running shootout mode. It all depends on where you get your car tuned. I am extremely happy with the work Allstar does on my car and sticking with the one dyno ensures consistency.

Thanx Dave. As i said, my reading was about where it was supposed to be so no gripes here. What i dont understand are those havin a cow about the lack of service. Like..WTF. the allstar crew worked their freakin arses off from go to whoa. I know if I were one of them I would be totally pissed if anyone shitcanned the effort of the day. No they are not my tuning shop but if I ever decide to change I will most definitely be giving them a call.

Like wise shane. Our 30dets can go head to head! An epic battle.

that'd would be good to see

:P daz!!!!! i just remembered about that post u were talking about, sorry dude, but u shoulda said u were daz! :P

In the mean time;

21. Could not get it up :P

You're all funny

The bitch's loved my rice rocket down Cavell Ave, so boo to all you dyno runnah's!

*crys* in a drak room cutting myself and writting lyrics over not being able to get it up

I agree with Dave in that using one Dyno for consistency is important..how ever if you want to compare your car to other people in other states ect getting a Dyno run in shoot out mode probably levels the field a little and is a more comparable result as shoot out figures are probably what 90% of people are quoting

Hey Noel,

I guess when you run an event with more than 150 people turning up and over 70 skylines out in the street. Your always gonna have one or two people complain about something. I dont mind, Id rather they air their thoughts rather than bottle them up and not say anything. As this helps plan bigger and better events next time.

I think over all 99% of the people who attended had fun and enjoyed the day. As I only had 3 complaints and all related to the dynos readings.

As for the figures, Ive decided not to get into the figures battle. The explaination I have to offer may only cause more confusion. Cause after all the idea of using Richard again was to compair last years figures to this years. Hence using the same dyno. So to me it was more about checking how far we have come and what improvements we have all made.

When you stick 35 cars on a dyno, it may not give eveyone the figure they thought they had. But it does show car for car where you sit in the pecking order of power. That R32 4 door with RB26dett and my car just kept spinning the wheels and never put down a perfect run. My 5th gear run in the afternoon gave a result of 301rwkw, now 5th gear has a lower ratio. So using maths I actually scored around 340-345rwkw if it were a 4th gear run and it still spun the wheels and still didnt get to redline before it broke traction. So I am personally keen to run a dyno dynamics in shoot out just to get a clear no wheel spin run at 19psi to see if the 350rwkw barrier can be cracked...

I have rubber all up my guards from the tyres spinning on the rollers.

Food for thought tho, if a workshop was to bump the figures up on their dyno. This would have 2 affects.

1. Customers who dont know much about cars would return to said workshop for more work in the future as the figures they get given are very very good. Hence that person will think they are doing a super job and continue to return.

2. A dyno that reads high will have every man and his dog getting a print out for bragging rights.

Again, every dyno will read different as I proved last dyno day when my car hit 3 dynos in one day and have a varience from 178rwkw all the way to 223rwkw on the same day on the same tank of fuel same boost and similar air temps... Once again, we used Richard as in the past we have used his dyno for a benchmark. As any mechanic will tell you the dyno does not have to be accurate at all to do its job. You jump on the dyno and get a base line run then you go away and work on the car and then come back and see the difference and measure the improvement this way.

Last of all yes Dave this is true. The dyno was serviced and calibrated 9 days ago now and was made spot on the money. As for the first 5 cars reading low, this was due to the wrong software being loaded. Dyno logic gave them updated software and Dan loaded the old stuff with the new calbiration. So the first couple of cars got a second run due to this fact.

Im not sticking up for Richard here, Im simply stating that a dyno is for testing improvements they are not perfect for overall dyno figures. If you want an absolute perfect reading id suggest going to GT Auto as they have a hub dyno made for 1000kw vechicles and have no chance of wheel spin. These units are considered to be the most accurate on the market. But we could not use it for a dyno day as you need to take the wheels off and bolt up the hubs. Which with even 10 cars it would be hard to do in one day.

To be honest, I only saw 2 cars figures that I thought were low in my mind. But factors like bad batch of fuel or hot intake temps due to heat soak or even a slipping clutch could cause low read outs...

Thank you all for reading this far, if you have any questions about "ramping" or "Motec correction" Id be happy to answer your dyno questions. As I went through a huge dyno education last year before the MAY dyno day so I could understand more about how they work and what settings do what... I dont call myself a dyno expert but I can say I do know a far bit about them and would be happy to ease some querys.

Hey Noel,

I think they overinflated your readout Col. My seat of the pants dyno reckons that yellow submarine of yours was only good for bout 78rwkw.:P:P

On a more serious note, could some explain to the difference between "shootout mode" and other . cheers.

was the dyno showing at the wheels kws? I know nothing about a dyno machine and how they work. Also interested to know how this dyno would compare to a awd dyno? As in some of the skylines that are 4wd, on a 2 wheel drive dyno would they show more kws using only the rear wheels?

Edited by I8U

I ordered myself a walbro fuel pump so ill b back at allstar after it has been fitted to see if my fuel problem is sorted so i might still get to run on the drag on the 17th. Very dissapointed with my 147rwkw but ill do way better after the pump is in.

Yes, its kw's at the rear wheels...

As for AWD Dynos, the GTRs running 4wd mode would achieve a low all wheel KW figure over a rwkw figure.

Do to loss in heat via friction in the transfer case/half shafts/hubs/extra 2 wheels...

IE> Ians GTR ran 208rwkw, in AWD he would probablly achieve 170-175kw at all 4 wheels...

That answers my question thanks for your help :P sorry I missed the day. Sounds like you guys had alot of fun

In that case, the 5 cars concerned should have their money refunded (if they didn't get to run again).

Why dont you ring Richard and orginise your second run for some time during the week???

Its not anyones fault that you left before having a second run, we had 37 cars to dyno and some people had to get going, one guy didnt even get to run as he had to go to work...

Rather than taking a negitive view of this matter why not use that energy and try and make something positive from it. Take the time to jump on the phone with Richard and tell him you didnt get a second chance and if its possible to do it next Satureday or when its suitable for both parties?

Dont get me wrong Warrick I understand your frustration, but understand my frustration in trying to make everyone happy. As an events orginiser (official or non-official) you dont get the positive feedback you only ever get the negitive and its a downer, makes you not want to bother taking the effort and doing it again... But I do it for the users/member, as I know many enjoy these days...

Further note, it has already been stated that a 4wd dyno dynamics dyno will be used in the May dyno night, more for the GTR buys than anything but also to show some divercity in figures...

My gripe is not with SAU, the event organisers or the SAU'ers who helped on the day. Quite the contrary, I think it was an exceptionally well organised/run event considering the number of cars running and the shuffling required to get everyone on the dyno. Hats off and thank you to everyone who sacrificed their time to make it happen.

As Eug said in the other thread, Allstar should have had everything sorted BEFORE the first car rolled onto the dyno. I'm pretty sure they were still sorting things out much later than the 5th car as I was watching runs later in the morning where there were variances of ~30kw between runs on the same car..... Sorry, but that doesn't happen just by magic unless parameters onthe dyno are being changed.

Anyway, I am letting it go. In regards to going back there during the week for another run; a: I don't have the time and, b: even if I did, I CBF. I have written the day off as a bad experience and a waste of time and money which delivered inconsistent and inaccurate results.

Who owned that white 33 with the bomex/veilside looking kit with the nose off? That was the most incredible engine sound i've ever heard, and i'm not even into cars that much.

Seriously wow :P

You have got to consider the team did well enough just to fit them all on in the limited time they did have, Whos also to say that he doesnt just calibrated it for us a week before and stop business just so its all ready for us.

Yeah I see where your coming from Warrick... Its all good...

New software was the main issue and Richard was kind enough to let those people run again. All in all when planning the event he was the only workshop under $1500 for the days hire, so this was a major factor when planning. Thanks for coming also, your attendance and all others its what makes it.

In the mean time look forward to the May dyno night... We will try a dyno dynamics 4wd setup and ill try my best to keep the cost down as low as possible...

Anyways which brings me to my next post... Hold onto your dial up connection peeps... :P
