i drove my mate's 1995 model 180sx the other day with blactop sr20 which is the same engine used in the s14s aswell. it had catback exhaust and pod. honestly, straight line speed wise it felt alot like my parents' VT 3.8 v6. definately not as quick as i thought it would be.....i haven't driven a r32 so can't say which would be quicker...

factory times say both do around 15secs for 1/4 but keep in mind the r32 is a few years older than the s14s. personaly the series2 s14 has one of my favourite front ends, very mean lookin. but the rest of the car is average. and i hate sr20s.

RB20 engine/exhaust note has to be one of the sweetest sounding ever

A common misconception is that the blacktop SR20s are all the same. You can basically say that the S13/180SX motors are the same with different cam cover colours.

The S14 (and S15 motors) are different to the S13/180SX motors. Among other things, the S14/S15 motors have -

-Variable Inlet Camshaft Timing (NVCS)

-Larger turbocharger (T28 vs T25G)

-Different inlet manifold setup. (Low port vs High Port)

S15 motors are slightly different again but is of little overall significance.

Cheers :(

stupid question.. this is the type of question that should come from boostcrusing..

sigh.. well basically the S14 is superior, lighter more usable.

180sx S13 red and black are near the same. the S14 and S15 use 28 turbos and have VCT. and high port inlet.

not all s14's have variable cam timing. only the late series 2. you can tell by the lump on the rocker cover.

All S14s have variable cam timing as well as the points i mentioned earlier. How do I know? Because I own both. :(

but stock they are both slow the s14 and the r32

My r32 when i bought it was stock except for a 3" exhaust but only from the cat back... This exhaust was one of the worst I have ever seen, terrible drone and if anything was causing a loss in power, when i changed it down the track I noticed the difference straight away!

Anyway, with that sh!tter of an exhaust I g'teched my car and ran 0-100km/h in 6.5 seconds. I personally dont consider that slow... but its all in perspective i guess.

but its not fast

Regardless.... YEARS ago back before SAU was born (2001/2002) I was on SDU. One bloke managed a best of 14.2 1/4 mile out of a dead stock R32 with a good launch and some wide tyres. So not really stock as it wasn't running its stock 205/55/16's

    • 1. Factory knock sensors for now, honestly the RB26 OEM knock sensors seem ok as they're flat response instead of resonant type but they appear to be internally grounded to the block. If I do replace the sensor it would just be to get ones that are not internally grounded so a differential input can be used to reject common mode noise. Definitely plan on fixing this as a part of the tuning process. 2. Never deliberately induced knock, though I guess I could try that experiment if I really wanted to. 3. All of this is basically on a stock engine + ECU, only modification is HKS GTIII-SS turbos and a Nismo plenum. Currently I run it with the wastegate solenoid unplugged so it won't try to raise boost past wastegate pressure.
    • After being peer-pressured into paying $100 for the MW remakes, got BO6 on XBox Game Pass. I think that's worth it.
    • That's a given!  Bit hard to powdercoat it properly without removing them! 馃榿
    • No detail on compressor or turbine sizes, which doesn't help with housing size selection with that kit. However, from SR20DET mucking about and money torching perspective, a GTX2860R Gen 2 w/ 0.64 (46mm inducer) will do ~260kW on E85 about 1.5bar of boost. All in before 3000pm, which cause a gearbox to shatter. Now imagine the same turbo, on a modern motor with an extra 0.5L of displacement, and heaps of cam timing adjustability (not an on/off affair like the Nissan shit boxes). If this was my car (which I would never own or consider buying, ever!), I would go for a nice twin scroll setup, and a G30-660. Gates plumbed back, no silly shit. Lean on the cam timing, big displacement to create a flat-ish torque curve.
