Hey all. i just have a quick question about diffs. I have been working on a gear box for my subaru and have just reassembled the gear box and dont know how to set up the diff. Its a 4wd gear box set up and you can adjust the front diffs position in the gear box case via these side bearing cups or seal cover things. Well i dont know if i am confusing people or not. But if u wish to make the crown of the diff push harder on the pinion or less you just wind these bearing cup things in or out. so when you wind one side bearing cup in and the other side one out this causes the diff to move one way or the other.

The problem that i am having is do i just play with these adjustments untill the backlash in the gear box is gone. So when the slop in the diff is just taken up would this be where you need to have the crown gear. Or is there meant to be a small amount of play/slop in the diff for it to work properly. To me it would make sense to get the crown position just where the slop is gone.

Any ideas any one.

PS i know this is a skyline forum and i do have a skyline but need help with the daily driver.

You need to maintain a little clearance. Cant remember the figures from nissan off the top of my head. You also need to check the contact point.

There's a fair bit of info floating around if you google for backlash or differential clearance and that sort of stuff.
