I am getting a new clutch put in and a lot of people have said.. Why you are at it you may aswell machine the flywheel, get a lightend flywheel...

What does a lightened flywheel do... Im told increases acceleration....

My dad wants to know.. and I need a reason that will make him think it is a good idea to get... He thinks its fast enough as it is...

Also if i were to get it done, what would i tell the mechanic to do... do they just drill holes in the current one to make it lighter?

It would be good to have an answer by 10:00 tomorrow.. thats when im taking it in...

Thanks,

It's best to get an aftermarket one rather than go down the route of lightening the standard one. I guess theres an inherent risk when lightening and machining that some structural integrity may be lost and possible inconsistencies could lead to failure.

And flywheel failure is not a pretty sight or so im told.

Ok the idear of having a lightend flywheel is that it will have a considerable loss of rotating mass which in turn makes the car rev’ easier and decelerate quicker into corners.

Its best to get a Billet Steel Lightened Flywheel, that has the strength as well as being lighter. Because Flywheels do let go! so stay away from the Aluminium ones. Stick with steel youl be safer and still have the performance advantage.

An aftermarket steel flywheel will be more like $600, but it is a worthwhile improvement.

Whatever you do do not try to lighten the stock flywheel, you cannot remove enough material to make any difference without seriously weakening the thing. Also you will need to balance it afterwards.

Either get a new steel one, or leave it stock.

Is there a particular size i should ask for??

What brand ect would be best??

So you say steel would be better/safer than alloy?

Thanks,

$150 will be lucky to get you a stock steel flywheel! :(
