lightening work on the principle that, a massive negative charge is built up in the atmosphere, what then happens is the earth builds up a positive charge as well.

now when lightening strikes the earth send out these little " feelers" of positive energy, this is what usee coming up from the boat. the earth send a few of these out and then the niegative charge ' chooses" the shortest root to ground.

I've seen so many photos of the "feelers" reaching form the ground to the sky.

And the amount of energy formed in the lightening causes the air to turn to plasma, it is this plasma path that the lightening strike follows as electricity can't actually jump through air (You get a plasma trail first)
