Hey.

I'm just wondering, are these the stock shock absorbers? as one of the back ones is crook. so i'm thinking of replacing all 4. but i need to know if the ones on it are the stock Nissan ones.

and

The springs? do you know who makes them? i'm guessing there not genuine Nissan because the car rides hard as a rock.

Thanks in advance.

Based on the apperance of the shock and the dust boot, they are standard shocks.

The springs are LOVELLS coils. My guess is that the car is very low and sitting on the bumpstops as the rate on those wont make the car ride hard (very soft rating). Generally LOVELLS springs dont go very low, so my next thought would be maybe they have been cut to get the lowest possible ride height. Are they captive at full droop??

Cheers

Brad

Captive at full droop means when the shocks are at full droop (eg, car is jacked up and wheels are sagging all the way down), the springs are still held firmly by their preload and can not move.

Your fronts are captive at full droop in the front. Dont know about rear as we cant see them.

They are a progressive rate spring so i am a little surprised about your comments on the ride quality. The rear may not be though so i can't comment there.

Aftermarket springs on stock shocks is never the best idea from a performance point of view. I'd suggest a decent set of stock replacement aftermarket shocks.

I'm surprised no one has told you to to buy everything listed in the sydneykid group buy yet. Check with sydneykid to see if the bilsteins offered will be compatible with your springs, you get the added advantage of circlip height adjustment with these shocks too.

If all your chasing is a decent shock absorber with out spending the earth, or going as far as the coilovers, KYB shocks are pretty good for a standard replacement. They are not performance orientated or adjustable or anything like that, just a decent quality standard replacment.

Hope that helps.

Brad

This thread runs through why having lowered springs and standard shocks is not a good idea.

http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/in...c=103158&hl

As for heights not being too low, what are they, centre of wheel to guard on all 4 corners?

If they are less than 350 mm front and 340 mm rear, then it is too low for good handling and decent ride comfort.

Since the car is "just imported" then chances are they won't be Lovells (Australian) springs. My guess is some brand of Japanese springs, not a well known one, since none of them are that colour blue.

This thread tells you how to measure the spring rates;

http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/in...showtopic=79157

That way I can tell whether they are stupid Japanese rates or not. Since they are progressively wound, you will have to tell me the gaps between the coils. For example, in a 10 coil spring, 5 coils are 10 mm apart and

5 coils are 20 mm apart.

The Whiteline springs in the Group Buy are $144 a pair, so not a big expense if the ones that you currently have are not suitable.

Reply PM sent regarding your query on Group Buy prices etc

:) cheers :(

    • Oh wow, it's easy to forget how cheap these can be. Probably the cheapest way to travel. Though people in cars here tend to be morons and I would not feel very safe. Were scooters ever big in Australia? It used to be the thing growing up in Europe ~20 years ago. 50/70/125ccm Peugeot or Yamaha and some others. Utterly obnoxious Polini race exhausts. Kick stands that slant as much as possible. So loud. So much noise for really not moving very fast at all. But it felt cool at the time. Not sure where I'm going with this, but there is an aftermarket for mopeds! Though I'd have pictured you more for a Goldwing kind of guy after growing out of the Harley.
    • You need to know I am sorry for this.
    • As the MX5 isn't apparently "manly" enough, and I need something for runs to the local shops, and also take to my part time job at the salon, basically I can keep the MX5 away from car parks and stuff......like "flying lockers", I was wondering what I could buy to fix this issue LOL, I pick up a new Yamaha 125 Delight this arvo from Trooper Lu, basically a R1 that you can fit a slab of beer on between your feet, also, it was $29400 cheaper than a R1, so actually it's 2 x better than a R1
    • Nah. H2S. H2S is "rotten egg gas", which is what is associated with no cat. SO2 is equally nasty, and if you've ever smelt it you'll know all about it. More of a choking, acid in the back of the throat sort of thing. But you can only smell it in a narrow range up to about 1ppm. Above that, it irritates your mucous membranes, but you don't smell it.
    • Kicked the 34 in the guts, she won’t be seeing the road till I get the 31 mobile again.  wont be long and she’s a bit of a garage princess anyway haha
