what does the "V" stand for in V6?

Hey yall,

Just wondering what the "V" stands for in V6 or V8. ect.. Also whats the main differences between a straight 6 and a V6..? Someone told me the RB26dett is so good because its a straight 6 and not a V6... why is this..?

Don't know what v6 means, real engines are straight!

v 6 hsa 2 banks of 3 cylinders, with one crankshaft, so it looks like a "V" if you look from the front. Straight 6 has all cylinders in a row (almost twice as long as a v, thats why there's no straight 8s these days).

i am not so sure but i've read somewhere that inline-6 are much better engines than V6s .. Easier to generate more power .. Look at BMW even their M3 is inline-6 not V6 ..

yea 2 sets of 3 cylinders, which i think makes a V shape lol, i dont know which is better, i guess its just different dimensions

I think that the "better" come from smoother - something to do with piston/crnak position being better balanced in a straight 6. 4 cylinders are not balanced the same way, and so have extra "balance shafts" to keep everything smooth

Apparently inline engine make more power than a V shaped engine. About the only reason they are in a V shape is so they can fit a larger engine into the smaller engine bay.

And becuase they are smoother they make more power due to a better efficiency range.

If pistons are numbered (1) (2) (3) (4) (5) (6) in a straight 6...

pistons 1 and 6 go up at the same time, and 2 and 4 go up at the some time, etc. thus creating equalibrium, and balancing of the engine as a whole.

V6/8 tend to rock slightly, and to stop this, additional mechanisms are put in place.....

mmmmmm BMW Straight sixes are siiiilky smooth... where as the verada V6 i've driven is clunky as shit, mum's wagon. Whereas the 530i, 3ltr Straight Six..... oooooo baby....

Generally speaking, the inline six is a superior format.

Except in terms of manufacturing cost and space efficiency.

The RB series motor is one of the reasons I drive what I drive.
