No, Yes, well if you call working on airconditioning on oil rigs a mechanic... My back ground is I raced Karts for about ten years on and off in WA and Qld. I then raced motorcycles in Qld and after that worked and managed motorcycle race teams here and in Malaysia.

OK not sure on difference in GTS R33 - 32, about 200kg I think. The difference is the class relative to capacity. I race evo's and GTiR Nissans and GT4 Celica plus M3R Bimmers. Our Budget was $AUD30k. Still havent checked how far we went over!!! If you buy secondhand make sure the stuff has plenty of shelf life... no good having to throw away a cheap $300 harness after two years when a $600 one last for 5.

With the developement thing, we ran stock except for aero (asthetics and it works), dont throw money at things that will not take sec/km off your time. we used our own notes, but I grew up in tassie... most people do their first by sight and off the road book save $600

For your gear, hunt round at club days etc... Terra Trip, and Terra Pro are a must. We used a Shoie RJ open face.. Glass and is half the price of Bell/Arai.. Get a comfy seat that fits you snug. Five days 8hrs long time to be uncomfortable.

My car is logged, but new cars will require additional cage bars... check before you spend.

KNowng what I do now "FA" LOL I would do it the same as we did the first year... Good rubber and brakes, Good safe comfy interior, and reliable engine. We tried to have good suspension too, but only eight laps round Symmons plains B4 the prologue meant that was way out.

You must finish your first year!!!! And that is something people said, that Irealy appreciate now. You dont learn jack about an event parked in a ditch on day two!!!

Sponsors... We had very good commercial partners. Most of whom have signed on for 2004. I have been chasing sponsors for over ten years... and it is a numbers game, the more people you ask the closer you are to getting a yes! We did a full on proposal, and sold the signage positions. We came up with a value ov each sign and that is what it was invoiced at... consiquently we had some space on the sill and on the rear quatre spare. It is all about what you can do them, ie bring customers, get your head on TV in mags etc. once they are convinced you can do that, most people know the value and will find what you are asking reasonable. Only say what you can do for them, dont BS!! cos they wont come back the next year.

You will have to pay for tyres, and you will have to pay for fuel.. so sponsors are very handy indeed.

One tip, it is sometimes better to use a good product and pay for it, rather than a not so good one you get for free...

ie Brake Pads, we used ebc, and I have read some garbage on these forums about 'em, but we bought several sets to test before settling on ebc, having sponsors meant I could buy them, rather than run a less quality pad (good enough for brocky..)

Octagon will answer any ruling questions you have as the event gets closer.

GTSR22 - dont know about crews, we are trying to get to rally Tas in 2004 also, but it will depend if I'm in Oz. Put an ad in the Tassie rally clubs news letters is probabley a good way to make contacts, get numbers off CAMS. or bring your mates, the ferry is free for cars!!!

Hope this didnt bore you

See you at the prologue 2005

  • 3 weeks later...

I did not reply to this before, well actually I did but something happened and I lost a page of text, probably a blessing! However, Thanks for your reply. lots of good information.

We are SLOWLY getting there however we got this great idea to buy a already prepared race car and race that! and in a Targa Newsletter there was a Celica GT4 Rallye for 25K seemed to me to be the way to go but if we buy a car set up for another class of racing where modifications are allowed more then we will still have to spend money bringing it back to standard. Anyway at this stage we still think that the R33 is our car.

I found out its 100KG heavier than the R32 and of course it is in the higher class with the big boys, which means we will be overtaken a LOT since slower cars start first don't they? We are going to hook up with the MG car club of Newcastle, though the name subtly suggests MG's  they have more than 50% non-MG members.

Some nice ideas for the car: Perspex rear window, Whiteline suspension kit, DBA brakes, Engine is going to stay stock (as it pretty much has to be) except for air filter, oil, leads. Colour lipstick cams X2 and a couple of VHS video recorders….we’ll see, only if a mate of mine can get that stuff for free (contacts).

Do you think a video camera will help with sponsorship? I guess it depends in the type of sponsor.

Anyway, we have some neat ideas for sponsorship, hope they pan out.

Thanks for your advice. Its given us some stuff to think about!

Hope we do see you at the prologue!

Regards,

Lach

Remember you are talking about undertaking a major event.

A perspex window will give you no gains. WAFTAM for mine. The Vids are great to bore your mates... But why throw 10kg of recorders in the car. The sponsors will get no benifit from incar stuf unless you pay Octagon for the rights to the footage (they own it!!!)

The Celica's would be fun... A couple finished 3rd and 4th in 8LMSB this year.

Hope this helps..

And keep reading those rules. Good Luck

    • Just something I found searching for more info on Emotion R, apparently the ECR33 Skyline GTS25t was either originally black, or there were two of them, the black one being the original demo car, then building a white one which was part of the 1997-onwards (to at least 2008!) Cockpit Tatebayashi Tokyo Auto Salon booth demo cars. It appears that Emotion R closed down in 2008 and was declared bankrupt in 2010: http://bank-db.com/hasan/208365. Scan of a magazine with the black R33 from 1996: Wayback machine archived page from May, 2000: https://web.archive.org/web/20000529061027/http://www.emotion-r.co.jp/skyline.html Option magazine with a few photos from the Cockpit Tatebayashi booth at the Auto Salon from various years: 2002: http://www.jdm-option.com/photo/index.php?action=item&category_id=154&image_id=3507 2003: http://www.jdm-option.com/photo/index.php?action=item&category_id=137&image_id=3033 2005: http://www.jdm-option.com/photo/index.php?action=item&category_id=116&image_id=1831 In 2008 Cusco website mentions that the Cockpit Tatebayashi ECR33 was displayed at that year's Tokyo Auto Salon: https://www.cusco.co.jp/event/2008/12/post_735.html As of 2021 it appears that the ECR33 demo car ended up being exported to Florida, USA: https://rmcmiami.com/inventory/1996-nissan-skyline-r33-cockpit-tatebayashi-demo-car-big-te06-turbo-endless-brakes-lsd-450hp/ And finally here's Google streetview of the Emorion R garage in 2023 which is amazingly not only still there, but the showroom is still full of various parts in stock and funishings, etc.: https://maps.app.goo.gl/ttyEAZdZLyzermyT9 Apologies for nerding out a bit. I used to love doing this 20 years ago on SAU and got a bit nostalgic for a moment... 😅
    • Try fabricating something like this and install it under the pedals? Not sure if it's legal or not....
    • Even though I have some pretty good (brand) ratchet ringies, I avoid using them to break open tight bolts. A broken ratchet is very annoying.
    • Also, there's always room for 4 or 5 3/8" drive wobble extensions of various lengths so you can operate the ratchet from a better location.
