Hi guys,

I have just gotten my hands on a used Power FC for my series II and it has been already tuned to a Skyline with similar mods. So i have put it in just to test that everything is working ok.

My question is to those of you running a Power FC what is a safe knock level? I haven't

driven the car too hard because of this. And also not knowing who tuned it.

Oh and don't worry it will be re-tuned once i have the turbo upgrade.

So any one who can help, i'm all ears!

Thanks guys. Well it hasn't been anywhere 40 yet. There's just not much point having a gauge

or meter in your car when you don't know whats good and bad :worship:.

I gave it a bit of a stab the other day on lower boost and it shot up just over 30.

So that kinda freaked me out not knowing if that was ok or if i had just hurt my car.

not always a definative thing the knock reading....Just look for consistant reads say above 30-40 if this is happening then I would get your tune looked at. If your running under 20 all the time with an occasional hic-up I wouldt be too stresed.

The warning light/engine will come on for levels that exceed 50.

The warning light/engine will come on for levels that exceed....whatever it is set to.

I actually thought the default was 60 but you can cahnge that to anything you want :sorcerer:

Your asking for trouble if your running a previously tunned ECU in any car without at least a power run or SOME type of lambda check up!!!!

Knock is ony half the equasion. I lean tune cando the same ammount of damage that detonation will.

12 is too low really. If everything is working fine I like to tune into the low 30's. Obviously depending on NVH etc every car is different and as such the knock meter on the FC cant really be gospel.

Srewed up piston to bore clearances etc etc can contribute as well

There is no substitute for physically listening for detonation OR a proper knock box.

Thanks guys for all the input. It all helps.

Like i said i will not be using it till i have the rest of the car ready for a tune. But i have half a mind to leave it in. Just this past week i have noticed it runs twice as good with stopping and going around town then the factory ECU ever did. It doesn't seem to be any more savage on the fuel side of things either. But yes i am also cautious about the air/fuel ratio.

I put my PFC in a few weeks ago, and I am due to get it tuned in the next week or so. I was trying to really drive it like a granny because the knock reading was really bad (hope I haven't damamged the engine!). Even though I was trying to use less than 25% throttle and even less up hills and on hot days, I hit 203 once! And 120-130 a couple of other times. Never really heard any pinging though.

Anyway I just turned down the boost to 7psi and it is now drivable again with reasonable knock levels (stays under 25 mostly). Can't wait to get it tuned though so I can crank the boost up again, it feels so slow now.

So you installed your Power FC and you have been driving around on the base map?

Reallly not a smart idea.

As I said I was only on about 25% throttle, and I monitored the knock reading constantly. A couple of times I did push it a bit too far which was silly. Now that I have decreased the boost a bit I think it now is running better than ever so the base tune can not be that bad in this case any way. Anyway I just can't wait to get it tunes, but have not been able to yet as I have had to do several other things to the car first.

    • Like a Stagea, but not as cool! Hope you have enough garage space for this, or is something going to leave to make way for it?
    • The new project has arrived. I have wanted one of these for such a long time, well before that meathead Clarkson drove one in Africa. I really wanted an E34 but I have some medical issues that mean I *really* can't bump my head and the lack of airbags in the E34 made it just too big of a risk.  I don't know why I've always liked these older touring BMW's to be honest, but man I love this car. She's been pretty well maintained for her 243k's with what appears to be only a single oil leak at the oil filter housing gasket. It has a bunch of updates including later model bumper and headlights, 7 series billion-way adjustable seats and it came with a few spares and another set of wheels with legal tyres. I got a unregistered car permit from the RTA and drove it back from Canberra on Saturday.                   First cab off the rank is cleaning it up for blue slip. I dont know how picky they'll be but I figured I'd clean the headlights, fix the oil filter housing gasket, replace the speed sensors (throwing errors) and swap the OE wheels (the M Sport wheels have a big chunk out of one of the tyres.) I also need to replace all 6 gas struts - 2 for bonnet, 2 for hatch and 2 for hatch glass. The car tries to eat me whenever i open any of these. My plan for this car; Ultimately, this is a budget car. I can't afford to throw lots at it and its because I have another car that I got this, if something breaks its no big deal. I will just maintain and repair it really. But eventually I want to do a manual conversion. It actually looks pretty straight forward for E39's and the trickiest part will be sourcing the parts.  I do need to replace some suspension arms or bushes because wow, she's a floaty old girl. She's also fantastically slow. Like really, really slow. When pulling back out on to the freeway on Sat after a quick pull over I needed to wait until no cars were visible before going.  Oh, and the guy I bought it from had a gorgeous R31 GTS-X in the garage.
    • Do you have a picture? I assume it is a breather for gearbox oil as it expands, it should have a vacuum line run nice and high in the engine bay (R32 GTR has it on a top bellhousing bolt)
    • Hi all, I am putting an r33 gtst gearbox into a VL and have noticed what looks like a vacuum barb on the box (on top in the middle). Suspecting that it's a vacuum line but I'd like to double check, if someone could confirm the function of that would be great. Cheers in advance.
    • I’d love to find some where that can recover the dashes to look brand new and original. Mine has a very slight bubble, nothing compared to some I’ve seen though
