I dragged myself to a hot rod show on the weekend. Only to discover why i have so much trouble trying to get good plates for my skyline. I have a 33, and wanted to incorporate 33 into the plate, but cant find one left that i still like. Its cause all the old hot rods have them. There was a tonne of 1932 model cars with 32 plates, as well as a few 33 plates, including QIK 33 and also TUF 33. Both plates i would have liked to get. How does a skyline driver compete with all these old fogies in their hot rods.

I think you're generalising... I mean, well yeah sure you have a point... but it's all about popularity... first in first serve... it's just all the popular ones are taking... try something unique.... and maybe you can incorporate R33 into it. Just my 2 cents.

i have nothing but admiration for the people that build these cars. it takes a lot of time and dedication to do it. i didnt realise they were mostly built around early 1930s. yeah, they probably deserve the plates more than i do. that doesnt stop me from wanting them still, if anyone still knows of any good 33 plates let me know, thanks.

they probably bought the plates before you knew how to drive.

but yes, there is lots of money put into these cars. i would like to build a 1933 ford 3 window coupe, but i am looking at about $15,000 just for a rusty old shell with no motor, running gear, etc. and it isn't just a case of bolting stuff in. you have to custom make a front and rear end for it, then custom fit brakes, and steering, then custom make all the interior, the list goes on. my father-in-law does it for a living, so i know how much shit there is too it, and they mainly do F trucks, which are easy ones. but they still take about 2-3 months work (thats working 5 days a week on it).

Well you can get away cheaper than that by using reproduced bodies and chassis. For example, the following site has bodies for around $8000-$9000 and chassis kits which includes lots of goodies (brakes, diff, suspension, steering etc) for around $12000. Obviously works out more expensive than the $15k, but in the end it would still be cheaper than the "rusty old shell".
