Dont be afraid of an rb 20 dude. i just came home from willowbank where i watched a young guy that i see every morning in a neat 32 run 13.1 @ 122 mph. Hes a complete noob too so i have no doubt he will do 12's when he learns to launch it.

what he said.. diy around your budget.. (not using rb25 gearbox, which you'll need eventually).. Cost me under $3k..

workshop prices: $5k+

Haha, well about that... My RB25 box conversion cost me about the $3k mark... But then I didnt do any of it other than a bit of running around.

ok.. just been talking with some ppl's about finance.. wat could i do for 6k?

even with 6k id still go the cheaper engine..

See with 6k you MAY get lucky and put a stock 25 into it and have no worries at all ( if only everyone could be that lucky)

But the chances are that parts would be getting a little shonk, or reccomended replacing and all that jazz.

Also put into consideration that if you DO have aftermarket parts, they may not work with the RB25

(power FC // turbo manifold etc etc).

SO those parts will need to be replaced.

Problem is, is that i look at the stuff that i can do that will increase its life while i can..

That sentence in a more english response would go something like this.

"hmm i need a clutch replacement, i may as well look at a better flywheel while its on the bench"

"Replacing my rods, hmm may as well look at coilovers and injectors"

6k would get you a reallly nice rebuild of an RB20 that you would not have to worry about. (as much if you look after it)

Get some forged parts, bits and pieces that will give it that boost... cause if you are getting someone to do it.. it will cost you less now if you get them to do it at the same time.. compared to doing it bit by bit.

an Rb25 in a r32 would be hella fun... however look at your budget now.. and your budget in the future..

dont rely on the fact that nothing is going to go wrong on your 5000 rb25 conversion..

my advice, don't borrow 6k to mod your car. put the rb20 back in, wait a while like Noel is saying, then sell your car, wait a big longer until the market for sklylines fall even worse once the new laws are in. Then (if you wish) borrow the money and pick up a bargain. You never get money back on modifying your car, why not take advantage of someone else's modified car for half the price you'd pay to do it yourself, makes more sense.

Just imo.

Rebuilding an RB20 is not better than buying a RB25...plus for 6k you wouldn't even get the parts for a extensive rebuild...and that is before anyone has even touched a spanner

mmm .. its really in this next 7 months that its tight with the money (fixing this is a must).. becuse im still at school atm.. i cant work as much as i want to, but i still work as much as i can, i can afford 6k.. so i want an rb25 in it, that would be nice.. 6k seriously seems enough.. i might have found a friend that will do the install for me and is gonna teach me some stuff while we do it, wo0t? :( andi already have an r33 turbo in it (pretty new).. so it should have the same size turbo manifold n stuff? but yeah i think i would need a power fc.. im still learning dudes.. please keep commenting!

It wasnt more about the extensive rebuild..it was more of the fact of those things that just seem to pop up on engine replacements... if you use most of your money up from the engine etc.. doesnt leave a lot for the unknown.

I also got quoted ( wholesale price that is) full forged components ( ACL ) rods///bearings//gasket + the build + bullet proofing + port n polish on a SR20 for 2000.. 1000 for parts..1000 for labour.

So you can get good deals.. if i was him i would just like to have some money on theback burner just in case things pop up.

Some dude at east coast customs has spent over 15,000 on a 180sx and its STILL off the road due to the ECU being dodgy.

(incorrect wiring made ecu go boom boom)

just giving a heads up of what i have seen.

Talk to a reputable workshop or post/search in forced induction for more info on what you're going to need. Don't start the project without knowing everything you're up for, otherwise you'll be still posting in 6 months asking questions, with a car still off the road...and worst of all, you'll probably be out of money. It's a worthwhile project but when you're running a budget that can't change and you don't have a steady source of income, it can get risky. When you replace the engine you're going to probably need all sorts of new things, things you may not even think of such as a clutch, brakes, diff etc etc etc and this isn't even mentioning reliability issues that might arise. Don't just jump into this because we've all told you how "cool" it is to have a 25/26 in your 32 and make no mistake that this won't get done overnight unless you take it to a workshop that has the time and the parts to get it done quick.

The parts in my engine were wholesale and cost most of 7k the pistons alone cost the best part of 2k so I dont know where your guy was getting his prices from!

I would rather buy a stock RB25 with good compression results rather than have a cheaply built 20

RB20 POWA

Yours isn't rebuilt on $1000 dollars worth of parts now is it???

$1000 would buy 3 pistons and rings, so not really.

but dan and i have built that 20 to prove you dont have to do a 25 conversion to be cool.

    • Hi. A little bit of an update. It maybe(hope not) looks like i would need a new tranny(it would be "maybe" a cheaper or better option anyway) So i need some info. I know i need a different propshaft(i can make custom one) LSD is not a problem cuz the engine will be still(for now) N/A RB20. So if i buy RB25DET NEO tranny...is there something else i need? I read something about push/pull type but i do not know if i need to "change" something or i can just plug n play onto my engine a go? Thanks for the advice
    • Good morning all, Bit of a random question but figured I’d finally throw it out after wondering for a long while. Before I start, I'm hoping to do this purely out of personal preference. I think it would look better at night, and don't mind at all spending a few hours and dollars to get it done. I've copied this from a non-Skyline specific forum, so I apologize for the explanation of our headlight switch setup that we all know. Here we go: Zero lights (switch off) Parking lights (switch position 1) being a rectangular marker on the outside of the housing, my low beam being the projector in the centre (position 2), and a high beam triggered by my turn signal stalk. Most North American cars I’ve owned of this era have power to the amber corner (turning indicator) light as part of the first switch (parking lights). I’d love to have these amber corners receive power when the headlights and parking lights are on (headlight switch), yet still blink when using the turn signal which is of course a separate switch. Hopefully I’ve explained my question correctly. Is anyone aware of a way in which I might be able to achieve this? Thanks in advance
    • My heads are cathedral port! It's likely possible, but I don't want to add any extra moving parts (I know they don't move) between the heads, manifolds, etc. It will also affect how injectors/fuel rails etc sit and I don't really know if it would change how the FAST manifold goes/sits/fits. I have the LS6 steam pipes already as I have a very late LS1 block so it should be fine. I couldn't find anyone who had ever actually used one for this purpose, it seems 100% of people grind the water pump. The thermal spacers are 12mm and are half way to the cost of the newer water pump anyhow... so if it comes to that I suppose I'd rather buy a new pump. The bearing in the pump I do have is a little.. clunky, but it hasn't done that much time and I never noticed it when the car was together in the past few years, so..
    • The bushing has failed, not all that uncommon for a car of this age.  Any mechanic should be able to push in a new bushing for you, or you can probably buy the entire lower control arm, complete with bushes.
    • Could you not use "thermal" spacers to give the clearance, like the ones I used between the blower and head? That raised the manifold height by around 10-15mm Albeit the ones I used were for cathedral ports, but I assume they have similar for rectangular ports????
