He has more power and less weight. Get more power (easy) and you will win more races. R33's are a factory built sports car, your SS is a sporty family car. Big differance. You can beat then easily but remember what the car is. If you want to beat sports cars you need to build a sports car.

Okay so R33's are a factory built sports car.. Funny how they think that and call Skylines "jap taxi's" and what not.

Ohhh well. there attitude is just gold. to be honest i enjoy it and hope they never change.

scathing your mincing words.

Welcome to the Internet.

When you're arguing about definitions, all you can really do is mince words. If you just let a definition you feel is erroneous stand, its how misinformation becomes canon.

This has to be one of the dumbest threads.

I'm sure they're looking at this and saying the same thing about us "Gee they look like idiots".

The thing about cars is, everyone who is an enthusiast hates cars that are not like their own.

V8 drivers call turbos ricers.

Turbo drivers call them bogans.

Get over it. If you're happy with your car, who cares what anyone else thinks, its a personal choice, and the amount of carrying on going on in this thread makes you look just bad as them bitching about a turbo beating them. Big woop, I know plenty V8s that could absolutely destroy most turbos. Its the way the world works, and the fact of the matter is no matter how good your car is, someone out there is always going to be better.

I love my skylines and turbo's but when it comes to v8's nothing sounds better then a GTHO phase 3. Those cars have status. Some are going for close to half a mill these days. crazy.

I like all cars.. the only ones i dont like are Excel's and daewoo's , KIA's.... those russian things.

Reading through that thread i never been able to see it from their side of things and it interests me.. i would really like to know how many of those guys that are bragging about beating skylines all the time have come up against a 300+ rwkw riceline jap taxi.

Would it be fair to say that buying a r33 $12k and spending 12k on it in the right places could send it down the quarter in 10 seconds and bag at least 320rwkw.

What would 24k get you in a holden ls1 could you even buy one for that ? (i dont know anything about holdens as i am not into them) ?? i dont want to start a shit fight here i am just interested in understanding them a bit more.

this thread really does bring out the japanese version of bogans.

a few things to remember about the skyline.

it came in both 2 and 4 door (like the commodore/monaro did).

they are family cars. they are just smaller people so need less space. you try and fit 5 adults into a skyline. the silvia/200sx is more of a sports car than a skyline.

skylines came in turbo/non turbo models (could be compared to v6/v8 in the commodore)

the roads in japan are generally a lot better than in aus so the suspension can be stiffer and smoother than an aussie built car. i know that on a rough road i'd rather be in a aussie built car.

the octane rating of fuel in japan is higher than here, so they can tune the motors for more power. they don't have to detune them so much. the xr6t is tuned so that it will run on 91 octane fuel if you need to. just look at the performance difference between the JDM and ADM 200sx.

earlier model commodores are lighter than skylines.

most v8 commodores out there that people brag about beating have a cat back exhaust (about $500 worth of performance mods). most skylines out there have turbo back exhaust, boost controller and FMIC. now depending on brands thats anywhere from $1000 to $2000 worth of mods. which is more than what the commodore has. spend the same on the commodore and see how much it gains. and then if the skyline has an aftermarket ecu on it add that onto the cost of mods.

and in my opinion people who put a gtr bodykit on a skyline are no better than someone who puts a hsv bodykit on a commodore.

now i'm, not saying commodores are better, just putting a few things in perspecitve. i get sick of people saying "i wasted a commodore in my skyline" when they may have $3000 worth of performance mods and the commodore has just had an exhaust done. i'd be worried if you had spent that much on mods and not beaten a pretty much stock commodore. i think skylines are great cars, but i am a car enthusiest, not a green eyed import monster. i know that a commodore with a bit of money spent on it can beat a skyline, and vice versa.

What would 24k get you in a holden ls1 could you even buy one for that ? (i dont know anything about holdens as i am not into them) ?? i dont want to start a shit fight here i am just interested in understanding them a bit more.

yes. you can pick up a gen 3 ss for about $15

ok so how much to get them to do a 10 sec quarter??

Does it really matter?

You can buy a datsun 1200 for $1000 and spend 20grand on an engine to get it to run 10secs. Does it make it a car that you would buy?

Everyone likes the styling or driving characteristics of their car for some reason, its all personal preference.

Not everything revolves around how fast your car does a quarter in.

What would 24k get you in a holden ls1 could you even buy one for that ? (i dont know anything about holdens as i am not into them) ?? i dont want to start a shit fight here i am just interested in understanding them a bit more.

APS' TT kit and an exhaust on a LS1 sees you at 400rwkW. It'll only see you into the 11's, but if you have some change left over you could look at doing some suspension work to put that power down. I doubt the kit would cost more than $15K all told. And you're getting a newer car in the bargain.

And, don't forget, APS is notoriously overpriced for the power you get. You could probably go to a less anal-retentive company and get the same output for a lot less.

However, the APS car will be completely street legal. And while you might be a second faster across 400m, over 30km of metropolitan roads on a Friday or Saturday night chances are the Commodore will get to the end a lot faster because you've been pulled over and defected in your overly loud car with its surging power delivery.

ok so how much to get them to do a 10 sec quarter??

does that determine which is a better car? how much it takes to get it to run a 10 second pass? if you go off that line of thinking then my mates sigma wins hands down. cost him $2500 for the car, spent $2500 putting a redtop sr20 in it and on stock ecu, turbo, injectors, etc and stock open centre diff ran a 12.56 at the 2005 jamboree. does that mean its a better car than a commodore? no. it still handled like a car made in 1982, it was twisting the body and tearing the seam of the firewall apart from the launches

does that determine which is a better car? how much it takes to get it to run a 10 second pass?

If all you're interested in is how fast something goes in a straight line, why would you buy a Skyline? I thought they were fully sick "cornering machines"...? I thought straight line drags were the domain of knuckle dragging, heavy-engined V8s....

i am not asking which car is better i am just wondering the cost of the setup. I am not interested in getting into any arguements about what is better.

Can the ls1 gearbox's handle the power ? will they break easy and if so how much more would it cost to get a box to handle the job? and how much is a exhaust system worth ?

earlier model commodores are lighter than skylines.

Oh Really so a VL commodore is lighter than an Hr31 skyline? And the Vl has a Nissan bottom end. GMH made turbo commodores, Ford had there Turbo Sierra's all car companies have done it!

The reason that V8's are still alive are for the bogans, the hords of HSV anf FPV fans, hence why they made there own racing class to exclude turbo vehicles. (Not only skylines) They prefer to race with 20 year technology and then proceed to sell Joe public over priced POS that claim to have new features as ESC which has been in most Jap cars for over 10 years. So to all the Joe public who go around with blinkers on buying over priced under equipped vehicles that are direct rip off's of Audi A4's which are only 5k cheaper.

I will choose the Audi with superiour build quality and features over a locally built over priced POS. It is a matter that locally built cars in oz need to step up to the plate and provide the features that overseas models have. They have no real competition with the Federal and state governments helping the industry wit tariff's on imports and tight import laws to slow the stream of privately imported vehicles.

BTW Wheels car of the year mean Jack Sh1T! They are the only ones that made the following the car of the year

Leyland P76!

Holden Camira!

Triumph Stag!

Morris 1250!

All found to be the biggest lemons of all time now add...... VE Commodore (Leaking fuel lines, Gen 3 V8's that still dump oil)

as you can't half tell I am feed up with Aussie built cars and the shit I have gone through with my lease car and my privately owned car.

Imported cars FTW :pirate:

a few things to remember about the skyline.

they are family cars. they are just smaller people so need less space. you try and fit 5 adults into a skyline. the silvia/200sx is more of a sports car than a skyline.

I wouldnt say a Silvia is more of a sports car than a GTR of the same year.

skylines came in turbo/non turbo models (could be compared to v6/v8 in the commodore)

Compare a 2.0/2.5L Skyline to a 4.0, 3.9L V6 Commodore, Yeah, right..

Seriously,

You guys are just as bad as them.

look at half the comments in this thread.

Half the guys on that forum are decent blokes and I know quite a few, and are proper enthusiasts unlike half here.

Sure, some go on like tools which was demonstrated - but so do half you lot in a reversed situation.

A true enthusiast will respect any car with decent performance no matter what badge lies on the bonnet.

Oh, for the record, I have owned a nicely modified gen3 LS1 - its quicker than my R33 at EC track.

But now Ive spent more on my boat - it will be quicker.

Just remember - every group of car owners (skylines, xr6 turbo's, gen3 commodores, Porsche, NS.com...etc etc) has a

"tool factor" that gives the rest a bad name.

your ruining our fun :pirate:

and i mostly look at what modifications the person has made to their own car to make it better... thats how i rate people in this car world... most people with Big V8s brag on going, (and i have a friend who is into the car sceneand he said exactly this)

"it made 270 on the dyno"

ME:"cool, what mods have you done to it?"

"None..."

"you GUNNA do any?"

"nup..."

"so... you have a completely stock car and your bragging about how much power YOUR car has... this is more Holdens car then yours right now..."

dunno why but that just shits me...

    • Right, here's a video of the basic operation at least.  This is what you can expect day to day when you turn the car on and it boots from standby.  The only thing from a media point of view I haven't gotten working is for it to autoplay plexamp when it turns on from standby (it works from cold boot) but that's more of a plexamp problem as it will autoplay other music players.  Also attached is my one stray cable.  It's part of the screen's wiring adapters but there's just nowhere for it to go in my car.  I've just now done a bit of research and found a matching port on a 2010-2014 head unit with BOSE.  Mine has no BOSE so that's that case pretty much closed I think.  Plugging in the Infiniti AC panel basically did nothing for me, so that's a dead end as well.  Next port of call is to mess with this CANBUS module and see what I can find from it.  I found this resource containing the DBC files for a 2010+ G37 : https://github.com/icecube45/Dash_InfinitiG37/blob/master/InfinitiG37.dbc I'll now have something to go from when I try to extract my CANBUS data so I can see if the HVAC Mode, Fan Speed, Temperature, etc. match and also the gear shifter position.  It's a pretty big assumption that it's just mismatched CAN signals but considering all the devices in the CAN network are talking to each other (AC can be fully adjusted just with no info on screen) it might be a safe one.  I will report back WhatsApp Video 2025-02-26 at 12.49.10.mp4
    • Thanks for that Paul.  Do you think if I posted a picture you'd be able to remember where it went?
    • Sorry Duncan, I didn't get a notification for the replies.  Thanks for responding!  It's a full Android device, but does allow you to use CarPlay/AA as well.  This is the one I bought from NaviRS on AliExpress: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006368602668.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.111.59aa1802JDzQ0E - the 2K 8G-256G CAM variant but it seems to have gone up by £170 since I bought it!  My purchase was £307.14.   It's not the fastest thing in the world but performs perfectly adequately.  It stays on standby unless I disconnect the battery and let it power down, then it's just a fairly standard Android bootup time from cold.  The DSP Equaliser is very nice and made the standard stereo system sound pretty decent compared to the stock screen.  Perhaps I can take a video of it when I get a sec. It *allegedly* supports the reverse camera, but I'm yet to get that working.  It has options for reverse cam (a camera unit can be bought separately) or 360 cameras (also bought separately).  To be fair it doesn't seem to detect that the shifter was put into reverse but I'm working on a theory about this as well.  At the moment I'm going without which is a bit annoying considering the car is an absolute canal barge but so far I haven't caused any damage I'll grab a picture of the wire I'm missing later today when I can get outside.  My theory, by the by, is that not only is the head unit different, but the CANBUS network has different signals for the different years.  I think this because I have a spare AC panel from a newer Infiniti G37 (as opposed to my Nissan panel) which wouldn't control anything except the volume when I had it wired up with the stock system.  I'm going to throw it back in and see if the screen will respond to it.  I've just ordered an arduino CANBUS module so I can have a look at the signals going around the car and see if I can spot anything.  I'm thinking if I can work out what it's expecting vs what it's getting I might be able to translate and relay the signal back but so far just a theory anyway. I also found this on my travels, so far the only one that specifically matches my car: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002822934280.html?spm=a2g0s.imconversation.0.0.33433e5fgttovi If you look at the picture of the before, it has the card reader slot, and the picture of the head unit is exactly the same as the one pictured in my original post.  I asked if they sell the cables separately but sadly they won't.  I didn't want to just buy this one because it's a super old Android version and only dual core - likely slow as hell.
    • As above, you did refill the coolant and burp the system before running it again didn't you?
    • To be fair - you see the same thing for every clutch. There's always someone making an installation error.
