Not a question, but I agree with much of what Mud & Col are trying to say. There aren't many days when I come on here and don't see a thread started for something completely useless, in the wrong section or already covered 11ty billions times before. QLD never use to be dead, but at the same time it didn't contain the amount of garbage it does atm. Stopping stupid threads doesn't stop conversation, just useless conversation that could be had in whoretown.

Matt

THANK YOU! Personally, i'm f**king sick of seeing random shit in here when you know for sure it's been covered earlier.

1 time or 11ty aquillion, Who are they hurting. Noobs want to feel part of the scene but nothing will turn them away faster than being told...GO SEARCH...

I'm sorry, I was a 'n00b' once, and probably am still considered one, but really, how hard is it to type in your word and hit search. It's amazing what you'll find when you just go looking. And you'll more than likely find more info on the topic you're looking for, as a lot of people that post in, say, forced induction, won't come into QLD just to see if someone has made a new thread asking for help. I agree that, by all means, if you have searched and found nothing, then make a thread, and state that you found nothing. Jeebus people are so highly strung. IT'S TEH INTERWEB FOOLS!!!

When I started on here, Qld used to have the shit moderated out of it. You'd start a thread asking a question, a mod would do a search, find info on what you're asking, link the thread and say 'closed'. And I found this far more helpful, cos like I said earlier, more people had the opportunity to discuss your query at an earlier date, and more information was collectively gathered.

I think the other thing you've got to keep in mind is, the mods are just doing what they've been told to do. They don't make the rules and they don't pay for the amount of bandwidth used. Every little bit counts!

gah, ive seen pranks hosting dramas, and i guess you have a point anna with bandwidth wasting

in a perfect world where sau had unlimited bandwidth, i would prefer little or no moderation

but i spose when its costing peeps $$$$$, i guess something should be done

There is a simple solution, and that's simply a better server.. US based, none of this aussie rubbish.

I don't even know why SAU is still on sanitytech .. prices seem extreme, performance seems slow. For the same price you could have terrabytes of transfer over in the states. My old site, I had 1.8tb downloaded in a month at one point, and thousands of visitors a day. Cost me $50/aud a month, and the server never died or had database issues.

No probs anna. Noobs wont even have to register. Just "search" and be on your way. Nothing to see here.

You just dont get it. The secret to keeping new people is to make them feel welcome. You wont do that by not intercoursing with them. "search" doesnt cut it in any way shape or form. If the thread isnt to your liking there is a simple answer. Dont read it and, certainly dont respond by saying "search" Believe me their isnt a bigger turnoff in the whole forum scene than that one word.

100% correct

have you seen the amount of people who have only had a question to ask , got flamed or told to search AND have not come back????

quite a few I reckon

Ok, I gotta say Im with the mods on this, after being a mod on a number of other sites they are always in between a rock and a hard place no matter what they do.

Now some sections of the forum need to be a heavy hand. Ie tech sections, forsale section etc. Reason being is the whole search thing for one, bandwidth another. And making sure buyers dont waste sellers time. ETC.

Now other sections dont need really any form of major moderation, just a bit of an eye on things (ie porn being posted etc). Such as whoretown, or the offtopic sections. Reason being, is thats what they are for, random rubbish.

Then we have the other sections in between. Now the newbies need to think a little of all the members who have been on here 2, 3, 4, or even 5 years and have seen the same topics popping up 3 times a week for all that time. What you need to do is look and learn and read a bit first. If you stuff up think about it as an initiation when everyone jumps down your neck. So searching, the default search searches for 30 DAYS ONLY, so you need to change that option so it can search properly. So as mud has said, the same threads keep rocking up, powerfc tune, which mechanic, which paint shop etc etc. Thing here is we DID have the services thread sticked, so MY suggestion would be to bring it back. At least then its one less excuse people have to post which shop to go to.

I think some of you are missing the point tho. What is being said is SAU queensland type thing related chat. Not just skylines. So we have whoretown, we have a spotted thread, we have a events section, we have our own forsale section. So the repeat stuff shouldnt be needed, along with some of the offtopic stuff.

Sprout as much shit as you want about noobs, but the point is, everyone was one to begin with, and everyone has to find out how each forum works. Sorry if this doesn't match up with what you've expected, but this is just how it is. There was a lot of us join up around the same time I did, and you really have no idea of what we were put through as noobs. You've got it easy, and that's the way it should be. A group of us on exec started about 18 months ago, we had 88 members. And they were dropping like flies due to what previous members/whores had put noobs through. Yeh the forum and the club are seperate entities, but one can't survive without the other. I strongly urge you to PM Christian and advise him you want to donate $$$ to help run the forums to allow people to make pointless threads. And afterwards, how bout you ask him to become a mod, that way you can fight him on issues such as this.

I don't want to discourage new comers to ask questions, fark that's what the forum is here for, and the more the merrier. I just agree with mods on this one, and I think the number of threads and money spent could be greatly reduced by doing a quick search, and then if there's no info, start a thread. It's not that hard and I don't see why people are getting so riled up by a simple request.

And Mud, you're an idiot for leaving this open. It should have been a CLOSED thread from the start  This is another age old argument that never gets won by anyone. The mods do their job for a while, become lenient and it all starts again.

Its really quite simple anna. do you want new users or not. What you whine about having to put up with is precisely what i am telling you noobs shouldnt have to put up with. As for a donation. Well. if someone were to ask me instead of trying to get in my face with it i would be only too willing to oblige. I am not that short sighted that i dont understand the cost of running these forums. But tell me, Is anybody out of pocket as a result of this forum, and, If they are then they should speak up and say so, I am sure i am not the only one willing to contribute to the running costs of our board.

As for becoming a mod. Do you think that would work, after all i have been quite open about my attitude to noobs and my willingness to let them have their say.

Theres an old saying anna. You will catch more flys with honey than with vinegar. Noobs learn soon enough the lay of the forum simply by being allowed free rein to get to know how it works. Caning them for asking an old question will not encourage them to stay around and and get to know how it really does work.

As for wasted bandwidth, I can think of sections of this forum that are a waste of life. Can them, not the potential long term contributor in the form of the noob coming on board and wanting to share his smiles with fellow liners. The one you can may well be the one who could have contributed plenty in the long term but we end up losing them by shortsighted and impatient moderating.

Sure if a noob persists then by all means take steps to remedy the situ but telling them to go search is not in any way conducive to making them feel welcome or wanting to stay in it for the long road.

I don't get it... how is asking someone to do a simple 5 second search making them want to leave? That's really all this is about. Do you find it that difficult to perform?

If someone comes to your door and asks, May I use your bathroom? Do you A. say find it yourself. Or B. say of course you can. Its the first door on the left down the hall. It is simply a way of breaking the ice with a potential new member and making them feel at home.

This forum has one of the highest hit rates and the largest member bases, obtaining new members to the forum doesn't equal more money to Christian (who IS out of pocket for this website!!!) because unless they donate....the forum gets nothing other than them using up bandwith to create useless topics. SAU lived long before now with plenty of conversation and, as Anna said, much heavier moderation. The n00bs need to learn that, sure we do want new members, but that doesn't give them free way to ignore the search function, create new threads every 2 seconds and talk garbage that everyone else does in whoretown. The n00bs don't get any more leeway than anyone else on here and that's the way it should be, this isn't a gym or club were every new member means more money so why does it seem like everyone is acting as though we should feel sorry for every n00b and give them special treatment. SAU Qld will not "die" because we discourage useless threads, in fact this whole thing is a result of ppl complaining (as I understand it).

Shall we go to whoretown and define "garbage"

Up the top there is a button labeld "Search", i suggest you click on that and type in 'garbage' and i'm certain u'll find what ur looking for in there

No I tell them to f**k off and go to the servo down the road. And if they s-hit on my lawn I'll turn the sprinkers on.

So being a postwhore doesnt use up bandwidth? Someone with 11ty thousand posts is posting each and everyone of them on topic and is helping the greater community? I f**king doubt it, I dont see the mods jumping up and down about their precious bandwith with whoring, just the boring stuff that they dont like.

Yeah, the boring stuff. Like asking questions about skylines etc. How dare they!

No. The mods are enforcing the rules as set out by Christian (who owns these forums)....so some of you should cut them some slack. As has already been covered, most of the useless threads could have been answered by searching...SO WHY DO WE NEED A NEW THREAD and why should the mods allow it?? The other useless threads are usually stupid things, such as taking the p*ss or things unrelated to anything...and could have been posted in whoretown. It's simple really, follow the rules: do a quick search, if you can't find anything, make a new thread (in the correct section) and keep whoring to the place called "whoretown". Is it really that hard?
