**UPDATE

It's not necessarily over. Things aren't as bad as I thought, the chassis seems to be fine...

Wednesday night I managed to smash my car. I wasn't speeding at all, I just miscalculated the effect of the drizzle and lost rear wheel traction a bit too close to a parked car. The impact occured on the left and the car sort of span around against the second car which is written off because it was next to a power pole (and it was a shitbox anyway)

I don't think it would have been as bad if i had a proper front bar because of the bits of metal they cut out of the supports. The impact occured at about 20km/h but it still managed to do some serious enough damage.

The lesson: watch those aftermarket body kits, they don't offer any protection if you cut bits out to fit them

The car is now at a panel beater and I will decide what to do once I get quotes on labour and parts

Sorry to hear that buddy. A similar thing happended to me where the fibreglass bumper disintegrates on impact leaving everything behind to take a heavy blow.

The only advice I can give is to shop around before starting the 8k repair, you will find some big differences in repair costs between different panel beaters.

well i definitely don't intend on starting an 8k repair

the problem is i've only got about 4k i can spare to get the thing repaired. If i can't get it on the road for that (i.e. ignore things like painting panels etc) then I'm going to have to look at other options like selling it.

From what i've been told the engine is completely fine other than what i mentions, but i haven't got a clue about the chassis infront of the doors.

The guy said it would be 4k in labour alone, which i find shockingly huge.

How much could i expect if i sold the car as is?

*tears* ... so sorry to hear about that Max.. and it can happen so easily too - it just takes that one second and bang.

Yer, if the chasis is bent they gotta get it on the chasis machine (whatever the correct name for it), and straighten the whole frame if they can.. not cheap.

You may get $3-4k for the engine and gearbox on its own? Plenty of people want to whack them in r32 or another car so there is a bit of demand. The rest of it you may get $4-5k?? Might get something for the compliance plate if somebody is desparate enough to do a body swap job. So maybe $10k all up? Did you have any other gizmos on there??

btw: it pays to get agreed value on a skyline... they're worth a lot more than what the insurance companies claim..

Don't mean to be rude or anything but honestly what protection is a plastic or fibreglass front bar going to offer if the impact was strong enough to bend your chassis? Maybe if you had a bullbar.

I'd be taking a loan out to pay for the repair bill and then selling the car, or stripping it for parts.

a proper bumper is attached to the chassis properly, with a metal brace behind it... that absorbs a lot of impact through crumpling

the aftermarket one i had was attached to pretty much nothing but some supports at the front at the sides and it snapped like a twig on impact. when i was clearing it off the road afterwards i could snap it with one hand to fit it into my boot.

Keep your original body kits ppl

There is! bumpers are covered by ADRs, we just ignore them like all the other rules we don't like (can anyway say "external blow off valve?")

Sorry to hear about the accident. You did have third party property insurance, right? Otherwise, I recommend heading to Majorca

pooowaaarr mattee

ball breaker

i would cry if that happened to me...

what u do now..

u get ur car back the way it is

u get fu comp insurance...

u wait 4 months

then u make ur car disappear.........

and drive ur missus beast..

i still think that car rocks..

i cant believe it.. man i feel for ya.. i got 3rd party as well...

i say we organise a save maximus car fundation and organise a cruise 10 bux entry fee.. try get as much mates as u can to come along..

help ya out...

what all we need is?? ... um 800 people

hmmm

'

yeah i'll borrow the mini from now on!

i'm sure i can get a better quote for the work too, i'm just looking for who best to speak too

if bumper bars are covered by ADR's, does that mean i can sue the engineer who signed off on my car for negligence? (i'm a law student but i haven't covered stuff like this yet)

lol! I like the sue the engineer idea!

I think that is the argument (valid or not) as to why you can't bring in modified cars any more - they used to approve an unmodifed car as meeting ADRs, but then compliers could bring in ones with different parts anyway!

yup, or chop and shuts could be done, and all sorts of things.

While its a bit of pain in the ass, i think its better in many ways they don't allow so many imports in without some type of checking. If there is an opportunity for a shortcut to be done, without adequate monitoring it will be done... and often it can result in dangerous shortcuts been taken (inadequate supports for bumpers is a prime example)

    • Thanks for the info. The only "Issue" I've had with the shifter is I always found the throw between 4th and 6th gear too close. I'm always worried to shift into 4th accidently and sending my motor to the moon. Adam LZ recently came out with a video and stated Serialnine revised their shifters to correct this and will change all the revised parts for 150$. Strangely enough, I contacted Serialnine right after and they denied it and said it's bullshit. I found that strange as he's a distributer. I'll keep this forum post updated on that saga.
    • Yep that is correct. It allows you to adjust the short throw range from what I can tell
    • Car has been running great, I've put about 300km's of break in time on it. First thing that stands out with properly sealing rings is no more noticeable crankcase smell coming out of my catch can. This may seem insignificant, but the constant smell while driving around was infuriating. It's also nice to see my oil level remain stable. Two new issues have developed that I only noticed this weekend though. There's a very noticeable driveline vibration past 100kmh. I only noticed it now as I've been babying it under 100kmh in the backroads. This comes as no surprise as I'm running a one-piece shaft, and I paid zero attention to my driveshaft angle when I put everything back in. I also have a fair bit of voltage drop on hot starts. The starter audibly is forcing. No issues on cold start though. I must not have removed all the paint under my main block ground during assembly. I'll try and take care of both those issues this week once the kids are asleep.  I also received all the parts I was missing for my direct port setup. I will hopefully have pictures of that up soon. I'm hoping to get back on the dyno the week of June 30th as I'll be on vacation. I'm confident I should be able to make north of 500rwkw on pump gas and WMI. I'll go back again later this summer with E98, but I want to confirm my ethanol content sensor is working properly first. I've never seen it read anything but 11%. This makes sense for our 10% ethanol content pump gas here, but I would expect the occasional movement between fill ups.
    • 75% complete. Will now need to get a new axle with 5x114.3 hubs and then figure out how to customize some mudguards for it once the wheels are on.
    • Trailer prep is underway... Lined up the wheel to get a rough indication of how it would sit Then removed all the bits (as far as possible) and gave the frame a light sand and quick lick of paint   Then added some carpet
