Az u all probably know by now i know didly squat about turbo motors.. thats why im here ;) i put da post up what does the "V" stand for in V6... :P Anywayz i was wondering if someone could break down the whole turbo process for me... this is all i know... a turbo forces more air into the cylinder thus burns more petrol, which in turn creates more power... 1 big thing i dont understand is people say superchargers are belt driven and turbos work off spent exahust,,, what does this exactly mean...?

well 2 force more air into the engine u need sumfin to force it in there... this is where a turbo or supercharger comes into effect.

Think of it like a windmill thingy you make when u were a kid. When u blow on the windmill it spins faster. This is the theory behind a turbo, the exhaust gases from your engine spin the turbine, which in turn forces more air into ya anegine.

Superchargers are the same thing, cept instead of exhaust gases, the turbine is spun around by a belt attached to the engine. (So there's not lag, from waiting for the exhaust gas to build up to spin the turbine fast)

That should answa u'r q.

Turbo = sky is the limit high boost etc...

Super charge... = also high boost more power

disadvantages would be...

Turbo = some thing we call "TURBO LAG" time it takes spool up bigger the turbo MORE time to take but BIG power

Super charger= because it spools it from engine speed so NO LAG, instant power... ;)

Advantages of a turbo over a super charger are that it is very light + compact,and it uses energy from the exhaust to spin it, which is virtually free. Disadvantage is mostly the lag- when you put your foot down it takes a while for the turbo to spool up and start pumping air. The bigger the turbo the longer the lag, which is why we see twin turbo set ups. ie two small turbos rather than 1 big one. Superchargers have the advantage of being driven directly off the crank- if the engine's running the supercharger is pumping, so no lag. The disadvantages with superchargers are thet they use horsepower to turn them,and they are usually bigger, heavier, and more expensive than turbo installations.
