I've got my combined fuel usage to sit around 15L/100km, so I'm looking at an A:F controller. What are peoples experiences with the SAFC II or GReddy e-Manage? I'm not sure which one to go for yet, they both look to do the same thing.

I know SAFC II aren't made anymore, they've been replaced by the SAFC NEO, but I'd look for a 2nd hand one.

I used the jaycar one on my pulsar, back in the days when I Didnt know much. the underlying problem was really a stuffed AFM - but when I tried to "intercept" the signal and mess with it too much the ECU would add/subract timing - so I was never able to get it 100% perfect.

so those SAFC etc are good for minor corrections but tend to have limitations.

if you have the money go for the emanage ultimate. just make shure that you find someone who knows what there doing. i know you can get the ultimate of ebay for round 700 but the install can be pricey as there is no stag loom and you would have to identify each wire and cut and reattach. you got s1 or s2 as someone in wa has a s1 wired up with the emanage and it all worked well

It's only about $500 from nengun, then a bit more for the looms. They say they have an S1 Stagea compatible version, so I don't know why I'd need to hard wire it. I'm in Bathurst, so finding someone to install it is the hard part, I'll probably have to take the car to Sydney.

I'm not after a high powered solution, just something better than what I've got now (nothing) so I might end up getting the standard e-manage.

  • 4 weeks later...

I put 56ltrs in her the other day and got 450kms out of her and thats city driving with the occasional boost. and without the fuel light on...

at the moment she is sitting on 395kms with just under a quarter to go.

I must say though, I do coast a lot and read the traffic several cars ahead...

I occasionally give it stick, due to my temper rising some times being stuck behind stinky diesel vans and incompetent drivers.. lol

so whats so special about my car?

SAFCII

Greddy EBC

Apexi Pod

FMIC

and always BP Ultimate!

Last lot of Ultimate gave 14L/100, but that was with 60% freeway. The mountain really sucks the gas if you want to have a bit of fun and I usually run the 8psi on the hills. My DFA has finally been fixed. It had a dodgy component. Going to get it put in soon and follow SK instructions. Also a new O2 sensor.

Soon I hope.

what would you expect to gain out of this:

AFC neo

SITC

3" turbo back

bleed valve

im currently getting about 280 to most of a tank (never go under 1/4) most of my driving is done in peak hour, so it explains it, but fark me.

ive replaced the o2 sensor, fuel filter is getting done next week

ill probably do plugs as well...

obviously the tune would help, yes?

cheers

then whats the point of getting a turbo car?! LOL!!

the point is to have power when you need it but ONLY when you need it. When you're just cruising around, the turbo is irrelevant, and you're better off minimizing boost in these conditions.

We'd all love to thrash our cars to bits every day but its just not practical. And for the drive to work, I'd definitely prefer fuel economy to power. All other times, the turbo is awesome.

Hope this makes sense. Its not that we want our cars to drive like a prius...its just that we want the best fuel economy possible for a stagea without losing the ability to boost it up whenever :(

clean your AFM when its cold with CO contact cleaner...

I got 10.5-14.6l/100 over 1100km

I have had several large cars over the last 30 years, HQ V8's, V8 commodores, Falcons and Mazda 929 and they all used to get around 11 - 13 lt/100Ks. I now get this same figure from my series 2 and none of them had the power I have now. 23 MPG is not that bad from a big car.

umm .. can you clarify something ..

what exactly does that mean ? is 10.5-14.6 a range ? or is that city/highway? or highway/city?

highspeed hills/fwy was the lower end, and combined was the higher. lower was mobil, higher was a mix of 100 and 98ron united ethanol blends. I think i get slightly worse economy on Boost98, but it is meant to be better for the environment, so i will keep using it.

i think i have seen over 15l/100 once or twice.

doesn't boost98 have ethanol? better for the environment yes but potentially worse for your car. 5% ethanol is probably ok but beware that too much ethanol will corrode your rubber fuel lines. You probably already know this however.

I figure that my car gets very good fuel economy for its size so therefore must be tuned very efficiently and puts out less harmful emissions than when it was stock :)

fuel lines, injectors, fuel pump seals ETC, 5% occasionally normally with half a tank of mobil in the bottom seems okay... my mechanic and his peers use 10% 100ron as its near the shop, no issues yet... been a few years.

    • My 6 Point FIA harness have arrived (kinda). There was a mix up from the supplier and I ended up with 3" set rather than the 2" set. I contacted them and their customer service was top notch. It is being resolved and 2" ones will be on their way to be soon but in the mean time I was able to at least mock them up in the car to see the vibes. Need to organise some fixed back seats so i can actually use them as a 6 point. I am leaning towards the Velo Podium II XLs as I like the look of the bolstering compared to the GP90 XL or GPT2. The side and thigh bolstering on the GP90/GPT feels less that my existing Bride Digo R recliner. Velo Podium II XL Velo GP90 XL Velo GPT2
    • Yea I know the wiring would be fine just want to use I got. This was my first built engine and it blowing got me beat down just want to have it running right again but hopefully I can find a non vct head so I don’t have to do any of this lol.
    • Recently did the Perth Festival of Speed - and basically what we thought might be an average event turned out to be absolutely awesome they bought Mad Mike and Xtreme over and was good to see Perth get, support and produce something so good - 24,000 people in two days      It was nice to have it close to home for once yet have my whole crew there to run the car properly     Xtreme got the tin top laps record with 51.57    I hadnt done a hot lap on the home track for 20 months and finally everything clicked and dropped 4 secs off PB and did a 53.29 which is 3rd fastest tin top ever around that track. only 1.3 tenths behind 2nd so should eat that up soon... can I get Xtremes time - its not out of the question   Alll the blaa blaa's in the world but if I can replicate even close to that situation on other tracks will be able to make an impact     We got asked to do the hill climb to put on a show which in reality is just using some chicanes and the short track at barbs but good fun... launch control was put in and won the Pro class in that also.     Car needs some attention after being on it around Australia for last few months moreso the carbon underbody work and just a run through and clean up everything else seems to have held up good enough. Would like ,to take some weight out but that requires alot of effort 😁   Also waiting on new rules for WTAC and have some decisions to be made there and prob some minor modifications to suit pending class changes. Will see...   Divided on whether to go hard for one more year or chill out re: events this coming year prob more on the go hard and see if I can get improvements in times. If I didnt have so travel so far it would be less of an issue but I do so hmmm...   Also because build thread - gone to flappy paddles and a gearing change with a drop gear. It was becoming apparent that there were situations where I really needed to be hanging onto the wheel with both hands yet had to change gears and was getting a little sketchy and / or I just didnt change gears and delt with it and also 5th gear at 10,000 rpm is 290 kmph so I havent been using 6th as did 282 at WTAC and 274 in Perth drop gear will change to 6th being 300 at 10,000 rpm should also get a touch more acceleration speed
    • No, not really. Except that there are newer, better cam options that don't date back to the 90s. I was under the impression that you couldn't use VCT with them, which is why I said to get rid of them. If you can't/won't use VCT because of what you listed above, that's another matter. Although I would have said the wiring aspect of it was something that you should just suck up and do, as it isn't hard. Getting an actuator for the cam gear will possibly be expensive. I still say VCT is for the win. There's a reason HKS makes money selling it for 26s.
    • Is there something wrong with using tomei?  I’ve heard the tomei usa are fake parts. Reason why I don’t want to make vct work is one gotta make a plug for the solenoid get the vct cam gear. I rather just use the stuff I already have. I made 450 on 17psi full boost at 4K. I’m satisfied with that it’s a street car and sometimes hit the track for drift. If I’m really wanting to decrease the lag I’ll go to a smaller rear housing as I have an extra or even cam gears.
