Hey im after some new brake pads for my front brakes.

Basically what i really want them to do is not squeak, becasue the ones i have now are ultimates and they squeak like crazy especially when cold, when i drive off in the morning and touch the brakes for the first time they are really bad. So just wondering what you guys use and if they squeak at all cause i hate the noise.

The way you fit the pads can make a big difference with noise. Have you got the factory anti-squeal shim kit? Adding some of that CBC goo to the back of my shims completely quietened my brakes (pads are ferodo DS2500s, which i'm guessing should squeal worse that the ultimates as they are a more hardcore pad). You can see the CBC bottle here. Any spare parts shop should have it.

Yeah ive got Bendix Ultimates and the red anti squeel goo fixed up my left wheel, im going to do the right one next weekend.

I had project mus on the fronts, and they were excellent!! a little squeal on first startup while only reveresing lol..

I now have standard nissan pads (they pull up well + no noise)

So i say, project mus or standard nissan pads!!

Well thats what happens to mine, they squeel only when reversing, not when going forward.

BTW, how long does the red goo work for?

dont get RB74 pads then. They stop you very very well and sometimes they are not to noisy but for the most part they squeel

hmmm I have the RB74's in the front and their Comp 2's in the rear... mine don't squeel... although I put slotted rotors on front & rear at the same time... not sure if it helped having new rotors :D

I found the RB74's are quite dusty though... could be just my rims showing it up more though??????

I've run:

pagid 14s comp3

of those the SSS, the RB74, the bendix and the nissan pads all gave no noise at all.

the mu HC+ give a little bit of noise every now and then, but it's not a big deal.

the CCR were by far the noisiest and the pagid were a bit noisy too

the RB74 were by far the dustiest with the ultimates and the CCR and the pagid not far behind, then the HC+ and then the SSS and nearly no dust from the nissan.

for street use I think the SSS were top of the tree. They were very quiet, had good feel, bareable dust, worked well frorm cold, and good enough for 'fun' driving, or 1 or 2 laps of a track. not good for prolonged track use though.

the CCR were not that good on the street. very, very noisy, dusty and needed 1 or 2 stops to work well. on the track they were good. I never got a chance to fade them as the rest of my gear wasn't up to the task.

the ultimates are very good on street. but sooo dusty. they are also very cheap which is nice, and seem quite soft so they shouldn't wear rotors too badly.

the RB74s are a cheap pad. they were ok, but I wouldn't buy them again. very dusty. but worked quite well, but seemed quite hard on rotors.

pagids rubbish on street, great on track.

nissans, ok on street (quiet, not dusty) but overpriced and rubbish on track (and there are better street options imo)

mu HC+ not bad on street. not too dusty, not too noisy and have quite good feel, and work well enough from cold. haven't tried them on track yet.

there are probably other pad combos i've tried but can't remember them all off the top of my head.

hmm well i put the RB74's in with a brand new set of slotted DBA 4000's and they squeeled pretty bad. As i mentioned they go through stages sometimes they will be quite for a month or two then they will go a week or two squeeling. Probably just been babied to much as a good hard run cleans them up and stops the noise... also i agree that they are dusty but i would disagree with them being only ok... i find that when they heat up they perform really well it does not seem to matter how much you throw at them they just bite harder.

fair enough. everyone has a different opinion. but they should not be noisy at all. if installed and bedded correctly with factory shims, and high temp or moly grease they are 100% silent. also, you may think they are excellent but how many other combos have you tried? I can tell you on track they can/will fade, and when very hot have been known to fall appart as they are a rebonded pad (ie, they get old backings and glue new friction material to it). this is one of the reasons I don't use them any more. if they are not bedded correctly, or get too hot you fill find the friction material and the backing plate will part company. this is not good... bedding cures the adhesive they use to stick the pad material to the backing. their only real advante in my eyes is their price, there are much better fast road pads out there though, for not much more money.all just my opinion of course. :happy:

Good points and as you said everyone has there own opinion which is good. By the sounds of it you have tried a lot more pad's than me i have only tried these ones the stock ones and some ultimates. Interesting point about them coming away from the backing plate i guess i don't drive my car hard enough around the track (only been once though). I can't argue with those facts though. i will be sticking with them though as i do a track day maybe once or twice a year and for the odd bit of hard driving i do they don't fade like ultimates and stock pads :happy:

i agree with you that they will out "work" an ultimate, and definately a stock pad, but imo for track there are better pads, for 100% street there are better pads and for street/track/hills there are better pads too. hence i wont use them again. the whole pad parting company from the backing plate just put the final nail in the coffin in my book! at the time i thought they were the bees knees, but having tried lots of pads since I have found plenty that perform better for all usage patterns. I've also used ferrodo 2500s and 3000s but in the race car, not in my GTR and I liked both of those pads.

on the squealing thing, they shouldn't be noisy. try taking them out, check the shims are all still there (should be 2 each side of caliper) and put copper grease between backing and shim, shim and shim and shim and piston if you get my drift. so it's like a big sandwhich with grease in each layer. rough the pads up a bit (can even do it on a bit of concrete) then do the Race Brakes bedding process again too.

hey ^^^ if you wanna add a set of MR3's to that test background of yours let me know... I got a few guys running the BLITZ MR3's and doing very well but cant promote as they wear other brake brands on thier livery :(

MT stewart hill climb in qld also had 2 cars in the top 5 running MR3's the winner had a fire breathing VK and there aint no MR's for them :dry:

yeah I'm always keen to try something new. next round of the nsw series I'll be running the mu HC+ and the new ducting set-up on the GTR. as soon as that round is done I'm going to put a seal kit through the calipers (noticed 2 dust seals are cactus at last pad change). then maybe try one more set of pads before I switch to the 340mm rotors. I've been loathe to change calipers or rotors as I currently have 3 sets of front rotors and about 6 sets of pads on the go all in good shape so I just keep tweaking and testing the gear I've got.

and I know this is a bit ot, but i fitted the front lip extension/winglets. I have left the carnards off atm (don't want to put holes in the bar as I just filled them before the car was painted) but I hope these will add some high speed front end grip. I think they will. and they look good, so here is some pics. :(

i might have some brakes you may be keen to look at too... maybe do a independant shake down for us :dry:

billet 6-pot 355mm rotors etc far better than the current crop of chinese gear..... at the same price :kiss: i keep you updated. they are currentley being used on a few "top" jap workshop track cars.

yeah the enkeis are nice. GTR track rims always seem to be TE37, LMGT4 or CE28s these days so I wanted something different for track.

definately keen to look at brakes. it's the current focus for the car. handling is fairly sorted, power is equal to driver talent (lol) and using good tyres always of course so i just need more work on brakes.

sidd, glad you like the car. it's been a few years toiling away but it now goes as good as it looks and is 100% reliable. just money spent in the right places is all.

anyway, i've dragged us way of topic again. but I'll add some value to this post and say:

for 100% street with some spirited driving I'd use the ultimates or endless SSS

for 90% street and a few track days with short sessions I'd go the SSS or RB74s if you must (lol).

for any more than 4 track days a year I really think you need 'street pads' and 'track pads' and preferably 2 sets of rotors on the go (so you can alternate). In that case I'd go the SSS or VN9500 on street and on track use ferrodo 3000s or the pagids I liked their feel too.
