Weird Turbo-timer Problem

The other day I pulled up to the servo, and when I turned the car off the I could hear/feel a loud knocking noise in the engine bay. I opened the bonnet but by the time I could have a look the turbo timer had turned off.

I put some petrol in the car and drove down to the shops, when I turned off the car it did it again, this time I set the turbo timer higher and checked under the bonnet. The noise seems to be coming from the left hand side of the engine (opposite to turbo) and only happens during countown, when I turn the key back onto acc it goes away.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

I had no petrol (very empty) when I got to the servo and the noise sounds like a fan hitting something if that helps. It also made the noise once while I was driving from the petrol station to the shops at a higher rev, but didnt do it again after that.

matbe the fan is hitting the cooler pipe that goes under the battery on a 32.

That what it sounds like, but I don't know if thats it.

Its from the front-left of the engine and it only happened during the countdown.
