Last night I went to willowbank to watch the bracket racing. Good stuff with some incredibly tough street cars as well as full blown racers. Today I wandered out to qld raceway to watch the circuit action. Sone great racing with door handle to door handle action and some huge left nut overtaking maneuvres.

What really struck me about both of these meetings was the lack of participation by Skyliners and imports in general. At willow bank last night there was the sum total of none. Yep, big fat zero. So for all the talk about the horsepower that can be extracted from a line or the launch capability of the fabled GTR The night belonged to boganville.

Same at qld raceway today. Apart from one stove hot but as yet unsorted 33 gtst with a 25/30 power plant there was not one other line. I would have thought this was the ideal place for vehicles of this nature to gather and show their wares, I was obviously wrong.

So what is it with the liners. Is it just a penis extension type deal. We see plenty of bragging about dyno figures and mods etc etc but when the real call to arms goes out the liners are conspicuous by their abscence. They can be found down the coast backing up and shuffling at 5 kph to get a photo so they can see their dicks on the forum but when it comes to using these cars for what they are best at...Nothing, Not murmer, not a shot fired in anger.

What am I missing folks. Does owning a line automatically up your yellow blood count or was i expecting too much from my favorite marque and those who drive it.

Spotted posts and photos are cool and good for the ego. The horsepower thing is again ego, brag rights and I guess people know you as xxxxx with xxxxx car.

Each to their own

Just wait a while longer, with the price drop and workshops increasing in knowledge working on them, they will be all over motorsport, ATM they are still a fairly unknown quantity by the masses, and although its cheap horsepower. its still specialised to a few good tuners, which make all the difference between good and great. Bogans will always be the majority in the fords and holdens, this is Australia after all.

Ill make an observation here as well, Alot of us have jobs and other events to attend to before considering the drag strip every weekend, its always going to be like that unless we have endless cash to throw to r+d to beat this and that time before hand, most usually get there times then hunt around in observations and there own time r+d to improve on them, A time is similar to a dyno figure its only a figure which you can base and build on hence the reason why we dont dyno run every week to squeeze that extra 1 or 3 rwkws/awkws out of it.

The money factor is a big thing as well, this including travelling too and from these events, not only that most of us use our skylines as daily's we cannot afford the chance of increassing the likely hood our cars are off the road.

Yes it may seem like a shame, but you must take all aspects into account on this one noel sorry!

cheers

Sorry for what Adam, speaking your mind. No apology necessary for that bud. Leterip.

Most us drive our cars daily and cannot afford to race "door to door" in case of accident/breakage.

Nice that you went all the way out there though and choose not to have a go yourself, but instead come back and tell us that there were no lines out there :P

I am already headed in that direction mud. Whats your motivation...Small dick?

Last track day at hidden valley N.T. nissan's 200sx,180 sx, laurel, my 32GTR, R31 in attendance + Subaru gt forrester + others I cant remember or didnt race against.

have to admit what others have said about costs, daily drivers & most of all time is valid though, know a couple of others who would have happily been out there if it wasnt for work getting in the way of there fun. (hell I missed a motorkana thingo saturday coz of work )

And lets face it, it aint a cheap game either my new (by most peoples standards) tyres are only just legal after 2 track days and a motokana in pissing down rain and realisticly (?) will be needing replacement after drags next week.

So some of us race, most would given funds and oportunitys, some pose (there choice what to do with there cars) some have prioritys more show based, each to there own.

:P

Noel,

You just went on the wrong day mate. There have been numerous track and drag days organised by SAU if you weren't aware. Every enthusiast have their own groups or clubs who normally organise to attend together with the same type/make cars...u happened to be there on bogan day...If you do a search around, there are numerous Skylines that have broken numerous track and drag records in Australia alone.

On the flipside, "each to their own" is a very valid point. I would take a wild guess and say $$ is the main hindrance to most. People with mortgages, family and kids with a Skyline as a daily drivers for work can't exactly have their cars booked into workshops every 2nd day to fix stuff when something breaks.

There are many nowadays that in a attempt to own a piece of the legendary skyline can't even afford full comp insurance or even an alarm! :P

I enjoy driving mine as it is knowing that I might do the quarter mile in 14 secs instead of 13.8 :O

noel,

like a few others have said the imports tend to head down in their own little organized events, i.e. skidpans, track days, etc.

that said - there is a serious lack of QLD facilities and support in motorsport, one look at all the regulations and rules involved with places like mt. cotton, lakeside, darlington park, etc. there's no wonder why events like the upcoming skidpan is planned 2 months in advance at a facility 2 hours away.

here's another: go start an event :P build it and they will come, you'd be surprised at the turn out for a well planned outing :O

cheers

Yeah I gotta say door to door racing you kind of really need a dedicated car for that, but then I guess you should with drifting if you look at it that way, and not a whole lot of people worry about that too much.

Thats the other thing, thats really all you see at drift meets is imports, its kind of where the interest is for more people. Dont ask me why I cant explain the sport too well.

The other big one is cost, its not always all that cheap, at least not to be competitive, which is really the whole point of competition. Otherwise your just better off going out to a track day where all you are racing is the clock, or a t'n't which is the same deal, you are just racing the clock. Which is were you would see larger numbers.

That and sure as heck there are a few highway racers and show ponies amoung the skyline crowd, and imports in general.

"You are coming to a sad realisation, Cancel or Allow" :P

On topic: Heaps of lines attend regular track days and drag events, however as has been said, this is Australia (home to the bogan) and the majority of the cars are always going to be of the awesome v8 holden and ford variety.

But the main issue is, a lot of the people who buy skylines either have them as their day to day cars (and don't want to risk something happening to them) or have bought them so they can put a fulleh sik body kit on it and "pull da chicks with their loud subwoofers!!"

I'm sure you'd find a lot of the people on here have been to at least one TNT/Track day though!! Even still; nothing wrong with dyno queens and high hp cars that persue off track events ;)

    • Can you log IAT? Whilst WTA coolers have their place, doing any sort of sustained run is not one of them There are fixes that slow down the heat soak, like ice boxes, which don't last that long, and interchillers, which are fairly expensive, up grades to the WTA cooling radiator, which may require a bigger pump, and upgrades to the reservoir size,  and upgrades to the cooling fans, but, it all still heat soaks, and takes ages to come down in hot weather  For a turbo, that isn't locked into WTA like my PD blower is, can you not possibly swap to a nice air to air intercooler????, it would be better for sustained runs then, and have alot less things that could go wrong in my opinion
    • So, the other thing I've sorted is a baseline dyno run up at Unigroup's new location. The auto trans was a little unco-operative by both shifting down when the throttle was floored on the dyno (so Mark had to ramp it up more slowly than in a manual) and also by shifting up at 6,000 even in sports mode instead of the indicated redline of 7,000 Still, on a hot day it made 240rwkw at 16psi which seems about right for 300kw (400hp) through an auto at the wheels.  The shape of the curve is not quite right because it was not full throttle to about 4,500 to stop it kicking down, but until I can get a tune on the auto trans control this was the best we could do.....full boost will be well below 5,000 once that is sorted, I'll get some data logs when I can to confirm For comparison, the R32 made 255 at 12psi (at 4,500) on the same dyno with tune, n1 turbos, cam gears, big exhaust but otherwise all standard so the v37 is likely a little better out of the box. One thing that is very clear is that the standard water to air intercoolers are not up to sustained use at full throttle in warm ambient temps. After about 5 runs (so only a few minutes full throttle), it was pulling boost and timing and dropping 10-15% power. Unfortunately I didn't get that printout and the Unigroup guys are away at the moment, will try and get hold of it on their return. So, looks like a healthy engine to start modifying and the only real area of concern is the w2a heat exchangers which the aftermarket has plenty of solutions for
    • I maintain it actually looked really nice in person. So much so that I thought "No, this is illegal" but there it was, clear as day. I think we can easily call the wing and wheels/height to be transformative. Not saying it's better than the GR Whatever, or the 86, or the WRX STI or anything of that sort (the internet says it all bolts up so you can buy best of all worlds?) but it's still at least a thing and not nearly AS bad as people say.
    • That's less offensive than the previous gen.....except for all that ugly black tupperware around the edges. Blerck!
    • I leant out the window recently and took a picture of this new WRX. It looked real damn fine in person. It's faster around a track (stock) than a (stock) GR Yaris. It's much more practical despite being heavier. It's significantly cheaper. This gen tunes really well, much better than others. .... I think they're probably a lot better than people expect.
