According to that link, the apexi power intake was the best at filtering than the K&N. But in one of the latest Autosalon mags, the K&N was better at filtering than the Apexi Power Intake. I don't what to believe.

Does anyone else have a comment on the stainless mesh?

everyone talks about filtration vs. flow. From personal expreience steel mesch ones have decent flow but in my case shocking filtration.

Id rather more filtration than flow, a restriction of 3kw is better than a stone in a cylinder!

I have always used them and probaly always will, but my cars never see dirt roads, i have also checked comp blades for signs of dusting and even after 50-odd thousand kays never found anything un-toward. Mind you these cars did see quite a few sand traps over the years too :unsure: so if it was going to be a problem i would have experienced it.

Wheezy, how could you tell it was bad at filtering? When it was cleaned?

URAS what brand would you recommend for a steel mesh filter? Also since they're a reusable filter, is cleaning them a matter of just rinsing them out?

There will always be those filtration tests. all that I can say is read that test, take it as you will then make up your decisoion.

The K+N was the one the third guy reccomended. I have always been a big fan of the K+N filters. and If I was going to change it would probably be back to one of those. I've used them before. I've also used the HKS musroom shape ones and they are cheap pieces of cr4p. have a look at any level of motorsport and see how many guys are running K+N filters. It's a lot. especially in the budget teams filtration is just as important as flow and the K+N seems to offer the best compromise.

I agree with you mate.

The thing is, a lot of people are happy to run no filter. The way I see it, is i'd prefer not to, in case if large chunks of things, or bits of leaf get sucked in etc. The good thing about the stainless ones, is they would flow basically as much as no filter (minus a tiny bit) and still filter out decent amoutns of stuff. The mesh is very very fine. It would filter big chunks of dust, probably sand, etc etc. Just not the real fine stuff.

I reckon most of us change oil fairly regularly, so i'm not too concerned with filtration. Yes, I know small dust can do damage over time, but hey, how many of us want our engines to last 500 000ks.

kn filters do filter a lot better. So do the apexi ones. But the stainless ones definitely flow more. the question with intake always is AT WHAT FLOW RATE DOES YOUR CURRENT INTAKE BECOME A RESTRICTION. If the kn is not a restriction, even thought he stainless has the capacity to flow more, it won't make anymore power. That's why at low power levels, peopel dont' notice any increase in power with filter upgrades.

It definitely makes it more responsive though (if you hvae a cold air intake too).

When I found chunks of dirt and small rocks in my intake pipe (from AFM to turbo). Although, it came with the car and Im guessing was a no name POS.

Interesting, could depend on what we drive through too and how fine the mesh is I suppose.

i would stay stick with the K+N panel they are good. or if you want some more induction noise (which is fair enough) then I'd give the K+N pod a go. they are cleanable too, and from memory have a warranty of some kind.

I run a stainless mesh filter, with a K&N Filtercharger sock. Looks pretty much like a shower cap. Flow performance is great, though in dusty conditions (grass/dirt motorkhana) the fine dust has shown signs of passing through the filter.

Slightly off track, but has anyone using a K&N ever reported an AFM failure due to contamination of the hot wire by the K&N oil?

i don't use one but having read this i don't think i ever will

I'm happy with my Blitz, love the noise and glad to hear they are one of the best flowing filters.

But if those tests have been done legitimately, the Apexi is far superior - same price, highest performance gain, and best filtering. Doesnt seem right, high performance = high flow, but i thought better filtration would be a trade-off against flow rate. ie, cant have best performance and best filtration at the same time?!

As you saw, all the dash is there in that car..and thinking about it, it'd be easier to pull the whole center section out, rather than just the ashtray and rails, but your call...
    • The "sacrifice of low end" is now basically irrelevant in 2025. Turbo/ecu/fabrication/and other tech advancements gives a vast array of options to mitigated any of it. My setup now is a fantastic example of this. 300whp / 20psi @ 3500rpm from a 600hp turbo setup on a notoriety low reading Dyno Dynamics roller dyno, is almost unmatched on all of SAU and other forums. The only other turbo i've seen that can achieve this is a BW EFR + twin scroll / twin gates etc etc etc... ps. tuned by Matty Spry at P.I.T.S as far as getting to the 600 figure, while enlarging your itb's alone probably won't get you there, as Sucram has stated above, it will certainly help. Just do it Predator1 my brother hahaha 🙂
    • I use Taaarks/efi solutions ones. Years, and no issues.
    • At the Botany heavy vehicle inspection centre. At the time there were only 2 locations that did IM240 testing for free, the other location was at Penrith. I did a quick google, seems like the Botany and Penrith inspection centre is closed now though About an hour of my time.  At the time you could. They are closed now   No it was Government run, the site was attached to the RTA from memory. The guys running it at the time were awesome, if you didn't pass the test, they handed you the results and said make changes to your car/tune and have another go later. You drove in registered, failed, and drove out registered.   Obviously though if you were defected, sent there, failed. You remained unregistered.  From my 5 minutes of research (have a look at the date on my test results) looks like things have changed. So, I can't see any way to get this test done for free now Seems like you'll need to call around the engineering places doing the Vehicle Safety Compliance Certification Scheme or call around workshops with a dyno and try and get a RG240 test. No idea how expensive that is though or how easy it is to find a place offering it.  Bit depressing learning about this now. The first car I had engineered in NSW cost me about $250 all up.... So kids these days can't buy houses, looks like getting your car legal and engineered in NSW is another thing on the list of things they can't afford. Great.
