I think for me it comes down to getting a stainless mesh pod or a K&N pod.

The thought of the stainless mesh pod flowing heaps better is cool , but the thought of driving through it through a large dust cloud that a lawn mower or tractor or truck is kicking up and getting all that fine dust going straight through the filter isn't very nice.

I think I'll go for the K&N. Best protection and flows decent enough. the flow difference probably doesn't matter as much anyway on a car thats not putting out big power.

I run a stainless mesh filter, with a K&N Filtercharger sock. Looks pretty much like a shower cap. Flow performance is great, though in dusty conditions (grass/dirt motorkhana) the fine dust has shown signs of passing through the filter.

Slightly off track, but has anyone using a K&N ever reported an AFM failure due to contamination of the hot wire by the K&N oil?

A few of the guys on ns.com think its a sin to run oiled filters because it "stuffs up the AFM".

In my experience, I've had a oiled filter for about a year now and quite honestly no oil had contaminated of the afm or performance drop. No oil has even left the filter for that fact and coated the intake. The only time oil came though the filter is when I re-oiled it probably a tad too much. Just got some electrical contact cleaner and sprayed down the afm after I ran the filter for a few drives.

yeah, I never had a problem with an oiled filter and i ran one on one of my cars for nearly 3 years. and probably cleaned and oil it 3 or 4 times. buy the K+N maintenance kit. it comes with cleaner, and the spray on filter oil. the filter oil is red so you can see where you've sprayed and helps to make sure you don't over oil. i mean, you don't douse it in the stuff, it's just a light coating to aid in filtration.

K&N offer a lifetime warranty (ie 1million kms), I use them and have for years.

I use twin pods on my rebuilt CBR919RR engine, wouldnt use anything but K&N on that highly stressed engine with race flatslide carbies.

I use a single pod on my 190rwkw Rb25det, oil it every 6 months. When washing / cleaning / re-oiling the K&N filter, take off the afm and spray it with brake contact cleaner, to get rid of the last 6months oily residue.......
