its a CA18det, the coolant disappears quick, idles rough, timings out and bubbles in the radiator. Are these the symtoms of head gasket or are there anything else that i could test to see if the gasket is gone.

thanks guys

Now if the coolant is dissapearing quick, check for leaks.. Run the car go for a cruise come home sit around and watch..

Now i dont know ca18's but have you change the radiator and does it have a Pressurised cap.. Alot of people notice there coolant bubbling around when they shut the car off due to the pressure from the radiator pressing down.. and also the coolant bottle having a pressured cap pressing down also..

Symptoms of a headgasket are milky coolant.

that sounds like classic head gasked or even cracked head 4 sure.... you can pressure test it and then leave sit with pressure over night or couple of hours then crack and see if its hard to start or even hydrolic locks..

even a TK tester would do it but i would say head 4 sure!

ca18 are prone to blowing headgaskets

check the lh side of the block (where the power steering pump is) check for coolant leaking down the block

but usually the blow between cylinder and water jacket so u will rarely see coolant mixed in with the oil on a ca18

btw u will get a better responce if u go to www.nissansilvia.com as there are alot of ca18 freaks on this site

the whole engine is flooded with leaks, i can't believe the last owner. since owning the car i realised the car has had a hard and neglected life :P but thanks for the advice boot_it

Welcome to the world of CA's, does there appear to be a frothy substance in the radiator only when its on? more than likely the head gasket is gone, CA's are bordering on 20 years old. The poor 4 cylinder is on its lasts legs.

Most 180's or jap cars for that matter have had a hard life, its just a matter of getting one that wasnt treated as bad as others.

Cheers, Semo
