My car did the same thing at the start of the year, tore the housing apart and made a huge mess. Damn it was noisy, about 5-6000rpm under acceleration and crunch as it let go and ricocheted around the engine bay! Fan, clutch, rad, shroud, w/pump pulley all trashed; radiator just touched the condensor but didnt break it.

When i pulley what was left on the fan out of the engine bay, i realised i could turn the nuts that held the fan to the w/p by hand! So my theory is when my car was worked on 20-30kms prior, the nuts were left loose; there would be quite an imbalance at 6-7K rpm and the casing fatigues and breaks under the stress.

So i feel for you mate, i know what it like :D I nearly fell over when i quoted th parts at Nissan ($1600 plus) but sourced some used and diffent parts and got away with spending about $550
