well there is a fair sized race meet at wakefield park (goulburn nsw) this weekend

it's an avesco round, as well as the historics being there too

and when there is the historics, there is the almighty Gibson Motorsport HR31 Skylines to contend with. Unfortunately Terry Ashwood could not make it to this round, but Rod Markland is there, with his son Craig driving.

And low and behold, today he had a great bash out on the track, getting pole position and even breaking the lap record!!!

There are 2 races tomorrow. First is @ 9:30am.

So get out there and cheer on the Gibbo 31s - these cars are absolutely brilliant in the flesh! The sound down the straight is phenomenal. 2007 is shaping up to be a good year for the historics - with a Victorian Gibson enthusiast to be introducing his freshly restored Gibson HR31 to race alongside Terry and Rod's!

I'll be out there tomorrow helping Chris Easton, who is doing a few drift demonstrations. Come out and say g'day. my # is 0402 287 773.

cheers, MARK

gawddaammmmmmit why do I have to be at work tomorrow?

sounds like it will be an awesome day!

Also with the historics - Great fun to watch!!!

ps get more photos :)

obviosuly the above photos are from eastern creek

but yeah tomorrow for sure i'll get some photos

if we were really luck, craig driving the gibson car might just get inspired by chris' drift demos!!

outstanding race meet!!!

the drifting was SHIThouse

BUT

*************

Craig Markland did very well in today's first race, dropping to 2nd spot from the start of the grid, but on the last lap regaining 1st position at the start of turn 2, but then locking up (couldn't shed the speed) and went off the track

he finished 5th by a bee's dick

2nd race today - started in fifth

quiockly made his way to 3rd

then 2nd

then on the last lap, overtook frank bindings xd "army reserve falcon" at the last corner coming on to straight, to get 1st and a win

and sure enough, for the 2nd day in a row, he rewrote the GROUP A WAKEFIELD LAP RECORD

awesome race considering it's his 2nd time driving the gibson coupe

well done craig!

its got the go over the might xd. that things tough.

the 31 seems to be doing the rounds hey. it seems very well sorted now. they should breakout the gtr more often. and whats the rules with restrictors and boost restrictions?

gday mate

f**k you guys get CANED by eachother on the track

best part of the v8 ute racing!!!!

i have been following the gibbo 31 for a few years now.

31GUN on this forum is a crewie for the gibson r31 cars, so he has the low down on them all

but it is not unusual for them to win the races at the historic meets. things were getting good towards the end of last year when peter brock started racing in the same category (group a/c historics [correct me if that's wrong]) in the old torana. he pushed terry ashwood and rod markland quite hard but fortunately they beat him!

for those interested, here are the details for the 5 Gibson 31s

Chassis #1- Rod Marklands car.

Chassis #2- Written off at A.I.R. Skaife driving, punted by Win Percy.

Chassis #3- Owned by John Smallman in Vic. Ready to go.

Chassis #4- Sizzler car.

Chassis #5- Terry Ashwoods car.

at the upcoming june round @ oran park, both Rod and Terry will be racing their 31s. but ALSO, the Sizzler 31 (seen below) will be racing. it has been in storage in nz for 15 years, so there will now be 3 gibson r31s racing. and to top it off, the #3 has been finished off in victoria. so all going well, the historics will now see 4 gibson r31s on the track at any given time

SizzSky1.jpg

i will post up details of this round

these cars are fantastic in the flesh! come out and support them

as for the gtr, it's expensive to run for terry who owns it. and he loves driving the 31

however, a victorian has purchased the GIO gtr, and is getting it up to standard to enter in this category as well. word is once entered, terry may be convinced to get out his winfield gtr for a spin..

some great things to come in the historics in 2007!

ps - thanks hooksy for the chassis info and dave for the pic

    • To be fair passengers who aren't silly and have been in proper fast cars have often been pretty impressed once you hit 4th gear
    • I suppose that's true. Barring almost any situation, I'll never sell so what the market does is kind of irrelevant to me. It's possible I'd make most of my money back. That spreadsheet I mentioned? Maybe I could make back more than what the car's total costs thus far are, but the parts and all that is possibly a different story... Thanks for reading. It was certainly a good moment and just makes the ties to the car that much stronger. It's exciting that the option will be there to bring it over, however I have some plans with a shop that may end up keeping the car there longer, not sure. Coupled with the fact I want to move there and haven't solidified any path yet. So in a way, it feels like I'm in a limbo state that is uncertain; time will tell.
    • No worries, everything worked out in the end. I just wanted to make the point that it doesn't matter where it comes from (I.E Australia), it can be broken or improperly built. I would still purchase from these companies in the future. B2R - Not certain how that finished, this was on a car I wired a few things and street tuned. I know the owner ended up shipping the motor back to Australia for investigation. Hopefully some of it is covered under warranty.  Turbosmart - I always pressure test everything that goes on my car. It's a habit from my career in oil and gas. I run two 40mm's and both had major leaks from the actuator to exhaust portion through the shaft. I returned both, they shipped me back two and one was leaking and the other had a 38mm top (40mm gate with 38mm actuator cap, no idea how that happens). Eventually after a lot of back and forth I found myself with two non-leaking gates. I believe this happens a lot more then people would like to believe but you would never know if you don't pressure test them prior to installation. Crank Motorsport - Issued a full refund and let me keep the seat rails. I turned them into scrap metal for other projects. GKTech - Shipped me out a replacement and asked that I modify it as per my idea and that they would do the same for a future revision. ATP - Can just needed a large shim to bolt up properly.  Haltech - They started an actual proper Beta channel for firmware's a few months back and stopped using the general public for testing. I'm now much happier.  Speedtek - f**k Speedtek. I would love to watch them burn.
    • I've got a Turbosmart wastegate, ATP catch can, many GK Tech parts and Haltech everything. Everything's been perfect, sorry to hear your experience wasn't the same
