I dont think they are...i hardly use mine even though its installed

Someone reputable here once said its not necessary because of something or another, i forgot sorry.

If anything, you can always turbo time ur car yourself

However, the only time i can see where it is necessary is when u really need to get out of the car in a hurry and cannot wait around for the car.

best benefit i get out of having a turbo timer is when i turn my car of and start to walk away and some one says "hey your car is still running"

and then you say "nuh its ok it turns its self off" makes me feel special when i say it :P

that someone reputable was sydneykid

n the basic gist of it was that theyre worthless coz

1. the car sitting still wont cool the oil, moving air cools it. so driving around the block before u turn the car off is more effective

2. they make the car easier to steal

haha 2nd that

It says something about leaving the car to cool down if car has been driven under load or above 100km/h in the car manual, thats the only reason i got one. Tried without but after a few weeks of sitting there waiting for a minute or 2 it gets a bit annoying.

Another thing is i heard turbo timers void your factory warranty, is that true.

'third' that sam. get that 60% of the time at uni and work

Think about it...Nissan have put so much money into R&D into their vehicles...did any of them come with a turbo timer from factory?

That's why Nissan state in the manual to idle car if car has been under load (turbo squirts) for a minute or so. But if you don't do this, well you can just fork out for new NISSAN bits, which they are more than happy to supply you with. :P

Think about it, turbo timers must have a legit purpose. Otherwise there wouldn't be so many reputable brands manufacturing them, and people buying them the world over.

dat is indeed true hahaha had a guy follow me into woodvale shops kept sayin ma car was still runnin left ma jkeys inside ns tuff said it was alright n he goes i'm not liein go have a look ahha had to explain to the guy:P

I have one of the Apexi turbo timers and it displays battery voltage as well as a few other things which I've found useful. You can also turn off the unit which will switch off the car (if the keys aren't in the ignition) without having to wait for the timer to count down if you can't be bothered waiting.

They were first made to prevent older oils from burning up in the oil lines in journal bearing turbos. You don't have to worry about this these days as the semi and full synthetic oils are more resistant to losing their lubricating properties in extreme temperatures.

It's still a good habit to let your car idle for 30 seconds anyway.

With water cooled turbos the turbo never reached the coaking level that does the damage, so I would imagine the are a bit more nessesary after a turbo upgrade when things get hotter!

I have mentioned this elsewhere, but here goes again....

Standard turbos have a pressure fed plain bush bearing. When you stop driving the turbo can take a while to slow down and if you pull into the driveway and cut the ignition, the turbo will continue to spin for a short time, albeit without any oil pressure. If you have been sensible and driven nicely for the last few minutes, and you have a good quality oil in the car, no biggie, the oil present in the turbo will protect the bearing until it stops spinning.

If the oil is old / crappy grade and/or you have been fanging it home (or anywhere) and you shut off straight away either the oil in the bearing will drain away leaving the bearing to cop a hiding as long as the turbine is spinning, or the oil will stay in the bearing and get cooked, stuffing the engine oil AND your turbo!

I gotta say, I am getting pretty sick of hearing about how turbo timers let the turbo "cool down". Nothing will cool down by letting your car continue to idle.

They will, however, extend the life of your turbo when used properly. I just stay right off boost for the last 3-5 minutes of every drive and use a 30 sec timer on the TT. This makes it a lot easier when getting fuel etc as you don't end up standing around waiting for the car to shut off before you can refuel.

its not meant to cool the oil. its so the oil can keep flowing into the turbo to cool it and preserve the it, hence why cop cordias and vls used to blow there motors cuz they chase ppl, switch them off and 'POP'

i reckon there worth it saves hanging around.

im a trimmer and we deal with a few ssangyong turbo diesels which have the merc engine and they have a sticker on the driver door saying to cool the engine at idle before switching off, if the manufacturer reckons so id say there a good thing to have. they wouldnt make turbo timers for the hell of it, also my girls old car the mighty nissan langley had a timer standard which you couldnt 'switch' off

    • This is a story of my life things, I learned eventually (thanks to someone calling me out) that my enthusiasm for discussing and sharing ideas that it came across as arrogance and I'm like... WTF?!    One thing I'm pretty sure I justifiably pride myself on is knowing that everyone will have things they can teach you, and you're always going to find out that something you think you know turns out wrong - you just don't know what it is until you get there.   Just the bursting enthusiasm that comes with ADHD when you hit something that gives you dopamine dumps can come across like you think everyone else is wrong or don't matter. But yeah, I'm a software engineer by trade and also do tuning in weekends and 100% have long had a reputation for  quickly making connections when resolving problems or forming solutions that I've sometimes had to take people form a long walk from start to end to explain how I ended up where I did when it's seemed "too simple" when I've stated my initial case, and had the "WTF" type reaction when they've realised how much was actually considered haha.   My reward is that I get all the curly problems thrown at me.
    • Wives never seem to find things funny. Especially when they're trying to sleep, and you've found the new funniest thing ever. I've never seen someone be able to get try and be cranky with me, while they're holding back fits of laughter... 😛   Also, I tell mine it's payback anyway. She has BiPolar. So the household can get quite emotionally wild at times 😛
    • I'm not up to date on the latest, but for basic modifications like pod filter, lower springs etc you can get a modification permit at the time of inspection.  For more serious modifications you will need engineering.  Intercoolers used to fall into the mod permit rule but its been a long while since i looked it up.   Either way you will be able to get it registered, just a case of $300 vs $3k .
    • Hi everyone! I’m the new owner of a 1996 R33 GTS-T, I’ve purchased this car over from Queensland and brought it to Western Australia and I’ve found that there is a hole cut out in the engine bay for the FMIC that enters into the wheel well (fender liners are in the boot). For anyone that has had to get their car over the PITS here, will this be a major issue?
    • Yeah I've spotted this one too, whenever it's lotto superdraw week and I'm browsing car sales dot com for my new ride They must be dreaming, maybe it's worth 150k for the link to Brock?
