Hi i've been searching on here for the past 2 hrs about a dilema with my water pump, i've found where its leaking from (being that little hole, SK said that its the seal on the front of the pump thats screwed causing it to leak out from the little hole in previous threads) BUT i'm having trouble finding out what i should replace at the same time as my water pump.

Some people are saying "go for the VL pump" others are saying RB26dett and some are saying genuine nissan rb25det... My main problem is, what pump to get because it seems everyone has personal preferences and different things work for different people aswell... like i've seen alot of people say vl pump is fine but one hole doesn't line up, after a while it can start leaking again... to me that doesn't mean its fine lol

What timing belt to get? wether it be genuine or aftermarket....

Wether it is necessary to replace the Tensioner and Idler Pully bearings if theres no apparent problem with them (found the part numbers for em whilst searching)

I'm trying to figure everything out before i go for my 100k service cos its coming up shortly and now this leak has made it come a lot more sooner (sonofabitch)

I'd like to try and get everything done in one hit, and if anyone can elaborate on this it would be GREATLY apreciated, i know people on SAU have been through soo much shit with their cars and are all lovely people and would be able to help another forum member out :)

Thanks all in advance and btw is it an idea to just drive it for the time being and top it up or should i just stop driving it all together until its fixed?

EDIT: Also if someone can throw in part numbers of things i need that would help HEAPS! :)

GEORGE

asking for preferences on car parts is the same as asking whether one hard disk manufacturer is better than another (maxtor, seagate, western digital etc). Speak to enough people and you'll find several who have had big problems with each item.

since your existing water pump, timing belt, tensioner etc have all lasted 100,000km i would be tempted to put standard parts straight back on unless your motor is significantly modified. common advice seems to be to do water pump, tensioner and idler when you do the timing belt because it's a pain in the bum to pull it all apart again if you have to do them later on.

so yeah, just do ONE service and fix the lot. depends how quickly it's leaking, as to whether you do it all now or you can get by for a month with regular top-ups. if it's a significant leak then do it soon because you don't want to forget you're losing coolant and overheat your engine

My advice is to go genuine for waterpump and timing belt, no risk of incompatability then, and non-genuine (japanese made) tensioner and idler bearings(a lot cheaper than nissan, and no worry about quality) (not expensive and peace of mind to change them while you are there). cheers

it all depends on your application. if you've got big power or planing for big power then get the N1 water pump and aftermarket timing belt. as for me im after moderate power so i just stuck with standard waterpump and timing belt.

i decided to go genuine idler and tensioner bearings which was a mistake as they are definitly nsk bearings which you can get for half the price if not cheaper. was a good thing i changed them as one of the old bearings looked abit rough after inspection.

got my cam seals and oil seal changed too aswell as my rocker gaskets, exhaust manifold bolts gaskets and turbo gaskets which all needed fixing. turned out to be an expensive service...ha. then found out that my clutch was on its way out...ha. all in one hit hey.

Just did my cambelt, tensioner and idler pulleys @ 88,000 K (Old belt noisey). Went the same way as chook recommended was all good. Std belt has timing marks on it and it runs nice and quiet.

Hey thanks everyone for all your help and reply's it clears a lot of stuff up for me!

As for plans in the future for my car, i'm not going to big power just mild really, if anything i'm more or less aiming at between 220-240 rwkw so i suppose the standard bits n pieces are going to be fine, i've read the N1 water pumps are good for high rpm driving which i dont really do cos its a daily driver not track or anything like that.

Chook - Thanks heaps for those part numbers they'll come in handy for sure! :)

(B1) MR_Fanny - The cam seals and oil seals... are they necessary to replace? My rocker cover gasket doesn't seem to be seeping much, looks all ok i think..

GTR32GUS - Thanks for that link dude! I'm just not sure if i'm up to doing it myself... i know bits and peices of a motor but i dont think i have all the tools needed for the job...

As for the waterpump, i've noticed a forum business trader is selling them for around $170 + postage, is that a reasonable price or would trade price from nissan be more cheaper?

Again thanks everyone for your help... its starting to clear a lot of stuff up for me :)

Oh and my waterpump is leaking when i turn the car on... i can keep topping it up but it seems to be making some funny noise now, dun want it to shit itself driving somewhere get a freaking tow truck lol

cam seals (1304216V00) are $11.97 each trade +gst and crankshaft seal (1351010Y10) is $19.30 +gst trade. not much really so why not do it while everythings appart. waterpump trade is $117.13 +gst.

i just walked into nissan, had a good chat with the parts guy, turns out he's into skylines. kindly asked for trade price and he hooked me up with everything. top bloke. still damn expensive though...ha.

as for rocker gasket....replace if needed.

very true... i apreciate the help mate and i'll be taking everyones advice with this and go genuine!

cheers all

timing belt (130285L327) was $65.94 + gst trade.

as for going genuine for everything, if i had to do it again id go and get the idler and tensioner bearings from a bearing shop at half the price if not more. genuine bearings turned out to be nsk anyways.

the part numbers for the timing belt, is it

130285L327

or

1302820P25 (The one chook posted up)

just wana ask for the right thing when i go to nissan lol

if you PM me your VIN # i can get the exact part # that your car came with from the Nissan FAST software. The other timing belt # you listed was for RB25DET after April 1998, for Neo engines. Although they are probably interchangable.

i used the fast software thats around to get the part numbers. the guy at nissan said the part numbers in australia are different so he had to re find them for me and those numbers are what i got on the invoice.

would be good to clear up... maybe ive got the wrong one..ha. fingers crossed.

Thanks again guys i've spoken to my mechanic and asked him to order my parts from nissan for me so i can get trade price lol

Hopefully they double check em and get the right ones but it should be fine...thanks again everyone
